There were 5 eggs this year in the stork nest on the 32 meter high church tower of the parish of St. Gallus in Kirchzarten in the Dreisamtal, a vacation paradise about 10 km east of Freiburg im Breisgau.
It hatched 3 storks, they are ringed today at the age of 30 approx. days. This is done to investigate migration behavior and causes of death as well as to gain knowledge about mate fidelity and lifespan. The more exactly we know the life and the behavior of the storks, the more purposefully we can protect them with threatening dangers. The rings are made of plastic and begin with the letter sequence "DER" for "Deutschland Vogelwarte Radolfzell", followed by an individual character sequence with which the animal can be clearly identified. The following numbers are used:
DER ACA 00
DER ACA 01
DER ACA 02
Special binoculars allow the ring numbers to be read from a distance of 200 meters and more. In addition, webcams with zoom lenses attached to nests help, like our camera in Kirchzarten. The young storks have to be ringed before they can fly. You ring them on the left on odd years, on the right on even years.
Our stork expert is trained and experienced. He climbs out of the roof hatch of the church tower and is secured with a rope. He reaches the nest via a ladder hooked to the nest base. The old stork flees, leaving the young alone, but watches them constantly from the air, where he circles inexorably. Two young storks play dead, the third flees to the rear edge of the nest. The stork expert first rings the 2 lying storks and then takes care of the third. He carefully lifts him forward, he gets the ring with the number DER ACA 02. Gerhard Hinz, the stork expert, signals that everything went to his satisfaction. After 6 minutes he climbs back into the roof truss, pulls in the ladder and closes the skylight. The storks remain in a state of shock until the old stork returns after about 15 minutes.

Stört es die Eltern nicht, dass die Jungen mit Menschen in Kontakt kommen? Ich war immer der Meinung, dass Vögel (und auch andere Tiere), ihre Jungen nicht mehr annehmen, sobald "Menschengeruch" festgestellt wird.

In Spanien sind nicht die Kücken gestorben sie wurden aus dem e Nest gerettet ein fremder Storch hatte die Jungstörch angegriffen.Sie werden erst einmal gesundgepflegt

Tolle Organisation: Der Graustorch hatte sogar einen Haken dabei, um auch das entferntere Kücken näher zu holen. Ich finde es immer wieder lustig, wie Storchenkücken in eine völlige Akinese verfallen, wenn etwas geschieht, was sie noch nicht kennen. Danke für das Video und die Storchenbetreuung!
