    I added a remote control to my Minisforum mini pc by adding a "remote control power strip". Set the Bios (hit delete button during boot up), change the setting to enable pc to start after power outage. Then simply turn the pc off normally but after pc shuts down power off the power strip. When you turn power strip back on PC boots up automatically. Simple, cheap and effective!

    is there a similar solution for laptops?

  • @nological2282
    @nological2282 ปีที่แล้ว

    The problem, and a big one for me is that WOL (wake on lan) doesn’t allow you to fully shutdown your pc (shut down all running applications and open software) to some of you you are probably like wait.. my computer doesn’t do that when I press the power button. Yes because it is a setting you have to enable in windows. If you don’t have it enabled then all your apps and open programs will stay open the next time you turn on your computer. If you have it enabled it is basically restarting your computer every time you start it up. This however as I stated is not supported with WOL therefore this is a great alternative because it gets into the system and actually enables it to fully shut down.

      @kf160k160 ปีที่แล้ว

      I assume what you refer "hard" shutdown is instant power shutdown not by Windows and yes, that is bad. Answer for your first question is no, the hard shutdown only can be performed if you press and hold power button for a few seconds. One short press button will have to depend on your Windows power button setting. Default is set to sleep mode but you can change to power off by Windows.

    Still trying to find a good alternative solution to this - not an app/wifi controlled one either, unlocking phone/starting an app is more steps than I want to start a HTPC from the couch.
    Did try this ES02 a few years ago, but remote chewed through batteries insanely fast. Using it daily to switch on a HTPC lasted maybe a bit over a month if lucky.
    There was also the annoyance of having to keep a cache of cr2032 batteries on hand (expired minefield to buy online, so a trip to actual brick and mortar shops!), then being a coin battery it has to have a screw protecting removal, so waste time looking for that small head screwdriver in that drawer somewhere too. Right there you're wasting more time would have been just getting up off the couch to switch the PC on. The solution is just as bad as the problem.
    Would love for someone to prove me wrong here, say they get a good 6-12 months battery life out of the remote and that my remotes battery life may just be an anomaly..

    I bought this and am able to turn pc on and restart and off with the normal pc buttons, and the same with the remote except I can't turn my pc on with it...I'm guessing this is because the receiver doesn't have power when the pc is off...anyway to make it work as this is the main reason I bought it

      No. Although, you can find little PCIe controllers on Newegg that allow you to boot up your computer just by talking to Google Assistant/Alexa

    The key now is not to lose that tiny remote. LOL or you will end up having to dismantle PC to start it hehe ... but a huge plus is if you keep remote as keychain on you it will be tough to temper with your PC

      My guess is bios settings. Some PC's have a bios setting that enables/disables usb power when powered down. This would explain why it only works when your pc is on.

      In windows WoL doesn't always work well. Also, for those with a HTPC we like to shut them fully down ever now and then to flush the ram out and any crud built up in temp files and registry. No this is beautiful.
