You are made of polymers, and so are trees and telephones and toys. A polymer is a long chain of identical molecules (or monomers) with a range of useful properties, like toughness or stretchiness -- and it turns out, we just can't live without them. Polymers occur both naturally -- our DNA is a polymer -- and synthetically, like plastic, Silly Putty and styrofoam. Jan Mattingly explains how polymers have changed our world.

I love how she breaks character at 2:44 lol
This video really helped me in understanding what the polymers are. I have been juggling around the video but did not find better than this. Thank you❤
I am currently writing a research paper on plastics for my World Issues class.. Thank you for creating this when you did and making it so helpful!! :D
What was your grade?
@@lorenzolemos8431 i dont think they would remember 6 years ago
@@reesefreidenreich7891 haha
HI im from india i am currently studying polymer science and technology does foregn countries has demand on polymer
So am I right by saying that everything we can see pretty much consists of polymers 😂 another way of saying groups of atoms(molecules) of everything known to man
Even my eyes balls looking at the words I’m now typing consist of polymers which are what? Atoms but bonded in gruos as there are many which when many are molecules and again many molecules bonded are polymers? Hahhaa
Why do we complicate it by giving it another section by its name
Why not call them grouped molecules instead of polymers? Or am I missing the point here ???
I'm allergic to vinyl and it doesn't carry a warning. My days are trying to avoid touching stuff. I hope one day they put warnings on products like they do with latex:(
The anti-hipster disease.
Ryan Jackson Thank you for the laugh!
D.J. Antihistamine
Amandaajt1 Don’t touch pvc either
You can not put in everything a warning, it is about self-responsibility!
Very helpfull. And the narrator's voice is so good.
Just learned about polymers in my organic chemistry class today. Free-radical chemistry is amazing
Thank you for your video
Thankyou so much for your animation video
I love chemistry
you can hear her laughing
mono means one and rail means rail!
love these vids
I'd rather be a polymer then than either a polywag or polywhirl
... or a pollyanna
What are the properties of a monomer/polymer in simple
Cn anyone make a vdio on plant reproduction and electronic components eg:-transister and there properties
Love a good polymer
Your laugh is good, ma'am
Here for a science lesson anyone?
Why didn't I get this earlier during my high-school?
am I the only 1 who is losing brain cells at light speed, what sin did I commit for my teacher to tell me to watch this 0_0
Too many confusing words eekkk
diana moulton
That’s why you’re here to learn 😄
2021?
Could I go a day without using plastic, YESSS!!!
Leaf also polymer?
Life is polymer.
EmperorsAlpaca interesting :D
Not all synthetic polymers are derived from petroleum.
Hi I’m doing work on this
I like how she just says, "But what the heck are they?"
@@leetamez823 I do not even remember watching this video
Someone please make a summary thanks

@@jordanmckee4970 thanks bro but I needed to know for class 2 years ago
a synthetic come out from a bright light God🤣🤔👽
What isn't a polymer? Isn't everything made up of repetitive molecules a polymer? So everything that consists of two or more types of elements is a polymer?
Two or more elements make a compound.
Why aren't we incinerating our MSW? It allows us to produce electricity with our waste, if done correctly it doesn't necessarily means that any significant amount of fly ash should be released and when we send them directly to the dump they tend to produce methane as they decompose, enough to cause about as much greenhouse effect as the CO2 we would release burning them.
I think they would release more. The entirety of the item would be thrown out into the sky. Co2 and Methane would be released.
Who got Mrs. Fundedburg (awhs)
Dayum....what was the real name of Bakelite again?
wood is a composite made up of materials that include polymers, wood itself is not a polymer
Ahem. Protein is made up of polymers. As are neucleotides.
Polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride
I am allergic to polymer help i am on the floor in pain
what did I say it builds up by one miracles of all a bright light God🤔🤣👽
haha me too
Miss Maxwell/Cohen anyone???
Despacito
We need to turn all waste into energy
polymers need to be exposed of by burning them, not being sent to a landfill. that is how we come across shortages in materials. when you burn the material it completely separates all bonds and you are left with the base of the molecule carbon. this will allow for the natural creation of certain materials.
I don't know anything about chemistry.
Are u sure about that?
Burning plastic creates harmful dioxins and if incinerators are inefficient, these leak into the environment.
hi everyone im in class and i wanna kms ;)
get some help
No

I love Chem but not the teacher
Anyone else from Ms. Eichenlaub's class (Hermosa Valley) here? If so, what period are you in? I want to see how many of us checked the comments. I'm Period 5 btw

Questionable insulator...
the invention of plastic is the best but in long term its the worse
All polymers are harming the environment, not just some.
Nice.
