Vataapi refers to the present day Badami town the then magnificient capital city of the imperial Chalukya empire which was a powerful dynasty originating on Karnataka and ruling over much of present day ksrnataka Maharastra Andhra Gujarat. Pulikeshi II of this dynasty defeats the overambitious North Indian Emperor Harshavardhana of Kannauj on the banks of river Narmada in 619 AD using clever elephant manuvers However he doesnt invade North India though entire North India lay at his feet.Pulikeshi II lets off the North Indian emperor after a truce agreement on his terms. The Chalukyas another claim to fame was under Emperor Vikramaditya II who defeated convincingly the Ummayud Arabs in 739 AD and prevented south indian expansion of arab rule who were already ruling in Sind Punjab. Chalukya and Pallava dynssty intense rivalry alternated with peropds of friendship and even marital links The rivalty begins when Pulikeshi II defeats the pallavas in a significant war 618 AD and gains huge ateas of Pallava territory .But soon the Pallavas regroup and win over the aging Pulikeshi in 642 AD .Badami, the capital city is ransacked and along eith other prized onjects the Ganesh idol in Badami temple is taken from there to Kanchi capital of Pallavas However Vikramaditya II the next chalukya emperor and son of Pulikeshi II soon avenges the earlier defeat .He defeats the Pallavas three times. In the final battle he wins by routing the pallava army and reaches Kanchi in 642 AD However in a statesmanly and humane pan indian act rarely seen in history by any victorious monarch Vikramaditya II doesnt destroy or loot but instead gives huge donations to various temples scholars pandits and religious instititions in the pallava kingdom His motive of revenge achirved He turns back to Badami He doesnt take back the Vaatapi Ganesha which continues to stay there till today
