I'm Swedish, and I learnt a lot from this video. They didn't tell us about the devil bit in school, and I was always confused about what Lucia (this Italian girl who pulled her eyes out and served them to her suitor on a silver plate) had to do with light. I love Natten går tunga fjät! I'd like to add that while the first verse talks about how shadows lurk on Earth, the final verse, sung as the procession exits, says that Lucia promises that the sun will rise out of a rosy sky. And here's the thing, usually the Lucia procession in school happens in the morning. When you enter the auditorium, it's dark outside, but when you leave, the sun has just risen. So right after you hear that promise of the sun, you go out and see it. I love that effect. It truly makes Lucia feel magical. Nowadays, though, I never hear Natten går tunga fjät. Most Lucia processions choose to sing "Sankta Lucia, ljusklara hägring" instead, which has the same melody, but different lyrics.
Åh, så fint att höra att även du som svensk lärde dig nya saker ❤ Det gjorde vi också när vi samlade information på ämnet inför den här videon. Tack för att du delar med dig av varför Lucia och firandet är så magiskt!
I arrived in Sweden this summer so this is going to be my first winter here, in Stockholm! I joined the choir of my university and we will have a concert on sankt Lucia's day, even tho most songs are Christmas songs. Fun fact, half of the choir is composed of Swedish, the other half we are italians 😂 so our pronunciation is still not the best 🤭
Haha, great mix half italians half Swedish. Just like the Lucia-tradition. Hope you are enjoying the Swedish winter a lot. To sing with other people is a great way to survive the dark winter month.
Yes I have had lussekatter, glogg and pepparkakor 😁 My mother's side is Swedish, though they haven't lived in Sweden for several generations. I did have the lussekattar and glogg later in life when i went to some swedish events and stores on my own :)
Yes!! You are right. There is a scene from Young Royals where they celebrate Lucia. Have you checked out our Young Royals video? If not, here it is th-cam.com/video/Cjx_Sg-z-4o/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=FunSwedish
It would be great if you guys could amalgamate the videos in your playlist...maybe consider doing amalgamated videos in volumes whenever you might update playlist so that you might have to go back and update the ones you have already edited. It will be very useful so that some students who might consider learning in one seating have one lengthy video instead on one video at a time. Just a suggestion. Also another video could be some proposed suggestion from fans about what everyday life is like in Sweden, i.e. what are some of the typical things Swedes do on a day-by-day. Would be great insider digest.
Så mork är Natten is a Lucia song that I particularly enjoy. I saw it years ago sung by a women's chorus from Rytmus Musikgymnasiet in Stockholm on Channel 4.
9:17 Ohhh!!!!! Now this is solved after 15 years . I was wondering when I was kid what 'Tom' in 'Tom and Jerry' is singing in the 'Duplicate Cat' episode.
Ay you got almost everything right! The only thing you didn't get right is the last word-while yes, that is a word, that form of ''american'' in swedish is not what you should use here. This is what I beleive you meant; Kram från en Amerikan or: Kram från Amerika (not trying to be rude, just trying to give constructive criticism)
I live in Estonia and I’m very interested in swedish so I go to a swedish school (Nuckö gymnasium). We learn swedish here and celebrate lucia. We were also invited to perform some lucia songs at the Swedish embassy in Tallinn. I am looking forward to it!😁 Also your videos are very helpful for locking in the things I’ve learned in school❤ tack så mycket 🙏
Hej! How wonderful that you are learning Swedish (and celebrating Lucia) in Estonia. I wish I could see your perform at the Swedish Embassy. Good luck with that! Have been to Tallinn once and it was a super cozy city. Will go back there one day and explore more. Tack för att du följer oss ❤
I remember participating in a Santa Lucia celebration with real candles that was lead by the Swedes who were in my class at the International School of Luxembourg. It was an interesting celebration 😅
This is interesting , I like sweden, I had bin there in 2016 , I loved the landscape and the food , like those chocolat bollar ? With the white powder on top, also yums in combination with lyngon juice. Once I hope to return for another visit. Further I think maybe glögg resembles gluewein?
Only Swedes would hold a festival full of people wearing candles on their heads at the library!! Haha... I visited Stockholms stadsbibliotek on my visit... needed to get away from family and get some work done, lol.
Question: Do you find it weird, if someone prefers reading a lot of texts, memorise their meanings, THEN start pronouncing the words? I can only form pronunciation in my head after seeing the words, and wondering if you've seen students like this 😂Thanks!
@@FunSwedish Thanks so much! I will enroll with you guys once I feel confident/comfortable enough. It takes me a long time to warm up to strangers (other students in the class).

I was very proud to be my Lucia in my hometown in Minnesota 🥰🥰🥰

How great that your Swedish family continued the Swedish traditions with lussekatter, glögg and pepparkakor even if you didnt live in Sweden :)
I know the first song from Young Royals 😊

Yes! That is a beautiful song and the chorus from Rytmus Musikgymnasiet is one of the best in Sweden :)
Thank you we celebrate St Lucia in England as our choir teacher is Swedish and we are singing Lusse Lella as a canon.

How amazing. My Catholic baptismal name is Lucia.
Ljus ljus stralande ljus is my favourite! I want to cry every time 😅
"Santa Lucia, la notte piú lunga che ci sia" (italian proverb meaning "Lucia, the largest night of the year)
Happy Lucia day 🫶🎊
Tack så mycket!
Love it! ❤ You have a beautiful voice! 😊
Visst är det bra. I'll be in Sweden for a week in January, then off to Oslo, on the early train.
Love lussekatter ❤. My sister makes them for me and sends them to me every year! Yes, I have a great sister!
You have the BEST sister for sure!
@@FunSwedish That's for sure!
Love learning from your videos!
BTW - I'm the sister. Make the lussekatters with love in New Jersey and ship express mail to California❣️
"Pure darkness" ... lol. And ja, jag älskar Jonnas version av låten (S:ta Lucia). It's nicely melancholy.
Ja, så fin låt!
I saw a real Luciatåg for the first time last December, it was really interesting! Sad that I will miss Lucia this year. Kram från Amerikansk

How cool that you could experience a real Lucia celebration in Luxembourg!
"Sul mare luccica, astro d'argento,
Placida l'onda, prospero il vento,
Venite all'agile, barchetta mia,
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia"
Seeeeee un italiano!
Any film related to it?

Yes, you should definitly try glögg next time you come back!
I usually watch Luciatåg on SVT Play.
