      I would love to hear advice regarding interview questions that I have no experience with. Tell me about a time when you needed to [insert something that has never in my professional life happened]. Do I start making something up and trying to pass it off as something that actually happened? Do I admit I have never been in that situation? What if I have been in that situation but in a setting such as in a leadership role at church or other setting that is not ideal to discuss in an interview?

      But what if the position wasn't posted on the job websites? Sometimes headhunters look for candidates for some senior positions through resources like LinkedIn profiles. How does one go about researching for what the job entails?

    I have the absolute most disdain for these STAR interview questions. They throw me for a loop and I'm often dumbstruck thinking up
    1) a situation that's relevant, in a job I had previously, searching back years of work experience in my head
    2) basic story plot
    3) spinning it in my favor
    My best responses are usually 100% fabricated because I can't think of a "time when [ridiculous scenario]" - but sometimes I can't even make up a fake story to answer to the question at all so I'm just left pausing for 10 seconds then saying "that's a great question, but I can't think of a specific time when [ridiculous scenario]. Terrible look in a job interview and I rarely get to the next step. I'm convinced it's impossible to answer these without hours, weeks, or months of preparation and going through dozens of different scenarios that you could be asked by an interviewer. The thing that I notice is that it's only HR that asks these questions. Hiring managers ask normal questions that are relevant to you, the company, and the job. I'm just frustrated because of how poorly I usually answer these STAR questions. Regardless of my personal frustration, this was a great video. Thanks for the advise. I'm working towards getting a few of these answers ready-to-go so I won't look like a fool next time I inevitably get asked one.

      I agree completely. I had an interview with three different people at one company. The first two people asked me all about job related experiences, skills, etc. I thought the interview was going great. The last person asked me fifteen FIFTEEN behavioral questions. There were two that I couldnt answer at all and I fumbled through another two or three. I didn't get the job.

      @@TheTravelCatalyst Don't go into behavioral interviews assuming that all answers must be career related. That greatly reduces your success rates. I was asked about a time in which I had to do research to complete a task. I changed the task part to something more broad and explained how I learned an entire second language by myself without taking or paying a dime for formal classes. The interview was being conducted in said language so that is the R for result.
      You can and should sometimes change the recruiters questioning in subtle ways so that you have the advantage while making their question even more interesting to themselves.

      I ALWAYS make up a fabricated story! lol I don't think they expect you to have actually been in that exact situation before., they're trying to see how good your problem solving skills are and if you can think quick on your feet! What do you do when you can't think of anything though? That's the issue I have. Even researching the questions in advance, or even after the interview is over, this me, "Uhhhh, I got nothing. It's never happened to me." "Tell me about a time you had to make a snap decision at work and what happened after it". Me, "Uhhh, it's never happened". Tell me about a time you had to deal with a difficult co-worker". Me, "What kind of horrible places have you worked that this is even a question?! I've never had that problem." Most of the time I literally just invent a story (lie) because otherwise I'm stuck with either it's never happened to me, or I can't remember a time when that's happened to me.

      I try to think about what we want the most, the interview group and myself. It boils down to how to best find ways to be person centered because I work in education and human services. I read letters of recommendation for me and highlight skills. I talk with people/ friends/ colleagues about my work experiences. I write and reword answers to interview questions after researching my own and other's listed experiences (internet blogs usually) that relate to my own. I write down instances when I have had to handle tasks similar to the one in the job description. I take notes with my best work scenarios and review it right before the interview. It doesn't always work but it helps a lot.

    I just got back from a job interview, and being a Friday I won't find out anything until next week, so I'll be biting my nails all weekend. They specialize their interviews specifically with the behavioral-based questions and STAR method. The first question I was asked before they got to the real questions was if I had heard of and was familiar with the STAR method, and I was able to respond to the affirmative, and immediately without missing a beat recited, "Situation, Task, Action, Result." The hiring manager and other interviewer were both very impressed by that, to my surprise. I hope that influences their decision. Also, they did say in the initial email response that they were impressed with my application, so that gives me a little more hope. Thing is, I had applied for this same job in past and had an interview, but was rejected, but I really want to get this job, so I'm on pins and needles right now.

That was the whole interview. She never once looked me in the eye. She didn't even know I was supposed to be there. I asked her to rephrase/clarify a question once and she just repeated it again because she clearly didn't know what else to do. Hi Cassandra, thank you so much for taking the time to upload your advice it's really an eye-opener for me as i have a big deal interview in a few days time. just a little feedback - I was using headphones to escape the noise in my own house, and I found it extremely difficult to really concentrate on what you were saying due to the background music. It really wasn't necessary and I had to try hard not to listen to it (it was neither a sound which was identifiable or clear, just annoying).
    I hope you take this as good critical feedback, and you're not offended, and I'm not suggesting this is something every viewer agrees with or even notices, it may just be me. xx

    Following the STAR method. I have these questions:
    Is it a good sign when your interviewer/ manager says that you are always on task?
    Is it a good sign using adjs such as great and outstanding after you answer certain question?
    Is it a good sign when they ask you about working at certain location?

    • @CassThompsonConsulting
      @CassThompsonConsulting  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those last two I would say are definitely good signs, but I wouldn't worry so much about that. Only look and reflect on what you can control- the part you did.

    Hi Cass! Thank you so much for your tips, I'm currently binging your videos for 2 upcoming interviews I have. I was wondering if I'm able to bring in situations/examples that don't necessarily relate to past work experiences I've had, especially if I haven't had that much experience? I was thinking situations in school (group projects, dealing with classmates, etc.) or even general life experiences?

    They're the favorites among hiring managers and they're literally the worst to get any type of idea of how the person truly is. It's 2019, if you want the best candidates to work for your company, ask questions about the actual job.

    Hi,
    Ideally, what should be the response for the below question that was asked in one of my interviews ?
    "What strategy would you set for yourself if you are successful for this role? Or what would you do if you are successful for this role or where you would get started?" The job was related to QA & QC in an engineering sector.
    Thank you,

    • @freyazsombory3122
      @freyazsombory3122 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It sounds like they want to know how you plan to succeed in that role; how will you bring value to the company if you are hired. Your answer should include a plan for solving the problem they have (the reason why they need to hire someone).
