  • With a new baby in the house, the need for quiet is paramount. How can he connect a headphone amp and his power amp and control both with different levels?

    The Schiit Magni has RCA outputs. He can run those to the Stellar. Good thing is - when the headphones are plugged in, the RCA output stops so even if the power amp is on - no sound comes out of speakers. I have mine rigged this way - from iFi Zen Dac to Magni 3+ to Denon PMA520AE. So no Y connectors.

  • @petermartin9494
    @petermartin9494 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    No, no, no. Why in the world would he connect his headphone amplifier to his preamp at all? To hear whatever distortion the preamp has to contribute? If he is going to be using a Y connector, then that should be at his source which should then be connected to the headphone amp and preamp. The headphone amp has no reason to have anything to do with his preamp. If it is more convenient for him he could also connect his source to a high quality switch box and he can switch between his source feeding his preamp or his headphone amp. I am surprised that you did not suggest this.

    I had the same problem when I upgraded to a
    used Krell Soundstage preamp.
    The Krell preamp has no headphone jack. It does have volume control.
    I also bought the Schitt headphone amp directly from Schitt.
    I tried using the tape out or monitor, but I got no sound.
    The Krell guy said to use Y adapters on the L/R out, which works fine to my ears.
    I leave my Schitt volume about halfway up & control the headphone volume with the Krell.

    If he is using a single source most of the time he can use the y adapters at the source and feed the pre amp and headphone amp independently. it would help to know the actual components in the system outside of the power amp to keep the mystery factor out of this.

    The best option is to connect the headphone amp directly to the source if it is a dac most should have both balanced and single ended outputs.

    • @klewja
      @klewja 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @behexen250 not really with my Bartok I run single ended to my formula s headphone amp and balanced to my hegel for the speakers. Alot of totl headphone amps are actually single ended and only provided balanced as an alternative input. The amplification stage is actually single ended.

    • @klewja
      @klewja 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @behexen250 the yggdrasil has bothered balanced and single ended output so do the topping d90, remember adi-2 mytek brooklyn ect. They are all capable of running both the balanced and single ended outputs at the same time. If the dac has a true balanced out then there are 2 different output sections. The truth of the matter is that balanced really doesn't matter that much unless you are running long cable runs and need the noise rejection.
      There are plenty of reasonably priced dacs that have both outputs. Or he can just run the headphone amp out of the preamp and shut off the power amps when not listening t ok the speakers.

    • @wishusknight3009
      @wishusknight3009 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Balanced line drive is seriously not going to make any difference in any home application unless you are experiencing interference from another source, in which case you probably have worse problems.

    • @wishusknight3009
      @wishusknight3009 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @behexen250 Most any decent pro gear is balanced through and through. At least crossovers and DSP's are. effects units and such usually are unless they are inserted. Somewhere in a strip.
      I have AMT 1A for midhigh and JBL d130's for woofers. So it is fair to say they are up there in the revealing speaker category. And I did convert my setup to balanced, but didn't notice any difference worth the expense. As it should be when you know the implementation of the gear is as good as can be.
      If you are noticing any difference then it is probably more dilation than actual improvement. But it is probably not an effect which is undesirable to the ears. Or it is compensating for lackluster designs which a lot of high end home gear seems to suffer from due to being more marketing than anything top notch.

    Many headphone amps, and all of the amps by Schiit, have pass through RCA connections (although on the Mjolnir they are pre-outs). Not sure what precipitated this being so common but it's handy for headphone hobbyists because you can daisy chain a bunch of different amps in front of your speaker pre-amp. Seems to be a common industry practice with headphone amps and all seem to be simple bypass circuits that work regardless of whether the headphone amp is powered so there's minimal degradation to the source. I have some pretty revealing Focal headphones and maybe others might hear a difference but I haven't with my speaker amp at the end of a chain of one Schiit Loki EQ and 3 headphone amps.

  • @rbsorg

    I agree with Paul for the line out. That in concert with your external amp would be most cost effective. If you wanted to 2 bird with one stone get a all in one day and headphone amp like a topping dx7. Check massdrop to save some $$$ but they are not Amazon nice with returns. Few items at play. Ask yourself if you want to use your headphones single ended or 4 pin on you hp amp/dac. Check hart audio for their modular cables. Here you could have a nice dac and not mess with the signal chain on the stereo. On the dac ask yourself if you want rca or xlr outputs. Here one could go to the hp amp and the other to the stereo. Do you want the dac to output fixed or variable. Lastly if you want to run planar don't go tube. Consider a tube hybrid, class ab, or my favorite class a. I have an Aune x7s (200 usd) from mass drop and love it.

But then, why not choose a better modern device? For example, some Android smart phones have been doing their sample rate conversion using a low-end more "CPU friendly" algorithm (e.g. to get best AnTuTu scores) causing audio fidelity artifacts when converting CD PCM 44kHz to Android's audio clock of 48kHz.

      Firstly, try the headphones with a different (friends?) amplifier. If the same fault occurs you know it's the 'phones not your amplifier. If it is the amplifier try cleaning the socket with switch cleaner but the socket may need renewal. If (most likely) the problem is with the headphones try cleaning the jack plug with switch cleaner (or at a pinch WD40) to see if that improves things. My best guess, however, is the wires to the jack plug will have come adrift at the soldered connections inside. You may be able to unscrew the barrel of the jack plug to physically inspect them; using a magnifying glass make sure the wires don't come away from the solder posts when you wiggle them. Assuming you find a loose wire great; it should be a very straightforward job for any competent electrical repair guy to either remake the existing joints or solder on a whole new plug. A third possibility, but less likely, is an internal break in the cable wire but, again, a decent repairman should be able to trace and fix it quite cost-effectively. Hope this helps and let me know how you get on! ;0)

    • @gmak8052
      @gmak8052 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The amount of resistance is so small its immaterial. What is worth mentioning is the output voltage will be shared between the two of them. I don't think it matters though because that would only be a factor when both are being used and lets face it the audible difference will be very very small with just getting split 2 ways and at that point the biggest victim of sound quality reduction is the wife listening to the system as he will be on headphones anyway.I'm sure they aren't super high end headphones that would matter more the amp in question is Schitt not a multi thousand dollar setup.

      You all ever try slapping some resistors over the speaker output?
      Guitar amps since the 70's have used that trick to make a (higher -Z) headphone output from a transistor speaker level output, saves a few manufacturer bucks when the 1/4 headphone jack cost a couple. The resistors should lower the current traveling to the jack and following the current drop, a voltage drop. Do your research, dont electrocute yourselves
