Generally curious, why was Austrian rule of Croatia percieved so much more positively than Serbian/Yugoslavian rule? There was never any resentment towards Austrian rule in Croatia like it was under Yugolavia, correct?

Habsburg's generally took good care of Croatia. They built railroads, schools, hospitals, parks, roads, etc... they made us feel like a part of an empire, not subdued but trully part of
Yugoslavia (both of them) was completely different story.... hastily made union where each side lets be honest, hated each others guts...

@@novislav282 Serbian rule was opressive, and it was killing croatian identety simple put. Because u could hardly tell the difference between croat and serb. main difference is the church they go to.
But fun fuck on the side. Croatian strange border is the result of border between the Austrian Empire and Ottomans, that stayed to this day.

@@novislav282 the previous comments had great points as well. But aside from the investments they made in Croatia, their rule was never as opressive as the yugoslavian. We had autonomy for many matters until 1918, we even kept the Sabor, a parliament of Croatian nobles which goes back to the early middle ages.
But in the Kingdom of Yugoslavis there were active and brutal attempts at altering the Croatian language, surpression of Croatian national identity. Plus the religious differences didn't help
But the MAIN reason is that we entered the union with Serbia because we thought we would be equals. However, in 1928 a bunch of Croatian politicians, including Stjepan Radić, a famous Croatian democrat, were murdered in the parliament at the order of the king. After this the king did away with the parliament entirely and proclaimed a dictatorship.

    Bože živi, Bože štiti
(Oh living God, oh God protect)
    Cara našeg i naš dom.
    (Our Emperor and our home)
    Vječnom Ti ih slavom kiti,
    (With eternal glory adorn them)
    Snagom Ti ih jačaj svom.
    (With all power strengthen them)
    Ti nam sretne dane množi,
    (Multiply our joyous days)
    Habsburškoj ih kući daj,
(Give them to the Habsburg house)
    S njenom snagom zauvijek složi
    (With it's strength forever forge)
    Hrvatske nam krune sjaj.
(The glow of our Croatian Crown)
    Ti u našim stvori grud'ma
    (In our hearts create)
    Živi ponos, krotku ćud,
(A living pride, a humble spirit)
    Da smo mili svijem ljud'ma,
(So that we are nice to all)
    Na poštenju prvi svud.
    (And first in honesty everywhere)
    Ti nas krijepi svojom vjerom,
    (Strengthen us with your faith)
    Ravnaj naše sreće brod,
    (...)
    Da nam pođe pravim smjerom
    Sav naš složan mili rod.
(So that our united people takes the righteous path)
    No kad domu zlo zaprijeti,
    (And when evil threatens home)
    "U boj!" zovne Carev glas,
("To battle!" calls the Emperor's voice)
    Tad na ovaj poziv sveti
    (Then with this sacred call)
    Lavom budi svaki nas,
(All of us will become like lions)
    Da pred stijegom našim gine
    (That beneath our banner dies)
    Dušman svaki, Bože daj!
(Every scoundrel , oh God hear us!)
A nad nama s nova sine
    (And upon us shines anew)
    Blagog mira vedri sjaj!
    (The bright glow of peace!)
    Bože živi, srećom zlati
(Oh living God, with luck gild)
    Kraljevski nam sjajni dom,
    (Our royal shining home)
    Naša ljubav nek ga prati
    (Our love shall follow it)
    Do kraj međa žiću tom;
    (...)
    Blago, život Caru svome
(Happy, our life for the Emperor)
    Svaki od nas rado daj,
    (Each of us will give)
    Vječan bud' na svijetu tome

We Croats had our ups and downs with Habsburgs, but they (Habsburgs) really messed things up in 1914. Long live Jaroslav Hašek's books, so funny and so relevant as a history lesson. They (Hašek's book) might become relevant also for contemporary events again with all this Ukraine-Russia nonsense.

One could say none of the other big powers of europe would have done much differently, just that depending on the attackers supporting country other powers might not have joined the same way.
Imagine the heir to the british throne being murdered and they figure out that the attacker was supported by some in a neighbouring not so friendly smaller country.
Or if the same happened to the russian heir to the throne, or to the french prime minister...
Any of them would have started a war. They may not have waited a month, but each and every one would have delcared war on said supporting country to do a "punishment excursion".

In Croatian you literally read words EXACTLY the way it's spelled. No hard k sounding c's, double letters etc.
It's by far a superior language in these terms.

@@philipp0209 The fuck? Kind of bs argument is that? First of all Croatia is part of the western world so your argument falls already there, second the western world contains so many different languages so that doesn't hold either.
So why do then English pronounce c as c but at other times pronounce c as a hard k? Like Croatian or create, it's illogical and stupid. Same thing with having two L's in "illogical" it should be spelled the way it's pronounced "ilogikal" if you follow your own damn rules.
