You are so right. The relief from pain makes having the ostomy worth it.

I think it's great how your parents and school had the ability to allow you to adjust in little steps and to process the changes in your life. Baby steps are the best way to recover from major traumas. 💗

Girl you are awesome. You are a born teacher. I don't have a ostomy but I have just been diagnosed with colitis and I don't know where that will lead. You are inspiring. Your friend Patricia

Thank you so much for this video. I woke up after being on a vent for 3+ weeks with an ileostomy. Needless to say I wasn't prepared for it. I appreciate you putting this topic out there. Right now I am still struggling with the idea of having this bag on me for the rest of my life and then I feel guilty because this surgery saved myself. Thanks again.

Maggie thank you. I will be going into surgery for a permanent colostomy (I have an ileostomy due to colon cancer). Watching your video has helped me be ok with all of my "feelings". God bless you ♡

I don’t have IBD - came across your videos when searching for something else, but I follow because you’re an inspiration for those of us who struggle with chronic health issues and I like being educated on what other people are going through medically so thank you for sharing your journey!

I've watched many of your videos & I must say they have helped me more then I ever dreamed that I even needed help, if that makes any sense! I had my surgery in 2011 & until this past year I really didn't want much to do with my ostomy. My husband took care of it & I was just fine with that. I don't know what happened but I just decided I WANTED to take over the care of my ostomy & all that it involved. I mean, hubby had thought me the how's & all that but I just didn't care before. I took over all aspects of care for my ostomy & I have to say I feel a sense of empowerment! I know that must sound crazy but it's just how I feel. LOL I'm actually much happier & more content with the whole thing. I don't know, maybe I just needed that time to really except & come to terms with the whole thing? I only have one thing left to add. Thank you so much Maggie for the videos you post here. I don't know if you really realize just how much you have & continue to help others, especially ME!! I will continue watching EVERYTHING you post. You are truly a wonderful & special person!! God Bless Maggie....

great video as always. for me my mom was definitely on the side of suck it up and get over it. until I got my ostomy I had never really understood what they are. after I got my ostomy I definitely went through a deep depression. it's been 7 years since the surgery and I'm just starting to learn to be OK with it.

Hi Maggie. I just wanted to say that watching your videos really really helped me get through those first few months of having my ostomy. I even made my own videos and shouted you out! :) Anyway, I'm almost 4 years in now and I am so much happier and healthier. I appreciate all that you do. Really!

Hi Maggie ! Watching this video made me feel emotional, just like the title. i had an ostomy for about 2 years. by the time, it took me a while to adjust to the new circumstances, finding the right supplies etc. but just like you said, you have to get through it. it is ok to feel sorry for yourself sometimes, but it shouldn't keep you from doing "normal" things. everything is possible with an ostomy ! i am very thankful for the time having one (i know that sounds weird^^) because not only my health condition improved so much, but i also made a lot of new friends and learned about myself. even though my ostomy got removed last year, i am still "with you guys" and always interested in hearing about it. the more we talk about topics like this, the more "normal" they'll get. it is nothing anyone should be ashamed of. thank you so much for making these videos ! lots of love from germany !

  • @kateellenberry
    @kateellenberry 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think a bit of both :) it's ok to have days where we feel sorry for ourselves, but majority of the time I try to get on with it!! I too felt lots better after looking online & on TH-cam :) I think normalising it and talking about it lots makes it easier (rather than hiding it). Helping others is therapeutic too xx

Hmm, healing really comes in the form of both the physical and emotional. The latter cannot be neglected, or emphasized enough after going through some serious trauma.

And I'm trying to look for people who are going through same things as me. And thank you for sharing your experiences with me

Maggie another great video, very informative and letting people know how it is living with an ostomy. I got my ileal conduit urostomy in 2009 and when I got home from the hospital I was overwhelmed and didn't think I would ever be able to adjust to this drastic change in life. I have had many problems with my ostomy, four post incisional hernias, and two abdominal surgeries to remove a large cyst in my abdomen and to remove the infected mesh holding things together. Now I have to get a total revision of the ileal conduit and I dread having to go through this again. To add insult to injury I also have a bad inguinal hernia which is very painful. I just want to get this surgery over with and try to get well again.

I got my ostomy at age 12 and still have it at 24. can't ever be reversed because I got 3 fistulas that ate away my sacral bone and through my intestinal wall. I have crohns and had toxic megacolon. and it was so hard adjusting to having an ostomy. i was angry, sad, overwhelmed and it took me about a year to fully accept the disease and ostomy. I also played 5 different sports. once you get used to it, you really can do whatever you want. there are not many things I can't do with my ostomy now. I've had 10 surgeries and many more to come but my ostomy isn't going anywhere haha.

Ashley West Our stories are similar except you're so young! I was dx with UC 4 yrs ago at the age of 36. I ended up with toxic megacolon 1 month after my dx, had my colon removed, and was on the ventilator by the next month with retroperitoneal sepsis. At one time, I had 6 fistulas, including a rectal vaginal fistula. They were so painful that I couldn't walk for a year. I'm almost to 10 surgeries, with my current ostomy being my 3rd, and 3 wound vacs to go with each of them. I lost my career as an ICU nurse, missed out on my kids lives, and my husband left me. I almost lost my house and my car. At 39, my children and I had to move in with my mom for 11 months. I can only lay on my back when I sleep. I think that's one of the hardest things I've dealt with so far, besides losing my career. I try to stay upbeat. If it weren't for my kids, by choice I wouldn't be here. I have a hernia now, and part of my small bowel is slightly kinked, but maybe after I get that resolved I can start doing things. I've missed vacations and family reunions. I'll be glad to get back to living. Good luck to you! Glad you have a good outlook about life!

Heyy! I'm new to the ostomy world. It's been a couple months now and feeling pretty hopeless. I haven't been able to find products that work. The other day I had to change 5 bags from 4AM-9AM. I would love to chat with you and pick your brain about products.

I have a question...I don't know if you will have the answer, but maybe you've heard from male patients about dealing with this...what is the best way to secure your bag in um...intimate moments...for a male...I guess it would be similar for a female too tho.

Hello I had my ilostomy when I was 21. I have had it now for 33 years I glad I had it done but I hat having one. I still have trouble with it. I had no for help for how I felt. I learnt that you put about the bag on date websites straight away less hurtful. Hard to go out because I cannot stop sound or bag fulling up. Harder with children because of bag because you can not hold them or have them sit on the side of bag. Because I can not wear a seatbelt I have to tell them about the bag more often. Help here in Perth Australia for most of the time not there or you find out on line. Still have no one really to talk about this. Alone a lot. I sell get piss of with bag wish I did not have bag some time. Hard finding a lady. Fell down a lot. A now mum has Alzheimer’s that’s putting a lot more stress on to every day as well. Without Christ I would not be here. I wished I had someone to take to on phone or face to face.

Sorry didn’t finish my reply. But I was in the hospital and was given very little help in over 6 weeks with expectations once home. I knew what I knew in care by being a nurse. And home health assisted me by signing me up for a to go bag with samples through a company. All things have been trial and error. And without people like you I would not know what I was doing most of the time or what to expect. Thank you so much

Since I've got my Ostomie my husband and I have not been intimate. It's been three years now. It makes me very sad because I miss it. He is wonderful with me, so helpful and understanding, but physically he's just distant. Hugging yes, sex no.

Yes, it does, it's been even longer over here. My advice if at all possible... don't let your mate Do it ALL for you, it really ruins the Intimacy between you 2. Also hope they don't have to do for any other females in Y'alls life because that is when you start to lose it,& it's like the Bad Joke where the woman gets to the point of standing naked in front of the TV & the Husband asks her to move because he can't see the Ball Game... My guy helped deliver his G-Kid with his Ex & his Daughter's M-inlaw because New Daddy is & was useless, but we won't go there, but that was the start of the loss of our sex life. Still, a lot of Love & caring, but my standing in front of the TV hasn't fixed anything.
