I think Jennie's right. Having followed YG artists since 2012 (beginning with Lee Hi), I could see early on that YG had a hierarchy of priorities. Female solo artists got the LOWEST priority. Girl groups got the second LOWEST priority. Boy groups got the highest priority. I remember how both iKon and Winner got a year's worth of expensively produced PRE-DEBUT promotions in the form of weekly TV shows (W.I.N., Mix & Match, etc.). (Often, the only chance you could get to see a female solo artist like Lee Hi...was when YG was using her in the shows for the boy trainees to help promote them. ) The boys were all famous celebrities before they even debuted.
Blackpink got almost ZERO pre-debut promotions and nobody even knew who Lisa and Rosie were until a week or so before they debuted. After they debuted they only got a few songs in their debut year because YG was still focused on the boy groups plus focused on new reality TV shows starring Yang Hyun Suk...and boy trainees...shows such as Mix9 (which flopped so hard).
Jennie's right if she's saying that YG never expected Blackpink to become as big as they became. They got a tiny fraction of the investment that went into the boy groups...but ended up becoming the most globally successful group in YG's history. I love Babymonster too and support them fully. That said, the fact that Babymonster, as a girl-group, is getting really decent promotions and a great debut year that will include a full album...is very much thanks to Blackpink paving the way. If Blackpink had not been so successful, Babymonster too would be experiencing the low priority status that all previous girl groups and female artists at YG received.

@@zoi7582 None of those things can be called proper pre-debut group promotions and were nothing even close to the pre-debut weekly TV shows that the boy groups got. (W.I.N., Mix & Match, plus full group appearances at YG Family concerts.). All of YG's top artists were brought in to promote those shows and promote the new boy groups. The fact that nobody even knew who Lisa and Rosie were until the group actually debuted is all the proof you need that they got zero pre-debut group promotions.
Yes, Jisoo and Jennie were individually promoted slightly before debut. Jisoo mostly in acting (appearing in some music videos, with no lines). Jennie got the most pre-debut attention, featuring in 2 or 3 GD songs and 1 Lee Hi song. Rosie featured in 1 GD song, but YG wouldn't even name her. She was credited with a question mark (?). (And who can even explain why Jennie was credited by name for every pre-debut thing she did, and even appeared on national TV singing with GD, but Rosie was only listed as a question mark?)
The quote about YHS saying the "aim was to be the biggest GG" doesn't really count for much. It's the kind of thing you'd expect him to say in that kind of interview, regardless of what really happened when the group was launched. Would you expect him to say: "We viewed them as just a low-priority girl group. We never expected them to be this successful."
Just go back to 2015, 2016 and see what was really happening. I think you missed the point of what I was saying. I was comparing the amount of investment before debut and in the year or so after debut. I don't think you can with a straight face claim that the investment in BP was even close to the investment in the boy groups. ALL of the boy group members were famous celebrities for many months BEFORE they even debuted. Ikon members were all celebrities for more than a year before they debuted. People just sort of knew who Jennie was. People were vaguely aware of Jisoo as a "trainee" who appeared in some MVs. Nobody even knew the other two members until the group actually debuted. Just before debut, they were announced and some photos of them were shown.

Jennie got pre-debut promotions..as Jennie. Jisoo acted in some commercials and MVs. Imagine if that's what happened with Babymonster...and two weeks before the group debut, the public only knew about Ahyeon and Rora because Ahyeon did several collabs with YG artists and Rora acted in some MVs and commercials. Would you call that proper pre-debut promotions for the GROUP?
With the difference of content available for babymonster as compared to bp, i was envious coz i wanted that from bp but some of them are most of the time to be paid shows and the ones on yt are soooooo limited. Even variety shows are sooooo exclusive when it comes to bp. Now that they're somewhat in a hiatus as a group just makes it worse for me. Im happy with their individual work that is yet to come out but i really want to see them together....and not for concerts like seriously 😂

I dont think everything was bad that YG did, the problems they had with Big-Bang members left massive scars and they were feared that the same can repeat one day. But they made Blackpink popular and after the foundation was set, the 4 girls proved themselve in evaluationg and improving day by day. They worked hard and got more popular on their own... Yes of course YG could have gave them more comebacks and better promotion, but Blackpink had so much range that it wasnt nessecary and the seccond thing is, YG is not a fan of the korean Music award shows and how everything is handled there.

And you know it must bother the BP members a bit to see that Babymonster is already getting a full album (on top of a mini album) in their first year...on top of having gotten extensive pre-debut promotions that previously were only given to boy groups at YG. When Blackpink debuted, nobody even knew who Rosie and Lisa were. They got almost ZERO pre-debut promotions. I'm sure the BP members are happy for the Babymonster members. As a blink...and a megamon (Babymonster fan), I'm thankful to BP for finally waking YG up to the potential of girl groups and the need to invest in them just as much as in boy groups.
