I've been using toothpicks as dowels to hold and align tops for gluing. I just put them in locations that will be milled out later, like the neck pocket or the pickup locations. This keeps things from sliding around, but also allows me to precut the top to within a few millimeters of the edge outline. That has solved tearout for me.

Yup, that is a really good way of aligning everything👍 I really need to stock up on my toothpicks for exactly this purpose.
As for solving tearout, I usually cut down much closer to the body or then use a spindle sander. Had a bit too much to clear this time honestly

@@IPGuitars Some species of woods are worse for that than others as well. Often there's nothing to be done about it.
On an unrelated note, I'd really love to have access to that thicknessing sander for a few minutes haha Have a good afternoon.

Oh for sure, next episode you'll see this. Wenge was cut like butter, but also this was veeeery cross-grained walnut, so already rather difficult to work with.
And man, the drum sander is just.. the best thing ever :D

I winced at that tear out. I feel your pain.

Did the same while editing this too, sucks, but fortunately the roundover took care of it :)

      @@IPGuitars There's always a fix, if you're crafty.
