What is the difference between cross stitch and hand embroidery?

All of these are wonderful, and exhibit skills earned by many hours of dedication and practice. I think the last one is the one I have been hoping to find. My goal is embroider it on a 3/8" wide satin ribbon, using silk thread, to be used as an inlay in a ring made of epoxy resin. I will find out if my limited abilities can meet my aspirations. At least it's a small ring and I only need about 2" of the ribbon to be embroidered.
I did some embroidery many years ago when one's favorite bell bottom jeans had to be embellished with whatever motif one was capable of doing while in an altered state. (Yes, I am that old.) A few years ago, my attempts to learn to knit showed me just how badly I can be defeated by two sticks and a string. My unfinished projects, along with my ego, lie stashed in a box somewhere, gathering dust and awaiting resurrection just as soon as I get over the trauma of having knitted and purled several locks of my hair into a leg warmer. Yarn will readily unravel. Hair does not.
