playing for a year and now i get it .i have all 5 pentatonic scale's all down pat . and now this . man does it help me now big time ..now its time to cut lose . thank you very much .
i just stumbled across the this video for the second time. The first time was 6 or so months ago and its changed the way i approach the fretboard completely - and broke me out of vertical scale thinking. in parallel to learning scale positions, this is a must do exercise. -print an image of your desired scale across whole fretboard -grab highlighter -portion it out root to 7 root to 7 as many ways as you like -stick it on your music stand -play play play -the patterns will begin to ingrain faster than scale memorization will ever take hold alone also: "lets start with the major scale because once you know this pattern you'll automatically know its 6 additional modes" - GENIUS (and you'll also know the Minor Scale...) print em off and look really hard at them all if that doesn't click. The Major scale, Minor scale, and 6 modes of each are just the exact same pattern slid to a different place on the fretboard. if you master the Major and can move it around - you know all the rest. please keep making these!

Having a visual diagram to watch makes all the difference when learning guitar. It's much easier than watching someone demonstrate it on a guitar. I'm so glad I found you, you're easily the best instructor I've tried to learn from!

This really identified my weak spot. I know all the pentatonic positions backwards and forwards, and all the arpeggio scales, but I have never focused on how to connect them over large areas of the neck. Now I get it. A thousand thanks! I have subscribed.
Diagrams are not that easy to read for some of us as we all learn in different ways. I prefer seeing actual players alongside the diagrams to give a better visual reference from a personal point of view. maybe others are the same?

Great lesson! I had half stumbled on an idea like this but this makes it more understandable and graspable. I've been trying to spice up my scales and this will do nicely.

Here's 2 cents from an ear player........ learn the pattern. Always start looking at the 12th fret as that's a great lead place to start. Find 'the box' or the pattern that associates itself with all the notes of the scale around the 12th. DO NOT IGNORE the way that this scale sounds. With time you will be able to correctly play through just by listening to where the intervals are and knowing if they should be half or whole steps from where you are. this can help you build 'relative pitch'. After you figure out some licks within the 12th fret area, continue using your ear to figure out and play the scale across the neck. If you have half an ear you will know what the correct notes are for the scale. Play the scale up and down until your sick of it and can play it fast. Then when it's embedded in your head, fond the rest of it across the neck. Remember that a scale is NOT all the dots you see right now...it's only 7 of them. The rest are repeats. Now start learning the theory that associates this scale with the chords behind it. Doors start to open.

C'mon, guys and gals - reach into your wallets/purses and support this man's work! Mr Fretjam sure knows his stuff; I'm currently working on his Arpeggio lessons and they are SUPERB. Beginners could really benefit from studying Arpeggios in order to become better intermediate players, IMHO. Learning cool Blues licks (or Metal or Jazz licks etc) is fine but if you're serious about becoming a player then you need to learn practical theory and how it relates to making music and FretJam really does have an authoritative handle on that, without a doubt. Thank you!
Once again a great video lesson! You have a great way of teaching, you should seriously consider sorting out your videos on order of difficulty with a playlist (so a complete beginner could progress on his own, but still learn thing correctly!). Also you do something that I really appreciate, you give pivot point examples so you can relate your ideas to, and you also teach a general approach in order to play in other roots, so one can use the patterns/examples thoroughly through the neck! (My first musical "click" was when I discovered that the scale patterns were interchangeable/movable/etc..., after learning the C Major scale, learning the G Major, etc... scales seemed impossible, being self taught, I wish I had a teacher like you! If you decide to write your own guitar book, with these videos on a separate DVD/CD whatever, I believe it would sell really fast :D (In a world of digital formats, I still prefer studying using paper). Where can I donate?

There is however more structure on the site itself (although still not as much as I'd like). Great Video clip! Sorry for the intrusion, I would appreciate your initial thoughts. Have you heard about - Riddleagan Blossoming Solo Remedy (search on google)? It is a great one of a kind product for mastering guitar scales without the normal expense. Ive heard some decent things about it and my close friend Aubrey at very last got amazing results with it.

I just figured out directional picking and yngwie malmsteens stile of sequencing but one question remained how to navigate across all 5boxed shaped positions of what ever parent scale I chose thanks to this video I have a better method thanks! :)
Notice something chart @0.13 minutes : as you progress from root 1 and stop at 3 you have 2 possible paths the linear option or down option under the root 1 number 4 is almost always there also pattern repeat it self every 1 thank you :) .
… fret jam First off I applaud you in these presentations that you so skillfully display … However, My reply was not about the scales it was about the cadence in which the graphics display in time per note on the screen, as it appears to be off somewhat at times so we suggested that having the no.-1 position light up in a different color from all the other notes regardless the scale would be helpful to folks that are watching and no doubt have played scales for years like myself but no doubt as well for those wanting to learn a faster way to do just that as you attempt to do in this presentation. No.1 position is always the "go to or go to home" position that allows one to ascend up or down as needed. Hope this helps ….
