Great score on the rescue hens. We got 5 chickens dumped on us in the middle of the night last year from a friend who knew we raised chickens. . Kinda caught us by surprise so we had to keep them in a dog kennel for the night until morning when we moved them to a small chicken coop we weren't using. In the morning they looked perfectly fine but we noticed lots of tail feathers missing, Feet where pretty rough with bumble foot and scaly legs. All got a warm epsom salt bath and shampooed. Vaseline applied to the scaly legs and bumble foot meds applied to the feet. We kept up a nice quiet routine with them as they where all super friendly and very hand tame. We did find out they where kept in a warehouse in a factory and fed only what scraps the workers gave them as well as lived on wire floors with no perches. Over the weekends no care was given to the girls. Where they housed in tight quarters? Possibly still finishing a molt or have been picked on with the tail feather issues. I would always err on the side of caution and quarantine them for at least 3 weeks before integrating them into your existing birds. Did you check the girls over for mites? Check there feet? Do you have roost bars in that barn set up for the girls to roost up om, It keeps the girls off the ground and when they roost at night they sit on there feet and keep warm. To me it's much more sanitary and natural for them to roost off the floor covering that has poop in it.

Hi! Thanks so much for sharing your experience & questions! Great feedback, & I enjoyed reading about your experience & learning from your insights!
Amazing rescue story y'all experienced. Great work helping them!!!
These hens could not free range out of courtesy to the neighbors where they lived, but they had a great coop with nice nest boxes & a place to roost & an attached run. There was an attached enclosure that may have been cramped for them if they were in it, but it may have just been a nighttime enclosure for their safety from predators. I didn't get the impression they had to stay in it very much. They were definitely well cared for at their home, & their owner wanted good care to continue for them. Their run had a chicken wire cover over it, & some recent snow collapsed the support for it; also, a hawk recently got a hen from this flock when the coop cover was compromised. The owners also had some problem with either weasels or mink previously, too, I think. At present, they were not going to be able to repair the chicken area & keep the chickens. They wanted to rehome them to a good place for them to live, & several people offered to split the group up & take them, but the owners contacted us earlier in the day to see if we were posdibly interested in receiving them. It worked out great we could accommodate them & keep the whole group together. We're planning some little chicken coops that hopefully we can get the lumber for on this Friday evening...these girls will get new digs first of all the birds...hopefully during next weekend, hopefully...nothing fancy, but something just for them. Then the Rhode Island Red pullets will also hopefully get their new digs. Neither of these groups will be mixed with our current egg sales hens. When we can get this building empty, we will totally clean it out & let it sit empty until meat birds arrive in March.
You are right...total quarantine would have been best practice, but this was suitable & the best option we had available to us. Yes, checked feathers & feet, & all is well. No mites. No foot problems. Yes, they do have roost perches in this building; when we checked the gals at 9, they were roosting on them. I was glad to see they were looking content. Agree...a roost is preferable to them sleeping on the coop flooring.
Thanks very much! God bless y'all. Have a great week! We greatly appreciate all your tips! Thanks!

Yes! They're so pretty, & they are settling in well. I'm excited to get a new coop for them...hopefully next weekend! Too bad the weather is so cold for all the chickens but we just checked on everybody, & all is well. Fortunately, the new girls are looking content & comfortable. Thanks so much for watching & commenting & supporting our channel, Cindy! God bless y'all!

Hi, Tina! Thank you!!!! The previous owner took very good care of them & wants them to continue to have a good home. Part of their run collapsed from a recent snow, & I'm glad she let me know they were looking for a home for them. We're happy to have them here. Looking forward to seeing them settle in here & getting them a new coop just for them hopefully very soon.
Thanks very much for watching & commenting & supporting our channel.
      God bless y'all, Tina!
