Demian is my favorite book! It was just what I needed to read when I was in high school, and it set me on a path of critical thinking about matters such as spirituality and morality.
I am actually unable to find the book. There are so many options available in Amazon but I am confused which one to buy. Can you please tell me which publisher's DEMIAN you read.
I really love how Hesse focuses and expands on the thoughts of the protagonist. The way he admired Demian and was fascinated by how someone could go against conventional religious teachings really resonated with me since I went through something similar back in high school/early college days.
Demian is very popular in South Korea. It is referenced in K-Dramas and K-Pop, like BTS's "Wings." Which is what brought me to this site. Not as popular or well-known in the U.S.
@@rahmael-shahrour1709 Actually I was just about to watch The Glory. Good to know. Also Dreamcatcher has a new song called Demian - which is clearly based on the novel.
@@rahmael-shahrour1709 You should check out their new title track "Bon Voyage." There may be a guest appearance by the Sparrow hawk (although some people think it is a dove or a pigeon).
I wish I had found this book during my High School years. It will be on a highly suggested reading list for my sons once they are old enough, without a doubt.
For any and all who view Demian as containing a philosophy of life worth adopting you would be doing yourself a disservice if you have not yet read Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. Hesse paints a rosy picture of the embodied philosophy of Demian (his voice for the philosophy of Nietzsche). I would argue that Dostoevsky paints a far more realistic picture of what this philosophy looks like in reality. Either way, one must always examine the other perspective. Proverbs 18:17 "The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him." Dostoevsky does an incredible job cross-examining Nietzsche.
Was thinking about this exact thing while reading Demian. By adopting this philosophy of abraxas and believing in their purpose as in some cases transcending moral reason, one could very well end up like Raskolnikov. I'm glad I've read two different perspectives on the subject though.
I just finished Demian and honestly I have hard time with thick books (also descriptive writing like for example how Albert Camus sometimes writes because I have very bad aphantasia) but I am considering picking Crime and Punishment now mostly because I want to see different side of this argument of Hesse about good and evil. Thank you for your comment.
i read crime and punishment and demian back to back and found myself making the same comparison repeatedly, i think while the ideas explored in demian are interesting it can be dangerous to approach life with the idea of being born special and better than everyone else because of some quality that you just Have. which just so happens to be what crime and punishment is about! every time demian or sinclair talked about the mark of cain and how they have it and understand so much more about the world it just made me think of raskolnikov thinking the same thing. (especially with them specifically mentioning napoleon a few times, that was raskolnikovs favorite guy)
Is Demian the same name as Damien in french or Damian in english? By the way its the name or family name of character, because i think his name was max , am i right?
@@PersonalPower Hi :) BTS is a south Korean boy band. They have this song called 'Blood, Sweat and Tears', which includes a lot of symbolism from Demian. It's quite interesting actually. If you would like to take a look (not for the music part, just for their interpretation of Demian and Nietzschean theories), I would recommend : th-cam.com/video/5tlgAUE6yjg/w-d-xo.html

I read Demian because of BTS and it's so special to me and my favorite book now. I'm so thankful to be a fan of a group like BTS who introduce us to books like Demian and Jung's theories!
The Timothy Leary book "Politics of Ecstacy" lists a number of cultural influences that impacted the nascent psychedelic movement of the 60s. Hesse had a section ... I'm thinking Santana was the recipient of a recommendation from that community?
Something went wrong with the audio recording. Sorry about that!

Exactly the same for me! It's so perfect and helpful for those in their late teens!

Demian is my favorite books, I like those genres.
I was named after this book heehee
Love Hesse, was reading him at 13, 14... while living in Germany.
aww there is a dog it's soo cute🤩
What genre is this book? I love it so much and want to find other books like it
Not quite sure in which genre it belongs but herman hesse produced more excellent books, might be worth checking out
I would maybe describe it as a „Bildungsroman“
Existential Modernist
@@brummbrumm8344 that too
I doubt that anybody not German or at least very proficient in the language and culture is able to grasp the beauty and depth of Hesse's work.

It's a semi-anagram of Daimon. Look up what a Daimon is. Not the same as a "demon" by the way.
re: the protagonist Emil Sinclair, is Sinclair a reasonably common German surname?
No it isn't. Not even the name Emil is reasonably common today. I don't recall ever meeting someone named either Emil or Sinclair.
Sinclair is a Scottish surname. I presume he chose it because the Sinclairs were involved with the Knights Templar and Roslin Chapel near Edinburgh.
And this is where bts has bought me
