Very fair take on ND from Mr. Pate. Classy guy. The real ND hate south of the Mason -Dixon Line goes deeper and was more ingrained going back to the days when Rockne’s Ramblers were traveling to the Deep South and subsequent trips after Rockne died. There has always been a strong anti Catholic sentiment at places like SMU, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Texas, Oklahoma. These were tough places for ND to travel to because of the fans shouting anti Catholic slogans and throwing dead fish at the team on the sidelines. This happened as late as 1977 and 1978 in Clemson and Georgia Tech collectively. Lou Somogyi and I used to talk about that all the time!
I don't know why you two didn't just state the obvious when you were going on about the hatred of Notre Dame in the South. The biggest reason is because it is a Catholic University and it is in the North or Yankee country.
That's fine, you can feel like Notre Dame got cheated, and a case could be made they did, but Notre Dame doesn't claim 1993 as a championship, so neither will I.
