So depressing. One of the first authors I read in my political awakening. He made us aware of what was possible and that we were indeed the 99%. Bullshit jobs was funny depressing and hopeful at the same time. He will be greatly missed.
Absolutely! 💚 I love Amy Goodman, I watch every day from the UK. David Graeber was a wonderful visionary and his death a tragic loss. He’ll be missed alright
RIP David. Debt, The Utopia of Rules, and Bull Shit Jobs are must reads for anyone who wants to be socially aware. His intellect will be sincerely missed. The World was better with him and now a little worse without him.
@Madasin !, man, I was right there with you from the first paragraph. But then you lost me. I thought you made a great point about the Graeber-Occupy clip. I agree that DN!, an important, independent, liberal-left TV/radio/podcast show can behave like gatekeepers, subtly repressing more radical voices to the left of their editorial position. But then you went off about magik and spice and whatnot; and you basically lost me at that point. And I bet most other readers, too. But, yeah, Democracy Now! can really disappoint sometimes.
I recently discovered Graeber while searching about alternative local currency. With the extensive interviews he did and the books he wrote, I and many other will come to know him better and in turn ourselves. He is sorely missed. And his spirit lives on, in and through us by our actions.
It's a great shame that mainstream media has nothing on Mr. Graeber's passing, given that he had significant and profound impact on the collective human consciousness. He will be sorely missed.
The Occupy movement will always be that defining moment in my life when I became politically active and truly aware of the greed and corruption in regards to American economic apparatus, at large. I might have never questioned the capitalist / oligarchical system we live in if it wasn't for that. RIP David.
@@Hughster49 Communism did't kill millions, just like Christianity didn't kill millions. People are of all kinds, some are power hungry, and you'll find them in all ideologies. What a tragedy. Brilliant thinker. He's changed the world even though most of the world doesn't realize it yet. Certainly has changed me. The opposite of tragedy is that we can read and re-read his writing, engage and live his good ideas.
May History remember him well. His logic and his empathy would end a lot of misery if the powers-that-be had the guts to put these ideas into practice.
@TheHomoludens Well, no arguments here. But before they were full-on criminals, they were just spineless wonders who couldn't say no to the money. No GUTS!
Gutted. A great mind lost, rest in peace. To any who haven't done so, his books should be read. They will make you think about our values and social practices like work ethics and state and corportate organisation in a more critical and open minded way in a way only an anthropologist could.
We need occupy wall street now more than ever, and more people like MR Graber. Debt enslavement needs to be outlawed. Poor people need to be empowered not put in financial bondage.
While David Graeber was a hugely effective advocate for the 99%, I think of him as in the .001% in the sense that he was that extremely rare person who could have done anything and chooses, sincerely, to try to make the world better. He was a revolutionary, intellectually fearless thinker. Those who care about the world as a whole have been greatly empowered by this man's work.
@@ArChi285 Yeah, they/it could be said.that..- We don't know yet!...so we do not need to speculate. I see under here that his wife said it was internal bleeding of some kind.
David was basically responsible for my moving from a young guy right-libertarianism, to left libertarianism, and eventually to being an anarchist. I was only at Occupy for one day, and it was half-extreme interest out of the solidarity I felt (first time this had happened to me), and out of needing to get pictures and talk to a few people there for my college newspaper. It took me several years after that to actually move to being a serious anti-capitalist, but Occupy and discovering David definitely put me on that path, and away from the absurdity of right-libertarianism. I really need to finally read his books. I’ve meant to for years, but you know how it goes. First Michael Brooks, now David Graeber... this year fucking sucks. RIP David🙏❤️🏴♾
Guy who dedicates his life exposing greed and corruption, dies young. Person dedicates themselves to greed and corruption and live a long life hurting others. I'll never understand this world. It would certainly seem like it's ruled by the worse humanity has to offer
When your done playing MONOPOLY, all the pieces are put back into the box! It's the well-being of one another, that's TRUELY of worth! Not something else!
He was a brilliant man. I’m sure he understood that debt is a form of slavery. If you cash a paycheck you are owned by someone. The fact that you can choose your own master makes you no less a slave. The 1 percent are the tyrants that stand against freedom of any kind. Even in these truly dangerous times, when simply going to the grocery store could be a death sentence, the masters are still cracking their whips. The masters are loosing money, so their slaves have to go back to work.

Occupy meant so much to me in my personal awakening: from the thrilling mission, the collective education and then the Bloomberg/NYPD authoritarian attacks that ultimately crushed us in the streets, but couldn't take from us the lessons learned while assured our movement grows on. Because Wall Street owns the mainstream just as they own the 2-faced American Business Party.
Why should they? - they aren't news, they are for-profit propaganda vehicles.

'Et dimitte nobis debita nostra,
