Having all the data on the screen is great. GoPros don’t give much of a sense of the angles you’re riding on, so to see the elevation makes it that much more real. Excellent video, thank you!
Thank you for this ride. I am recovering from bad motorbike accident and I am training with stationary bike in home. Watching your guys awesome ride with my iPad. You have very long ride, so I do it in 10-15km sections. Keep on riding and sharing these cool videos. Greetings from Bali, Indonesia.
Hi Ben. Swiss Epic, one of the best races in the world if you like trails and dreamlike landscapes. And more technical than in previous years... Within the reach of few bikers. Congratulations Ben and Peter! Great video montage. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for long videos, thank you for sharing! We made it a whole week event to watch your Stages every night! Cheering on Peter too! You have a new follower now! I'm also talking my hubby into doing this race😅
I have spent far too much time watching your videos now... But I love them so :') I'm waiting for the snow and ice to go away here so I can get out there myself.
Just amazing content! Thanks so much for putting in the effort of recording and uploading it. What category were you in? Who would you say the event is tailored for from a fitness/technical standpoint?
Thanks! It really was a monumental video production effort to produce 16h of content for the Swiss Epic. I'm glad you are enjoying it! We were in the Masters category. I would say this event is tailored to the athlete who can train 500h yearly. Because, to feel good doing a 30h week on the bike, a 15h week must feel like a regular training week first. From a technical standpoint, I think this for a capable expert rider who's proficient in both technical climbs and descents. Preferably with enduro racing experience. Because it never looks steep or big on GoPro, but it's serious technical stuff out there that would turn into a hike-a-bike fest if not ready. It's an event that will really push an XC athlete in every aspect of the sport. Totally worth it IMO. For reference, Peter is a Sports category XC / Marathon / Enduro racer with plenty of Grand Fondos under his belt. I'm a Pro category XC / CX / Enduro racer with only one year of XC Marathon racing.
@@bengoyette Thank you very much for the information. Highly appreciated! Thanks to your videos and the GPS information I can and will ride the stages this summer to see if I will participate in the future. There are no qualifications/requirements for the Swiss Epic, right?
Also in reference to Bens comment - while i've kept up my cycling fitness in general, i have done a lot less competition in the last 5 years since Ben and got a bit out of shape, the first 8 months of 2021 i had to ramp up fitness and lose 7 kg in the process. I went into the Epic in really very decent shape although still 2 or 3 kg over my old race weight. I was totally unprepared for the steepness and technicality of some of the alpine trails, as Ben points out, the GoPro does not do justice to how steep some of the single track is both up and down as well as being very rocky and technical in places. If you keep an eye on Bens metrics on the right, you'll regularly see descents of 30+ % and climbing well over 15 and 20% gradients. My legs actually held up really well for the duration but my body (back especially) was cooked by the end of it. I think I probably went to a few darker places than Ben. If i could roll back time, I would approach my training a little differently, spending less time working on general fitness and more time finding the steepest chunkiest hiking paths around me and trying to ride up them. I'd also go with a smaller front chainring!
Thanks for sharing, Ben! The telemetry gave insight to how much gradient you encounter on epic rides. What chainring/cassette combination did you utilize for the this ride?
Great vid. I'm guessing the camera was handlebar mounted? I'm doing the 2022 Swiss Epic and would love to just do it from a chest mount but I Know the rules forbid it. Did you see anyone doing body mounted cameras?
I haven't seen a chest mount during the event. The handlebar mount was great because it did not bother me for during the long stages. Good luck out there this summer! It'll be a blast
Very nice race and top looking landscapes. Question, is the heart rate reading correct? I mean, for example @57.00 going up an 18% incline.... and just 155 bpm? Looks too low to me but I may be wrong . . .
I guess putting a go pro on the back of a Fiat Abarth cannot compare to this... Or on its sun roof... Amazing Captive Cruising... at the easy convenience of sitting on my couch. Seriously though how in the heck are you not scared cruising 16 KPH that trail. Or battling a 16 percent grade at 8 kph.... what the H man. Forgot about the mileage your going... it was hilarious to hear you say 1 / 10 the way... My hat is off to you.
I'm 78 and watched it all. Enjoyed every bump. Thank you for taking us with you.
It's a long one to watch! Thanks for riding with us.
I like how people are not super aggressive,, rather enjoying the race all together. And amazing scenery
That wasn't a race, it was a walk.
😂😂😂
The word epic gets tossed around a lot in endurance sports. This course definitely deserves it!
True

So jealous about the trails and views
this video says St. Moritz Switzerland! nice job great video!!! thumb up for giving location

What a dream course! Good job! 💪
Thank you 🙌
WOW!!!! That Was Very Cool. Thank You. Amazing!
que hermosos lugares y gran carrera te felicito tu compañero igual de esforzado que tú saludos desde Chile eres un guerrero....
Thank you! Peter is a warrior!
Great course. Thanks again Ben👍
My pleasure Tom!
Nice .!😀 Fun distraction while on treadmill.
Thanks!! 🙏 keep on running
Fantastic effort through a tough stage day.
Absolutely. Thanks Dan
Great video as usual. Thanks Ben. I think, I'd be tired from this very first day for a few next days)))
Thanks! Yeah, each day was an epic ride
Yaaaaaaa Hooooooooo! That downhill!
Stunning. Good luck!

@@peterwilson1831 What size chainring did you use? Great video too. I'll be watching the other stages while I zwift!
The highlight for me was the lengthy Corviglia flow trail starting at 1:14:09. Which section was your favorite?
Def that descent from the highest point of the day. Looked super fun.

@@findtherightbeat 34 x 50 was not enough. I chose poorly.
@@findtherightbeat I was using 32T chainring and a 10-52T cassette. I was happy to have a low gearing for those insanely steep climbs
@@peterwilson1831 Thanks, Peter!
Nice riding buddy!
Ben! How have you been? Man, I wish I would bring the enduro bike to those swiss trails someday
Thank you for filming full length videos. Always enjoy watching! Question. What travel bike did you choose to ride for this race?
Thanks! I was racing the 2021 Scott Spark RC 900 SL with a FOX 34 110mm travel.
Magnificent
48:12 interesting music!
Gotta cover up the copyrighted music playing in the background 😆
1:14:00 nice track :)
OMG that was so good. That one trail is worth the trip to Switzerland.
What setting on the GoPro keeps camera in direction and not follow all the bar movement?
It's the HyperSmooth stabilization that does that. The horizon leveling was off, but in hindsight I should have probably turned it on.
Great view start from 1.14.00
Yes!! That view was amazing

Thanks for your vid. Can you tell me your weight on that time? Just to put these watts in perspective
138 lbs.
Very nice race and top looking landscapes. Question, is the heart rate reading correct? I mean, for example @57.00 going up an 18% incline.... and just 155 bpm? Looks too low to me but I may be wrong . . .
Thanks! Yes that sounds about right. My LTHR was 174bpm and I trained my Zone 3 really hard so I would rarely go above threshold.
@@bengoyette Wow impressive achievement man! Well done 👍 Keep it up
What device or tracker gets the track on the screen
Any cycling computer would record the gps route. I used Garmin VIRB Edit to generate the map overlay.

What is your tire pressure for such terrain?
Somewhere between 20-23 PSI. We didn't have a precise gauge so we set pressure by eye & feel.
Real question on the calibration chart what is BPM?
That is the heart rate in beats per minute (bpm)
Which if your keeping below 150 BPM for this strenuous course... Man, you need adrenaline just to sleep.
Is that hiker taking a leak at 1:51:08?
Looks like it 😆

Thanks!
What tires did you run?
I was running the Kenda Regolith Pro 2.2 SCT. Truly remarkable on that terrain.
I was running Schwalbe Racing Ray up front and Racing Ralph on the rear......both reinforced casing (ground control)
1:14:36 scary
The gate? I was glad it only bounced off the tire 😅
that little gate is so thin, you can't see it until you're close, and then its kinda too late!
"No need to kill the quads"......*Spoiler Alert*....many quads were killed in the making of this video.
Hahaha we failed that mission. Poor quads.
i watched a few races but still cannot understand why someone would like to ride over terrible bumps and risk his life.
Some people sit on bar stools and drink alcohol for the same reason
