    I can't count how many painting tutorials I have watched since my son took up playing Lion Rampant. I really appreciate the simple, yet quality results you achieve in a reasonable time. I also really enjoy the miniatures finished esthetic you create. Nicely done.

      I think we're in the same boat! I've been doing this a pretty decent while now, but every couple of weeks someone will come along with a new tool or technique that shaves a few minutes off of a paint job. Always worth keeping an eye out for someone else's cunning ideas!

    Oh man I absolutely love this colour scheme - as you say it's quite Gondorian and it looks amazing.
    Would be really intrigued to see your take on a Landsknecht; so many ludicrous colours and flamboyant clothing would make for a very interesting tutorial! (plus I'm painting a few up myself atm and could do with the pointers :p)

    Great tutorial! I did not think that there was a difference between the Agrax Earthshade and Strong but you cleared that up so I can see how different they work. Thanks for sharing this.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad it was helpful! There's a tendency to call them 'the same thing' and be done with it, but they pool on a miniature very differently to one another and give fairly different results. I tend to find Strong Tone with a bit of medium works better if I'm wanting to highlight a miniature without having to use the basecoat a second time.

    Great tutorial as per usual! Some nice thoughts upon colour choices and examples of the importance of fine brush control. The result is a characterful little mini who might (?) also double as a Dark Ages/Early Medieval tribal leader or champion. Excellent work. xx Sf

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I hadn't even thought of using him in an actual historical game! I suppose he'd work for a medieval-ish adventurer type with the gear he's got; there's nothing too fantastic about him, except perhaps that helmet design. He's a great little figure, though! The Oathmark human infantry would work brilliantly as town guard or militia in most games.

    • @stevesandford1437
      @stevesandford1437 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SonicSledgehammerStudio Oh, I think The Helmet isn't too far from Dark Ages/Viking design... The shield hints at a more 'Roman' look, (though it's not 'curved' like a Scutum...) but I'd think he'd pass in quite a few Dark Ages armies!!! (And it would give him a break from fighting supernatural creatures like skeletons and giant ogres!!!!) xx SF

    Back in the early 2000s, there was a couple of youngsters at my gaming club who were some of the best and most prolific army painters I've ever seen. They'd paint a 1500 point 40K army in about three days. First thing they did was cover every model in Scorched Brown - gave every model they did a really rich tone. So nice to see you doing the same with Rhinox Hide :)

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      As chance would have it, I think it was around that era that I'd first seen the overall Scorched Brown shade. Must have been something in the water! I remember it being used as the first stage in someone painting one of the Aragorn miniatures - seemed appropriate to carry that on forward to the present.

    Cool, Rangers and Sonic Sledgehammer collide in a very, very special episode. That mini is wonderfully atmospheric and the paint job is super sympathetic to the Ranger's tone. That's a very nice Rhinox hide Haubergeon. ;)

    Excellent video as always, thank you. I agree with you 100% about the differences between Citadel and Army Painter shades. I am highly intrigued about adding mixing medium to the shade. What does it do to it? Soften the shade colour? Or make it more glossy? I’m going to have to get a bottle and experiment I see. Thanks for the “homework” assignment! 🤪 Thanks again and stay safe! Cheers 🍻

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The mixing medium thins out the colour of the Strong Tone a little without changing how it applies to the miniature. Adding just water will give you a similar effect, but the shade won't then pool in the recesses in quite the same way - and in my experience, can sometimes end up a little patchy and dirty-looking instead! It's really useful stuff; ordinarily I find it lets me go from basecoat to highlight without having to worry about reapplying the base colour for a smoother transition.

      @@SonicSledgehammerStudio Thank you, Sir! I had to run out and pick my daughter up from school...So I used that as an excuse to stop at my local hobby shop. Sonic, I'm huge fan of your table top tutorials. I'm sorry to be one more fella in row asking about Agrax VS Strong Tone. If I understand it right, you would go for Agrax in case you wanna reapply the base color again before you aplly layering color(s)? I use mainly Citadel and few VMC I learned from your tutorials. But that Alchemy when and why applying AP tones instead of the others is still quite a secret for me. Based on more reactions regarding that, a tutorial dedicated to such a topic would be highly appreciated by many.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's really down to the final tone you're looking to get. For bright colours, a white undercoat. For darker stuff, use black. If you can find a coloured primer that will work for the majority of the colour on a miniature, then just use that. Grey is a good middle-ground for just about anything. All it takes is a bit of practice and experimentation and you'll find what works for you.
