Many of you have told me how anxious you feel about doing subcutaneous injections for your goats yearly vaccinations or other things. Well come along to the barn with me and let me show you how easy it can be! No need to fear the needle!
Such a cooperative patient :) And great point about using a fresh needle! I was taught to pull back a little once the needle is in. If no blood enters the syringe, then you've confirmed the needle didn't hit a vein and you're good to inject the meds.
I have years of practice and well-trained goats. I also do this for other homesteads and farms local to me as well as hoof trimming and disbudding and other work like that! Many of my first injections were botched and even now a few times a year i have to do a 2nd stick because of one reason or another. You will get there just STICK with it! 😉
I’ve got my first injection day today. I’ve got a neighbor coming out to help me band and vaccinate a couple bucklings, and I’ll do the adults myself. Might run out to grab a fistful of spare needles for the future, but we’ll all survive with one syringe per animal per dose today.
Really enjoying these videos! I have one quick question based on observation. I like the idea of switching needles, but shouldn't you flick and squeeze out the air *after* switching back needles? Otherwise you'll always be injecting whatever air is in the needle?
Only if you see an air bubble in the syringe. A teeny amount of air in the needle tip won't harm anything especially since this is SubQ not IV. Glad you are enjoying the videos! 🥰
I get my supplies mostly from a store called North 40 its my closest farm/feed store. Most any Farm Supply or Feed store should have these supplies. Great question!
I have to give my goat calcium injections. It’s hard because she’s so underweight that it’s almost impossible to find skin to pull up to make the tent.
Surprises me all the time as being a farm boy how many people don't know how to give shots or other medical treatments to there critters Ma'am. I reckon that is what happens when city slickers move to the country and think they are farmers Ma'am.
As a former city slicker I would say that the best thing for us greenhorns is to have the old-timers be open and willing to teach. These are dying trades because of a really bad closed system where new people are not often welcomed and are often judged for what they don't yet know. Not many people have my level of tenacity to go figure things out on their own
As a devout Christian myself. Please. For the love of God. Hush, lol. Why would what we needed or not in Eden have anything at all to do with what we do or do not need in the broken world?

Not a worldly injection giver
They didn't need it in God's garden And don't need it Now
