Retail Inflation Reaches 5.08% in June, Highest in 4 Months

- Sensex, Nifty Hit Record Highs Boosted by IT and Tech Stocks.Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty surged nearly 1% to reach new all-time highs on Friday, driven by robust buying in IT and tech stocks following stellar earnings from Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).The 30-share BSE Sensex soared 622 points or 0.78% to a new closing high of 80,519.34. Intraday, it spiked 996.17 points or 1.24% to hit a record peak of 80,893.51. Meanwhile, the NSE Nifty climbed 186.20 points or 0.77% to close at a historic 24,502.15. During the day, it surged 276.25 points or 1.13% to a new lifetime high of 24,592.20.TCS led the gains, jumping nearly 7% after reporting an 8.7% rise in June quarter net profit to Rs 12,040 crore. Other notable gainers included Infosys, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, Axis Bank, Reliance Industries, JSW Steel, Bajaj Finance, and Larsen & Toubro.
Retail inflation climbed to a four-month high of 5.08% in June 2024, up from 4.80% in May, according to the latest government data. The Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation reported that rural inflation reached 5.66%, while urban areas experienced a 4.39% rate.Food prices continue to be a primary driver, with food inflation jumping to 9.55% in June from 8.69% in May. This marks a significant increase from the 4.55% recorded in June 2023. Rural areas saw inflation rise to 5.67% in June, up from 5.34% in May and 4.78% a year ago. Interestingly, urban inflation slightly decreased to 4.39% in June from 4.21% in May.Despite the uptick, inflation remains within the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) tolerance band of 2-6%.IMD predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall in some Odisha districts; check latest weather updates
