  • The story of William Friese-Greene, a British inventor who (this film would have you think) made the first movie camera.
Now old, ill, poor, and largely forgotten, William Freise-Greene was once very different. As young and handsome William Green he changed his name to include his first wife's so that it sounded more impressive for the photographic portrait work he was so good at. But he was also an inventor and his search for a way to project moving pictures became an obsession that ultimately changed the life of all those he loved.

Olivier's response...the look of wonder...such control and yet so innocent....and those eyes, that slow gulp....pure pantomime perfection.

Olivier, who played the cop, often admitted he was overly theatrical in films, but not here; Robert Donat gets the impulsive character, while Olivier is VERY restrained. The scene is incredibly effective as a result.

Lovely scene. Starts off hilariously with Olivier thinking Donat has knocked someone off, reaching nervously for his truncheon and goes straight to being incredulous at the invention to being moved by how overcome Donat is by his success.

It's thanks to people like Friese-Greene that we have such wonderful picture quality in modern cameras and mobile phones these days. Such a talented man. 😃

Robert Donat's performance was perfect. I love movies, I love technology and I love (not matter how historically inaccurate) this film. The policeman was Sir Lawrence Olivier BTW.

This is my favorite part of the movie, imagine running down the street to tell someone about your invention and the only one you find is a policeman. I think Surendra Verma described his part in her book more deeply than the other inventors and scientists she mentioned.

Have you ever seen the movie Hugo? In that movie a small boy discovers an invention and he too ends up running afoul of the law. The movie is fiction, but a nice movie nonetheless.

Mmm..Eric, then I guess you did the right thing by posting. Try posting in "Space" community.
I had a friend that used to send his work to Space.com and they would sometimes select some of it, release and talk about his work in their website. Not sure if this helps.

According to a new study of the late-1890s 'Brighton School' of cinema pioneers, who were contemporary with the Lumieres, something like this really happened to Robert Paul. He gave out 'whoops of joy' when his projector began to work, arousing a passing police patrolman. Never mind, it's a great scene.
Although any bobby in Leeds could have been pulled in to watch the movie shot in a back garden by Louis Le Prince about three years earlier...

How far we have come. If I were to go back to that time and tell someone that with a device that fits in my hand, I could: Buy something and pay for it, talk to someone halfway around the world (audio and even video (Facetime)) Create movies / videos with sound and many other tasks I would have probably been committed.
