I’m 21 and fascinated with comedy and broadcasting. Watching Willard Scott, he absolutely seems like one of America’s favorite personalities and it’s fun to see the classic personalities in their stride. Thanks for the opportunity, Don!
RIP Willard. Great to see Dave guest-hosting the Tonight Show at the beginning. I was young but I first became a fan of Dave when he started guest-hosting in the late 70's. I remember being excited when he got the (short-lived) morning show in 1980.
Letterman's sort-of-prediction that George Freestone could live into the new millennium proved right - Mr. Freestone passed away at the age of 104 in early 2003, according to the New York Times. A well, long lived life indeed💜💜💜💜.
wow..you're still the fasted obit video collection guy in the biz, DG. And tho he didnt make it to the Smucker's 100 club, he left his mark as 1 of last of the OG 'Regis-esque' broadcaters. RIP Willard
I was hoping you'd have the "David Letterhead" clip, and as always, you didn't disappoint. Great work as always. Don! Willard was an American original.
Always. Find and read Ned Wynn's We Will Aways Live In Beverly Hills. She's in it. A very special mad amazing read. Maybe ebay. I have bought extra copies and given it to friends.
When Letterman had his Summer morning show in 1980 I made a cartton of Dave and Willard Scott and gave it to a production addistant. Before the show started Dave came out with the cartoon and said, "Hey, who made this?" I raised my hand and Dave said "Thanks."
I believe Dave was fascinated and amused by the fact that a Willard Scott could be a household name. Homely looking, laughed at his own lame jokes, delivered the weather like he was reading the phone book, yet famous. Yes, he was cheerful and warm. But his very ordinariness was actually the secret of his success, as far as I can tell. It’s a facet of adult life that seems absurd when you’re a boy and you assume you have to be great at something to be famous. I think Dave never got over that boyish assumption, thus he often made joking references to the Willard Scotts of the world, that most people didn’t get. I think I get it, Dave.
Hey Don, is that Teri Garr on the couch next to Willard in the first segment? I’m pretty sure it was. Any chance you could post the clip of Dave’s TS interview with her?
Argh. You’re right. I had flipped the numbers in the description, then relied on that date when inserting the pre-video text. I just corrected it in the description. Thanks for catching it, and thanks for keeping me honest. Appreciated. I also neglected to add a couple cameos from Dave’s 1980 morning show. Argh again.
Wow. That last sequence with100 year old George Freestone is indeed a Willard sequence., so hang in. At the end of it Dave asks him if he still drives..."Yes". Dave goes.."Whoa, Nellie!" I wanted George to say, "Nellie's dead, I drive a a Maserati!"
This is so great. Don if you could find any old clips of Dave doing that thing during the monologue where he goes to Paul and says "Doc's here? Doc's NOT here. Is Doc here tonight? Doc's here? Doc's NOT here.," I would be eternally grateful,
In the 1988 clip - "Dave's Carpet Samples", as David's on his way back towards the staircase, he leans towards the band and says "Don't worry Branford, this won't cut into your time." Was he talking to Branford Marsalis, sitting in with the band? A little irony there, considering the gig he got a few years later.
Oh wow didnt know that the orignal ronald mcdonald, should name a burger after him, the willard scott burger, or should be part of a museum, i recently went to the museum in downey cali, and nothing about him, but should be thanks i never knew, RIP Willard Scott. Did David Letterman ever interview Roy Kroc or the brothers that made mcds?

You'll be lucky to see 22! Love that quote.
Growing up, we liked Willard Scott and his giant jelly jar of old people
A very well-done tribute as usual, Don. We all owe you big time!
I have a new Patreon account. :)

That last clip with George Freestone was awesome!
You could see the happiness on his face when Willard was talking to him
That was so sweet, his thrill with the attention from Willard and Dave
And George lived to be 104! Amazing!
RIP Willard Scott (March 7, 1934 - September 4, 2021)
He made us laugh, cry ,wonder. He was a beautiful human being. May he Rest In Peace… We love you brother. thank you for being you….
This made for great tv. Nothing like it now.

Saved me a Google. Great to hear.
Great collection. Thanks for putting that together.
Thanks for collecting all this stuff and posting it!!!

Yeah, what about that rumor of him beating a cue-card boy to death with his bare hands? :)
@@dhpbear2 Seriously?? :-O
Cool to see Teri Garr on the first 1981 clip with Letterman, before her first appearance on his NBC Late Show

Great job as always 👍 Very timely
I loved "vengeful" Willard
"You think you pulled a fast one on the National Broadcasting Co., huh?"
This is how I get my news now, from Don Giller Letterman collections.
I know, right? I see this pop up in my TH-cam feed and think, "Oh shit, Willard Scott must have died."
That first bit's hilarious. I was recording bits off-the-air every night back in 1981. The VCR timer must've failed me on June 4! :)
RIP Willard. He was just plain nuts.
Give Godspeed Willard Scott:)

What a wonderful man!
Great job.
Great upload. Rip.
RIP Willard.

Can’t happen, sorry. If I could, it would have been included in the Garr compilation.
Yep, it’s Teri Garr and Bert Convy.
We'll wish you Happy Centenary in 2034. In the meanwhile, RIP.
R.I.P. Willard Scott
0:29 LOL, he did Johnny's Carnac the Magnificent trip-on-the-stage thing. Definitely a nod to Carson.
Great job. I believe #14 was July 31st, not 13th (according to IMDb, plus Freestone says his birthday was two days ago and he was born July 28, 1898)

Don is scrambling right now for Norma McDonald footage!
His complete compilation uploaded November 2019 in five parts.
How many times did that "If x and x got into a fight, who would win?" joke letter happen on that show? That's like, the 3rd instance that I know of.

He was. Which is also why the band played “Message in a Bottle” in honor of Branford touring with Sting.
You left out the Late Night Bookmobile, where they had a Willard Scott book entitled "500 Apartments That Will Soon Be Vacant."
I left out a number of cheap jokes.
yep, that’s teri garr next to willard
worlds oldest Boy Scout steals it

Not in this collection.

Yeah it looks like Teri Garr and Bert Convy. Seems like Dave has always been interviewing Teri.
