I'm glad I could enlighten you. Sim racing really fuelled my love of sportscar racing because they're probably the best cars to race on sims. Thanks for tuning in!
I’m in my 40’s and only now I’m getting into racing. This video was very informative and I think that GT is my favorite type of racing, because of the variety of cars and classes involved, which makes it all very interesting.
Just 2 years ago I had no idea what the differences in GT cars was. But when I started watching IMSA and WEC in 2018, I started to understand and learn more along with what type of car a manufacturer ran in what category of racing.
Excellent video - details about different GT regs are quite sparse online, so this is very useful indeed. It’s a shame that there’s so much confusion surrounding GT classes compared to LMPs, since I personally think that they’re substantially more appealing to the average viewer. As GTE/LM begins to die, I hope a more understandable hierarchy gets established in the future.
Well they solved that problem by coming up with the LMDh and Hypercar classes. Makes that whole GTE GTLM GT2 GT3 thing look simple in comparison. I follow endurance racing and still don‘t get what the difference is.
In my opinion GT3 is an extremely boring class and shouldn’t be drawn into anything. The German DTM got completely screwed up now it’s only another GT3 race. The 90s DTM was peak performance, but after that it at least was it’s own class with it’s own cars. Group C and GT1 was absolutely amazing in my opinion. Those cars where such great examples of excellent engineering, it’s a huge shame there’s nothing like this anymore. Racecars that have to have a few legendary roadgoing equivalents! Those where the days!
@@rolux4853 The reason that all of the regulation sets that you mentioned are no longer around (Old DTM Class 1, modern Class 1 within DTM (Super GT GT500 still uses it), Group C, and both versions of GT1) is the same - cost. GT3 and Hypercar/GTP (LMH/LMDh) are incredibly popular regulation sets precisely because elements like BoP and the LMDh spending cap mean that teams can guarantee that they can make a competitive car that won’t break the bank. It may seem boring to those who grew up with the monsters of the past, but if it works and keeps motorsport out of the boom-bust cycles of the past, then I say all the more power to them!

Super informative video! I’ve been messing around with GT cars in Assetto Corsa, trying to figure out the differences in the classes of GT cars to find out which one I liked more, and this answered pretty much every question I had about them.
Hi and thanks fir your complete movie. Your details was really well and complete, but I'm really confused to understand them. In essence, I was little bored at the middle of your movie, because of the huge details you mentioned. I was minding of illustrating and writting what you say in your movie in order to better comprehension. In general, that was helpful.
Manufactures that have race cars in the GTE, GT3, and GT4 categories. BMW M8 GTE, M4 GT3, M4 GT4 Porsche 911 RSR, 911 GT3 R, 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport Aston Martin Vantage GTE, Vantage GT3, Vantage GT4 Chevrolet C8.R, C8.R GT3, Camaro GT4.R
They are surprisingly close tho considering LMP1 cars are about 1-2 second faster per lap than Indy, while GT500 are about 3 seconds slower, so the difference is quite small
Great video! I would like to add, that the DTM has another great series going up against it called GT Masters. Lots of big Pro driver names compete or competed in it. As the DTM switched to the GT3 class there is now a little war for relevance in the german space. 24hrs of the Nürburgring is also a special endurance event with a bigger GT3 line up. This year a couple of GT2 KTMs were present.
Unfortunately, DTM lost all its charm when they started to build cars that have no correlation with their homologated counterpart. The chassis is built from scratch, the engine is different. There was a time where Alfa, BMW and Mercedes built those racecars from the Homologated Chassis and engines. The race used to be animated, full of soul and power. Now it has lost a bit of charm.
The GT500 cars remind me a lot of the American SCCA Trans Am series' TA and TA2 spec cars. Those are also silhouette cars, but they're based on muscle cars and have Chevrolet LS V8 engines. I believe they're mother chassis cars. The series started with race-spec road going muscle cars on road courses, but now they're far different of course.
GT500 doesn't use the Mother Chassis, only the GT300 class do. Besides, whereas the MC cars use an unbranded Nissan V8, GT500 mandates only turbo 4-pots made by the manufacturers of the participating cars.
Trans-Am doesn't use production engines, they use old spec NASCAR engines. The Mother Chassis is bespoke for Super GT, although Trans-Am would probably try to fit you into a class if you built a car around one. Trans-Am has it's own bespoke chassis, with different rules between TA1 and TA2.

If it were up to me i'd scrap all GT classes apart from GT4 GT3 and a revised GT2 where the cars are actually faster than GT3. I would also restrict GT4 to using road type semi slicks only so that they powerslide a bit more. Drivers would rise from GT4 to GT2 the same way formula works.
ACO and IMSA having their own brand of GT classes go boom and then bust just proved Stephane Ratel right and those two governing bodies need to apologise to him, as well as work with him to establish a universally accepted hierarchy. Sportscar racing is already difficult to consume as a spectator sport without those two doing their own things.
Yeah it has gotten a bit messy but it looks like GT3 is essentially about to become the primary form of top flight GT racing across the board. And yeah collaboration is extremely important and has quite a few benefits to say the least. Just look at what IMSA and the WEC have already been able to accomplish with the top prototype classes. Whooa no wonder.., for this whole time i thought the smaller the number the higher the tier (well it used to be but not now hahah). So it's more less like a rally group. Group A isn't necessarily higher tier than group B, then group N and bla bla. Thx for the elaboration!!
I mean, generally speaking, it was lower the number the higher the tier up until GT2 was reintroduced. GT500 was kind of its own class. Yeah, this whole thing got really confusing. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of classes just get slashed eventually and we end up with an easier to understand hierarchy. But until that day comes, here ya go. Thanks for tuning in!
To clarify for those who don't know:- GT means Grand Tourer, a category of luxury brand performance sports cars built for racing while also being street legal. From my perspective, the reason why auto manufacturers and amateur teams attend racing events is because - it is one big advertisement of their products; a demonstration of engineering and performance ; basically saying---, "look how good our car technology is, buy from us." I've grown up watching different motorsports from the early 2000s and played many racing video games. So I have some understanding.
I'm late to this video, but I have to give high praise for it. Your narrating style and speech are excellent! In a sea of upspeak and "youtube guy voice", you stand out with tone variation and great modulation. Also, your writing is similar to Top Gear, especially the "GT1 no longer exists and is irrelevant... so we're off to a good start." I could hear Jeremy Clarkson saying it during one of his segments. On top of the delivery, this video is crammed with information without being too dense. Other car channels could take notes!
The attention to detail in this comment actually means quite a lot to me. Clarkson has always been a significant influence of mine when it comes to presenting. I'm glad the information was also useful. Thank you so much for tuning in and leaving this comment and I hope to see you back here in the future.
Thanks for the video, but wouldn't mind seeing a visual of the gt branches. Like an evolution chart with lines going everywhere it branches off. Also saying it's a few seconds shorter doesn't really say much to me perhaps saying some top speeds of the different categories would have been helpful
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I should explain that most publications will use lap times when pointing out the differences in performance between these classes as top speed is quite often meaningless in circuit racing. Lap time is therefore the best speed indicator. It should also be noted that even GT cars in the same class have different top speeds which will also most likely vary due to balance of performance. Anyway, I hope this video was helpful. Thanks for tuning in!

The one thing I don't get: How is having less downforce easier? Especially with more power. Seems like you end up slower and with harder and earlier break points and a lot more things to screw up in cornering.
Here’s my problem. I’d like to do 24hr endurance, with similar engine rules as Le Mans, but I want to be able to do more than 3 modifications at the end of the season in preparation for the next season. WEC says only 3 mods each season, which has nothing to do with the budget, my 3 mods could cost a grand total of $15, and the wec still wouldn’t let me do a fourth or fifth. I find that to be highly offensive
Can you make a video explaining ALL the different GT3 series, I’m confused about GT World challenge vs DTM vs GTD/Pro vs GT3LM ETC. Can a driver only race in one series at a time or can he/she race in 2 or more a year.

The attention to detail in this comment actually means quite a lot to me. Clarkson has always been a significant influence of mine when it comes to presenting. I'm glad the information was also useful. Thank you so much for tuning in and leaving this comment and I hope to see you back here in the future.
I was looking for a guide video about GT cars. What are gt cars? Which ones are best? That sorta thing. Guess this video is the closest I’m gonna get
Thanks for the video, but wouldn't mind seeing a visual of the gt branches.
How Corvette seems to be completely omitted from your GT analysis I will defer to your youth. Very new you are and the young so go forth and learn.
That was super helpful thanks
Me: “No way this guy can cover GT in 12 minutes”
Well you did and earned a sub
Thank you very much and welcome along for the ride!
Thank you for sharing
7:29 when the game's so good the picture goes for a real one
Thank you Friend,
I'm a STUDENT @ LBCC AUTO TECHNOLOGY CLUB and was at the LONG BEACH GRAND PRIX YES5ERDAY. If you are here stop by our display.
I chose GT AMERICA RACING to do my Report on and found your video very helpful as this is new to me.
Thanks

Thank you! I appreciate that. Thanks for tuning in.
Thank you for explaining this insanity. 😆
Gtb Gtt Gte Ppt, I’m going to need pen and paper
Need a 2023 update. Imsa and japan gt look to have changed?!
I think this is a good overview, but I wished you also covered Trans Am racing as it's an American semi-pro gt racing series with multiple classes.
Thanks for posting this excellent video. I simultaneously feel more informed and confused 😉
I'm glad you enjoyed it. And I think you and virtually every sportscar fan known to man shares your latter sentiment. Thanks for tuning in!
GT1 Racing is coming back tho
really? How?
Fantastic video fella
Appreciate it mate. Thanks for tuning in!

Very well done!
Really like ur content, u should put videos up more often!
Thank you! Yeah it's just a matter of how busy I am. With more time I'd be uploading more regularly. Thanks for turning in!

Subbed, you should make more videos, you are a great presenter
edit; this was insanely informative, thank you man : D
Clear as mud
It was more complicated than I thought 😂😂😂
Pretty good guide if you already know most stuff already. Got me more confused
Great video, really want someone to explain all of the Gts series!
Good explanation!
Maybe one day. Thanks for tuning in! I appreciate it.
Can a driver only race in one series at a time or can he/she race in 2 or more a year.
lets make it easier for everyone, gttt is gt 1, and was gt 0, but before that it became gt super with a gt 5 on the front, but after that gt2 was introduced to improve the costs of gt1 and so on and on
simple
Really good video! This was very informative. I bet if I took a drink every time you said GT I'd die xD.
