Heard about this performance for quite a few years from my dad and various bandsmen. I always wondered had the years added to the myth and was it really that good. Well this proves they were spot on. One of the great National Final Performances. Thanks for putting it on TH-cam.

Played with Morris Motors in the 1980s and the senior players in the band always talked about this as the best performance they had ever heard. They did say they thought that Alex Mortimer sitting was a bit of stunt though.
Never thought I would actually hear it. Isn't TH-cam wonderful!

Wow, heard all about that performance, and great to be able to listen to it all these years later. What can I say, masterful, Garside, Evans, Mortimer. Respect.

Peter was not only a very fine cornet player but developed into an outstanding conductor., an absolute natural.
When he took up the baton it did not take him long to ' win in London ' .
Being a true gentleman was just another of his many fine qualities.

Absolutely breathtaking - highest quality technique and musicianship. My first contest ever - and the CWS performance has lived with me ever since. Such artistry from Garside and Baglin (not forgetting Brian Evans on Sop). And a masterful direction from the middle by a seated Alex Mortimer.
Got the LP shortly afterwards, bur still prefer the slightly slower tempo of the contest performance, with all the drama that can only be captured in a live performance. The flugel's slight intonation problem had been addressed by the time the studio version was produced.
Heard this same piece by one of our very top bands just last weekend, but it came nowhere close to the magic of CWS in 1962.

Heard them play this in Sophia Gardens in the Co-op centenary year, the reason I started my musical career. Amazing!

So good to hear a performance that was not "oh look how clever we are, we can play it all really fast ( apart from the last bit, as we played the rest so fast we have got nowhere to go)"!!!
