I used to collect money from charity boxes a few years ago. One particular shop in Walsall which had a box was always full to the brim with pound coins (a lot of money) and the shopkeeper used to say that it was Paul Merson who regularly put the money in. Yes a great friend indeed and a top bloke :)
I used to be a bouncer and once I was lucky enough to be watching Paul Merson while he was doing a public engagement gig , he came to the club after to hang out and after we closed he stayed and spoke at length to the team and all the young bar staff about how quickly alcohol , gambling and drugs can ruin your life from his own experiences , it was incredible and something I always remember whenever I see him on TV. remember watching this when it was televised and even today upsets me - i LOVE this generation of England legends - they all still look out for each other especially Merse who has been through addiction - - true friends
I understand this. Im currently fighting an addiction and its hard and emotional. We all need help and with true friends who care and love you, we will get through it

Paul’s strength in bringing this subject to the tip of his friendship and showing the emotions inside him, really does show how strong a person he is. Magic Man forever.
if you're worried about your mates you should do the same, seeing them upset for a couple of hours is worth seeing them make a change that will sort their lives out

Emotional. Deep. I had a best friend too. He was a gambling addict. One day he started gambling and losing control of it. I could see he was going to rinse his hard earned cash so I stopped him by blocking his card. He thanked me.. eventually he turned against me a while later..so I, with a heavy heart, walked away from this 20 year friendship and kept walking. Still if he needed help today I would find it hard to say no.

I really do hope that merson doesn't have a relapse. I found the first bit around the table, really patronising and annoying by merson, obviously everyone with a drinking problem knows it, and most wouldnt appreciate the lecture by merson, especially in public. Sometimes if someones doesnt want to talk you have to let it lie (or your 'through the window"!). Ive been in recovery for almost 2 years (i can tell you the time and date to the second!), and wish both men well, its a bugger, alcohol
I've been an alcoholic 20+ years I'm coming up 3 years sober in January if I can get clean and maintain sobriety anyone can. My wife supports me 100% she hasn't touched a drop in 3.5 years in order to support me and the fact she hates alcohol.

I remember when Neil Ruddock deliberately elbowed Peter Beardsley in the face so hard that he fractured (shattered) his cheekbone. This was in the first 2 minutes of a pre-season friendly. Ruddock had a good laugh about it. Good to see him suffering now

I met Paul on a flight once and he was such a nice guy. Just sitting in economy as well, not up front. But boy is he scared of flying! Top bloke.
