Don't Fall for These Car Dealership Tricks!

- How do dealerships tricks you to spend more? We show you the trick and how to respond. If you're thinking of buying a car in 2024, try to hold off until July 30. That's when the Federal Trade Commission's new CARS rule goes into effect, which forces dealers to stop using shady tactics like peppering you with hidden fees, overcharging for silly extras like nitrogen in your tires, and luring you in with fake online prices.
Many dealers are honest and but how many will keep acting shady, even after the rules go into effect. I've seen car dealerships brazenly ignore consumer protection laws that are already in place. Which is why knowing these tricks can save you money.
The CARS rule will help bring some controls on overcharges that consumers pay and have no clue on how to escape them.
Here are the most common dealer ripoffs to look out for, and how to respond. Not every dealer will try such shenanigans, many of them are perfectly reasonable and easy to deal with, but some dealers will and it pays to be prepared!
To end on a positive note, the CARS rule is a massive win for car buyers, and many dealerships didn't need it in the first place. But there are also dealerships out there that will try one of these sneaky tactics when you're shopping for your next car.
But if you go in confident and prepared, you're more likely to walk away with the car you want at a price you can afford. Share this advice and help others.

Amen, I work at a dealership and hear so many horror stories from customers. Fortunately we gained a lot of customers from it tho. 😅 Great video
😊
@@CarCoachReportsNot all parts are under warranty.
Recent shopping for a car I liked one at Auto Nation. They wouldn’t budge on the rather expensive price for the used car. The used car price was $52k. But when I requested the drive out price, it was $61k! Hidden in the price was three upcharges for about $5k. They would not negotiate. Walked out.
One thing dealers love to sell you is GAP insurance to your loan & you can buy that elsewhere for much less. If you lease then GAP is automatically included.
Great video, Lauren, as always! We just bought a 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Summit Reserve. F&I guy tried to sell us on a warranty, we declined. Though I have to say, the dealer wasn't high pressure as we have experienced at some other dealerships. These things are a boondoggle, if you really want an extended warranty, buy it on your own, post purchase, for a lot less, the dealers make a lot of money on useless warranties!
Thank you! Great advice- I agree. These F&i people make their money on all the upselling. Glad you had a great experience
Saturn closed shop due to GM diverting monies from Saturn to prop up Oldsmobile, but Oldsmobile failed anyway and that money diversion caused Saturn to fail. Good job GM.
5:59 I had to do this with my Jeep, the throttle body went bad at 35,000 miles but just past 36 months. The dealer wouldn't warranty the part so I called Chrysler. Next day I got a call from the dealer with a compromise.
The "Stealership" model has become all too common in many markets. Our local dealers have gotten wise to the Out the Door requests and simply refuse to give you information. I had to travel over 100 miles from home to find a dealer hungry enough to deal fairly - for the most part. The "F and I" guy had to show up in the showroom to do his pitch because I made it clear I was not going to his office. I shut him down in 15 seconds flat and he huffed off with no sale. Bottom line is most dealers do not deserve your business or respect. When they act out simply stand up and walk out - don't even say thank you or goodbye.
Dealers are sneaky with the Lemon Law too. They will list, describe, or categorize the same repeat problem differently every time to avoid triggering the Lemon Law requirements. They will also get the manufacturer involved to do a non-repair manual approved patch job, write you a small check, and then have you waive the rest of your warranty. Alternatively, the dealer and manufacturer will ignore a known problem, and blame the customer for not knowing how to drive.
I come out on top of all deals almost 100% of the time. Over 50 years of buying oil and gas properties which I have to value with no book to go by. Car dealers run their scams on people that let them. They hate me.
Sure they do tough guy, people who get great deals don’t feel the need to brag about it.
Walk away if you dont like the deal, i do it all the time. In a few days you will get a call back.
I have found that this is mostly not the case. I walked away from more than 25 deals last year and I did receive about five callbacks but none of those callbacks actually included the dealer wanting to make any concessions really on their price. A couple of them offered me a couple hundred dollars off but I was shopping used cars which had many thousands of dollars differentiation in price.
@@Jimster481 It all depends how desperate they are. My experience has mostly been for new cars. The last few years have been very strange. I find I get the best deals at the.end of the year when they are getting ready for the new models.
@@daved6464 Well I was shopping from September through Mid December. Ended up buying a LEAF S Plus 2021 private party for $13k. Best price I had found in a dealer was $15k(plus fees) and this was after months of negotiating. So ultimately it ended up being thousands of dollars cheaper. Especially because the other cars were in other states; no dealers in the state of FL wanted to negotiate at all.... they wanted to sell high mileage cars for more than the private party guy.
No matter how good I think I did buying a new car, there has never been a time I've left the dealership not feeling that I got taken advantage of in some way.
you can take your car to most tire stores and ask about road hazard warranty cost on tires you already have
Spent 20 years in the retail auto industry pushing "iron". Can I tell you some stories.
We recently purchased a car in which we had to pay $1,000 deposit while they order the car. Then, when the car came in and they wrote up the paperwork, they neglected to subtract the $1,000 deposit that we had paid. Naturally, I insisted that they redo the paperwork.
If it was an accident, that would be fine but if it was intentional, that’s just plain nasty. Glad you caught it.
Here in Virginia the dealers are allowed to add a $500 "prep" fee to the sale of EVERY vehicle. No exceptions. This is a load of crap as I used to live in NYS and the same fee there was $90 which basically pays for all of the dmv and insurance transfer for the customer, which was still high, but most customers never questioned as they DON'T want to go to the DMV.
Wow thanks for adding the info
When the DOC fee exceeds $200 you are getting ripped off. It takes less than an hour for a dealer to process all your paperwork. In fact the computer does most of the work on pre-formatted forms. When they say thy have to charge everyone the same price just say fine, take the excess off the cost of the car and they can leave whatever they want for the DOC fee just as it is. In some states they rip you to the tune of $990 which is 90% profit.
One common trick a bad dealer will do is add window tinting to a new car and add on a a $250 to $500 fee to the sticker price. If you are shopping for a car and see this walk away immediatley.
thousands for a 30 dollar hidden gps theft device, over 500 for 35 dollars of window protectant jel...
as soon as a salesman tells me what I want, i tell them good bye after i tell his boss he doesn't have psychic abilities
Wheels and tire warranty is a must, I believe, cause mine coast 1k when I purchased my Volvo. 2 years later need to replace 2 tires but insurance didn't cover but lucky that warranty changed all 4 tires and repaired damage rims
no one wants to give you a price unless you sit in the dealership for over an hour..
Thank you
You're welcome
Didn’t have much luck with the Costco dealer referral service. The salesman was still an annoying jerk.
Aren't they all
What do you think about using auto broker services through Costco, credit unions, Auto Club, AARP, etc.? Thanks for all you do.
Sometimes you can negotiate a better better deal on your own. You can also email the dealer and make your life a little easier to communicate with multiple dealers. Some of these buying services are only good for those who don’t like to negotiate.
Yea, so the dude offered me a justification for the "Local Market Adjustment", $3,000 extra. Free tire rotations, Oil changes, and special windshield warranty.
😂nope - walk away and find another dealer
This woman is smart and absolutely gorgeous 😘
Gap insurance is a big ripoff. It's padded big time by the dealership and how they present it to you is how much more per month you'll be paying instead of the total amount of the insurance because if they told you that, you would freak out. Honestly skip the gap insurance. However if you still feel you need something, many auto insurance companies offer "new car replacement insurance" where if you total your car, they will pay you what the next model year car would cost so you can pay off your current loan in full and most likely have money left over to buy another car. Way better than gap insurance since you wouldn't get extra back on top of paying off the loan if you went with gap. And this addon for your car insurance is like 25% the cost of gap insurance over five years (typical auto loan). so you save money.
What would be the reason for I haven't been bothered, see, I haven't been making the monthly payment on my Toyota sienna 1999.
I have found that most car dealers at least here in Florida do not want to negotiate at all. I wasted three months last year trying to negotiate for a Nissan Leaf which was not even a car that was selling. Most of these cars are actually still for sale six months to eight months later and the prices have not changed very much. I really don't know what's going on with the car market but the dealers are probably all going to go bankrupt. To me, it makes no sense to not negotiate at all, and honestly, this is just their standard policy here in Florida now.
This new law to stop them advertising garbage pricing needs to come quickly because my experience is that 90% of dealerships have totally fake pricing and include many thousands of dollars in fees on top of their listed car price. Some of them as much as $10,000 in fees, which is utterly ridiculous.
Let them go out of business. Once too many go under the manufacturers will pick up the slack with direct selling.
@@garyjarvis2730 Well they likely will and I won't feel bad for them at all.
Dealers just straight don't want to sell cars unless it is at the numbers that they want.
Where did you get this information a simple little Google query
Just bought a new Subaru, dealers are still charging a "supply chain hardship" fee of $75. I called SOA to see if this was normal as of May 2024 and they said yes.
Wow - that is a money grab!
Boring.
I'd rather hear people LIE and say they walked away over the price of a meal difference after hours at the dealership.
@SmittyAZ 😆
Sounds exactly like the memphis area toyota dealership’s
Are you positive on the July 30th date I thought it was pushed back.
They have pushed it back. But still be aware and knowledge is power.
FTC law is on hold pending lawsuits from dealers.
Eh Sista Lauren. Recommend me some Lexus purchase strategy. Mahalo.
Shop around. There’s multiple dealers in every single state and they’ll ship the vehicle to you because they want your business.
@@CarCoachReports mahalo Lauren. Quick response. Impressed. BTW, I watch yo TH-cam often. Yu Da Bess Kine. 🙂 Hawaii, there is only one dealer... I am looking at RX 350H and 450H+. Also, I drive not much as I work from home. Any thoughts on these two. Mahalo nui loa Lauren.
I was tricked into an extended warranty! They said Finance company wouldnt take the loan unless I got the warranty🧐
you tell them that you will contact a lawyer and a local TV station.Im sure they would of thought different
Absolutely completely B. S. vast majority of V. S. C or extended warranties have 60 day minimum money back time frame. I know this from first hand experience. Bought a VSC from dealer 450 miles away " where I bought car" in past Sept. Week later went to my local dealer and then started a bidding competition between both dealerships. Got and extra $450 refund from issuing dealership.
That wasn’t a trick, that was illegal, report them for what they did.
Easy squeezy. I’m taking you to the dealer with me next time Sister. 😊
West herr chevy in Williamsville NY tried to screw me on simonize wax on my Tahoe. When i caught them in the finance office i told the scum bag that if he doesnt take that off my contract i will call the owner(CEO Scott Biehler) and tell him how much the customers are getting screwed.
Hello, i always knew minimum warranty periods to be 36,000 miles or 3 years, so why does Toyota now only cover 25,000 miles or 2 years?
Toyota changed this just a few years ago. Are they not following the law?
Thats for the complimentary oil changes and tire rotation. Not the warranty
I’ve had no problems buying new from dealerships. I ask to deal with a mature age person over 50. Not interested in dealing with young kids trying to bullshit me.
All you should have to pay is the agreed upon price plus taxes, title, and ta
Should be taxes, title, and tags.
I am going to buying used probably at a dealership. I will be paying cash and will not be trading in a car. Am I going to have a hard tome doing this?
I just did the same thing you're going to do. Remember to NOT mention you'll be paying cash until you get the exact out the door price you want. Then, drop the cash bombshell on them in the finance office
@@user-wv8rd2om3f Do you really think that dealers don't know that game?
Last time I went to the stealership to buy a car I had cash but played their game with the finance dept. I said I wanted to "explore my options" before deciding on financing options. Once they found out I was paying cash they were PISSED and showed me the door. Apparently they don't accept cash.
I will NEVER set foot in ANY dealership after that experience.
@@user-wv8rd2om3f When you ask for the "exact door price" they get wise to your game. They will NEVER divulge this. They become confrontational and combative.
Car dealers are the scum of the earth. They have no interest in dealing with someone who won't play their slimy games.
DO NOT EVER BE EMBARRASSED TO DRIVE OFF THE LOT FOR $500. (By the way, all air has mostly nitrogen 78%, and that gets higher each time you add more air to your tires. It’s the biggest scam.)
The advice that we the buyers get from the experts on what to say, what not to answer, the end of deal trade in, etc., don't the dealers know what we're doing?
I love Tesla for many reasons, one is I don’t have to deal with a criminal enterprise known as an American car dealership.
The dealership sales people aren't horrible but the real crooks are in the finance department. Once at Toyota dealership on Boston Rd Bronx, I could hear the other end of the conversation with Capital One saying my interest rate would be 9 percent. He got off the phone and told me the rate would be 16 percent because of my credit. Of course I left and went to a different Toyota dealership and told everyone who would listen to avoid that clip joint. Get your own loan first before you go in and pay the advertised price or walk out! I think I cost them a whole bunch of money 😮
I was with you until you said bumper to bumper. If you work in this industry you know very well there is no bumper to bumper warranty.
Everything is warrantied except the one thing that's broken on your car. Every single time!

Dealers trying to sell people cars that they do not want. Or refuse to sell a car because people do not want to use the in house financing company.
When entering the dealership and after a few minutes talking to the salesperson DO NOT HAND OVER YOUR LICENSE when said person asks for it. You’ll be there for hours before you get it back. I give them a copy with a few digits altered. If they don’t like it then bye bye.
Why not ? If you want to test drive a car your interested in your method will not go well.
Why not? If I have to go thru all kinds of bs to test drive a car, like the lady says ‘ go someplace else’. And why can’t I hold my license while test driving the car. It should only matter that I’m a licensed driver, right?
🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇
Give someone a big microphone and a cheap camera and they think they’re an expert. Next.
All car dealers are 100 percent scum. You state . . . "Many dealers are honest". How dare you say such a Lie. Thumbs down from me -:(
