  • It’s Buster’s talkie debut with a special “as you’ve never heard it before” bonus! Keaton’s first sound foray sees Buster skewering Hollywood itself with the tale of a wannabe starlet (Anita Page) that arrives in Tinseltown with some extra baggage - an overprotective mother (Trixie Friganza) and an even more overprotective gas station attendant (Keaton). A coterie of star cameos accompanies a costarring Robert Montgomery, who plays a “Latin lover,” no less! And speaking of Latin, as an added bonus, Free and Easy is now paired with its Spanish-language version Estrellados. Rarely seen since its initial overseas release, Estrellados is a prime example of the once customary practice of “parallel production” that helped Hollywood market their fare overseas during the silent-to-sound transition. It’s a full alternative version of the film, shot simultaneously with Free and Easy starring Buster and a Spanish-speaking cast. ¡Viva la Comedia!

That diving trick was heart-racing; and so is his deep, raspy register! But, his Spanish is a fascinating form of Hollywood illusion that's making me feel better about my practice of the language.

Fact: this is my great auntie and she spoke several languages not only that but she was the first Latina actress in Hollywood, and pioneer the movie industry, her school of acting was German impressionism also it takes years to study theater and I don’t expect you to understand acting unless you have been born into it,so to haters acting is an Art and Art takes devotion. Something you will never understand, she was not just an actress, she was also a innovator for Film Cameras and also the one of the first actresses with Fairbanks family to establish Unions in Hollywood.

Somehow, this version isn’t as moving as the English version ...

Kind of strange hearing Buster's Kansas-style Spanish. I wonder what the Japanese version sounded like?

Now I understand what it means to read and learn the scipt phonetically. Spanish is my native language, and this sounds so weird! Even so, It´s not so bad to hear Buster´s accent, because it´s funny but the actress was awful.

Yup. Kinda sounds like Spanish when I attempt it. Even after two years of it in high school, and 30+ years of trying to talk to Hispanics, the only person who appreciated MY Espanol was that nice señora De España at my volunteer job under the Catholic Church. Thank goodness they taught Castilliano.
