How do you completely remove docker and portainer to reinstall it and start from fresh? I have Plex installed as well as transmission and radar, but for some reason now matter how I remove those container or rebuild them with newest images I have problems with them I cannot solve. I’d rather not reinstall omv because it works perfectly fine. On a rpi.
So to remove portainer, you can do this:
Login to your server as root and run these commands:
docker stop portainer
docker rm portainer
To remove Docker, you should be able to follow the directions here: askubuntu.com/a/1021506
@@DBTechYT I’ve removed portainer and docker from the GUI interface on omv and when I reinstalled portainer my containers still existed. Doing it through the command line does it remove this data and start fresh?
Portainer is just a container that resides on Docker. Portainer doesn't store containers. Deleting Portainer is just deleting Portainer. It has nothing to do with your other containers. You'll have to delete your other containers and their data if you want to start over.
Can you cover what to do when you get the error "Unable to locate /data/portainer.db on disk"?
At that point I think you're going to have to just reinstall Portainer. If there's no db then there's no way to recover.
Had the same problem running portainer on my Synology NAS. Fixed it by adding the complete path on the last command. In my case: docker run --rm -v /volume1/docker/portainer-ce:/data portainer/helper-reset-password

Unfortunately, this did not help. I tried following and when I try to enter docket container stop portainer, i get an error saying there is no container called portainer.... Is there anything else I can do to reset password?
Either type "docker container ls" to see what containers are running then use the right one
or
type "docker container stop porta" and press TAB (TAB autofills the name if it is unique).
Thanks, but I hope not to have to use this. Oh, If you are in the mood, I am looking to figure out best way to have docker / portainer in a 2 node setup. This way I can patch or take down 1 node for (Patching, upgrades....) while other node is still in use. Is this even possible?
Why have you not covered how to install and configure additional module needed and also why have you not posted commands need in the description? I am sorry to say but the vid it a complete waste of time in its current state. All what you are showing is what can be found on website of the reset password module and it is a one command which you did not even bother to paste in the description.
Based on the other comments and views and like/dislike ratio and all the other metrics available, I'm not sure what the issue you're having is. No one else has mentioned any of your complaints, so I'm thinking you may have missed something along the way. Best of luck.
You do not need to install anything to run the commands he shows, it was installed when you installed Portainer. The Github link confuses it a bit.
I had this error docker run --rm -v portainer_data:/data portainer/helper-reset-password

2024/06/26 16:02:07 Unable to open the database, err: timeout
Just tried this and I'm getting a permissions error but not sure how to resolve
docker run --rm -v portainer_data:/data portainer/helper-reset-password
docker: Got permission denied while trying to connect to the Docker daemon socket at unix:///var/run/docker.sock: Post "%2Fvar%2Frun%2Fdocker.sock/v1.24/containers/create": dial unix /var/run/docker.sock: connect: permission denied.
See 'docker run --help'.
That error message means you need to run the command with sudo in front of it:
sudo docker run --rm -v portainer_data:/data portainer/helper-reset-password
