Lovely story. I'll share one from my late father's memoirs. He was raised a totally secular Jew in Germany. At age 18, 1933, he was fortunate enough to be traveling on a train to join his family in Spain.
He shared a compartment with a Catholic priest, and felt a bit uncomfortable. The priest asked about his travels, and asked about his religion. My father responded that their family had no need of religion. The priest said, "So, you're Jewish, right? Young man, you possess a beautiful and precious religious legacy, and it's your responsibility to learn about it." My father stayed in touch with the man, who eventually became a bishop.
The fact that I've just listened to this talk gives you an idea of the impact of that priest's words.
