I DNF’d The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store as well…I was so bored and felt bad I didn’t like it since Barnes and Noble said this was the best of the year. Thanks for making me feel better about that!😂
Love Backman but for some reason am struggling with Beartown. I have the whole trilogy as well as most of his other books and can officially say that Ove and Anxious People are great books.
Haven’t read The Book That Wouldn’t Burn but I have read Mark Lawrence’s Book of the Ancestor trilogy (Red Sister, etc.), and I really loved it and didn’t find it confusing at all so you may still enjoy his other work!
Heyooo Syd 👋 I’m excited to read (and liked!) Thursday Murder Club, I thrifted it recently and am hoping to get to it soon 🤞 I’ve also had Crying in H Mart on my shelves for ages 🫣
Kings of the Wyld sounds like a book I need to add to my April stack because I have a lot of heavy reads this month and could use a laugh. Also, Serious Concerns was on my radar, but I think I'll make more of an effort to get it. Thanks for the frank reviews.
I listened to the audiobook for Ripe also this month was surprised how much I liked it, especially as someone who reads maybe 2 contemporary books a year
Heaven & Earth Grocery Store is one of my favorites of the year! Goes to show how different reading tastes can be because I DNFd Everyone in my family has killed someone (but loved Thursday Murder Club too!)
The Book that Wouldn’t Burn has been on my TBR list for a while. After your review I immediately took it off. I have read books that make me feel stupid and they were half that size and I hated it! Can’t imagine dedicating so much time to a book that will make me feel that way.
I also felt that The Book That Wouldn’t Burn was far too long, and I was struggling to make it through the audiobook, but then it did have some intrigue at the end. I completely agree.
Recently started listening to mysteries via audiobook while on my walks/runs and have been enjoying them so much- definitely want to give Richard Osman a try now. 😀
Hmm. I just recently bought The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store and I was very excited to read it. I am also a very character driven reader so I think I still may like it, but I also do need at least a little bit of plot! So we’ll just have to see.
I felt exactly the same way as you about The Book That Wouldn’t Burn! I was so frustrated and ended up DNFing at 20%. I then looked up the plot and I really don’t feel like it would have been worth it to continue.
Since you like audio books, may I recommend listening to "The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store" on Audible? The narration is soooo good and really helps the story along. I'm not sure I would have been able to get through the book if I was physically reading it but the audiobook was so good and I felt much more connected to the storyline and the characters. The narrator on Audible for this book is outstanding. It was a 4 star for me after listening! Love your videos and reviews!
yea, but even when listning to the book, I was a bit bored. I liked his voice (not going to lie thats the only reason why i kept going) I was just like ¨This is the best book in 2023?¨ it made me sad after I was done with it. I think i took a break of reading after that....
Thanks for these great reviews. I'm excited to pick up Ripe. P.S. I just bought a copy of Something In The Water at a local thrift store for $1!! Im looking forward to reading it this year. Happy reading!! 🙂
I finished The Book That Wouldn’t Burn today after a heck of a long time reading it. It wasn’t until 70% that my interest really came in and then the book ended with something I kind of understood but messed with my head enough to not want to continue with the trilogy. I liked some of the concepts that I understood and enjoyed some of the humour. I will try some of his other books as I have a few on my Kindle, though they will be moved down the priority list.
The way you felt about The Book that Wouldn’t Burn is exactly how I felt when reading The Starless Sea in January. However, I will say I think about The Starless Sea constantly so I will probably end up rereading it at some point.
So, a number of people who like similar books to me also didn't like the Book that Wouldn't Burn. This doesn't mean I won't ever read it - but it defiitely slide down the TBR by a LOT (and my TBR is legitimately over 1000 books long sooooooo). I'm still going to give Heaven and Earth Grocery store a shot and I look forward to future reviews!
I love your videos and was so excited when you posted. I saw the heaven and earth grocery store at my supermarket yesterday and was going to buy it, now I think I’ll just read it from my library lol.❤😅
I think your experience with The Book That Wouldnt Burn is how I felt about Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. Not that TTT was difficult, I just thought the writing wasn't good and as someone who works in games, completely unrealistic and frustrating.
Your comments on the Mark Lawrence book make me _very_ nervous for you to read Harrow the Ninth 😓 (I don't think I'm interested in him as an author, haven't picked him up, but all your commentary could have easily been about Harrow, lmao. Even down to the page count and when things make sense)
I DNF’d The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store as well…I was so bored and felt bad I didn’t like it since Barnes and Noble said this was the best of the year. Thanks for making me feel better about that!😂
Just added Kings of the Wyld to the TBR! Can’t wait to read it
Since you love character driven books, have you read Anxious People and A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman? I loved them and maybe you would too.😊
I loved anxious people too!! The Beartown series by him is amazing as well🥰
I know she read anxious people, I forget if she's read the other two lol
Love Backman but for some reason am struggling with Beartown. I have the whole trilogy as well as most of his other books and can officially say that Ove and Anxious People are great books.
It’s funny because I really liked the Heaven and Earth Grocery Store and I’ve DNFd The Starless Sea twice 😅 I appreciate hearing different opinions 🦥
Kings of the wyld was a fun time and four stars for me too!
Haven’t read The Book That Wouldn’t Burn but I have read Mark Lawrence’s Book of the Ancestor trilogy (Red Sister, etc.), and I really loved it and didn’t find it confusing at all so you may still enjoy his other work!

I was not that into The Starless Sea, so maybe I'll like The Book that Wouldn't Burn? idk but it's on my TBR

kings of the wyld is so good!! i was laughing so much hahaha it was quite intimidating but ended up being ridiculous in the best way possible 🤣
Crying in H mart is one of my favorite books. Started reading without knowing it war a memoir hanahah but it’s amazing
I'm so glad you read Crying in H Mart AND gave it 5 stars. 🥹🥹🥹
I listened to the audiobook for Ripe also this month was surprised how much I liked it, especially as someone who reads maybe 2 contemporary books a year
I read Crying in H Mart in March too!
Heaven & Earth Grocery Store is one of my favorites of the year! Goes to show how different reading tastes can be because I DNFd Everyone in my family has killed someone (but loved Thursday Murder Club too!)
Lol. I still want to read The Book That Wouldn’t Burn. The one bookstore we have in my city doesn’t have it. 😭

Totally agree with you on The Book That Wouldn’t Burn. I had to DNF it bc it just felt NEVERENDING and soooo confusing

I hate feeling confused in books. I like it when there's some mystery and intrigue, but if it just doesn't make sense, I'll get real grumpy
I just lold because exactly. I also get grumpy in those times😂
The BOTM Box placement was very smooth! My April pick was Dragonfruit which was one of my anticipated releases of the year!!! 🦥
I’m new to booktube world and I’m Loving your channel!!! 📚🫶🏻
Thanks for these great reviews. I'm excited to pick up Ripe.
P.S. I just bought a copy of Something In The Water at a local thrift store for $1!! Im looking forward to reading it this year. Happy reading!! 🙂
so excited to watch this!

I thought the second book in the Thursday Murder series is even better and is wonderful on audio!❤
Me too
🦥in was really on the mark Lawrence book
I've only had one 5 star read this year. And that was in January! I am PRAYING that I will find a 5 star in April 💐💌

I tried twice and I couldn’t get through this book. But at your recommendation I will try audiobook now
Super love! ❤❤

I'm glad to be here early :D 🦥
I DNF’d The Book that Wouldn’t Burn. I just really really didn’t understand it, so I must be dumb!
📙 😊
