Don’t encourage people to look for cushy jobs. If the work is easy in a comfortable space, everyone will want to do it. Thus promotion will be slow, no proficiency pay, and very low re-enlistment bonus.
Look for a rate that teaches skills that you can take to the civilian job market when you get out. Having a TS clearance will really make you marketable in many fields. Also look at where the ratings work; some keep you at sea for multiple tours, some are mainly shore based. Decide which you prefer.
I was a Radioman. It is cushy; but it is a lot of responsibility.

Aviation Machinist Mate is a great high skills,high paying job, in the civilian world you are a real Machinist, you join a civilian defense contractor like Boeing, Lockheed, you join UAW machinist Union wages $40+ per hour plus benefits,wage and benefits package about $80 per hour. Plus you are under federal labor laws jurisdiction not State labor law jurisdiction. Air traffic controller also great, Nukes of course, Chief Electrical engineer CHENG , warrant officer great job. If you go NAVY get some real good paying job skills. Tug boat captains make good money also, good duty also. Special Boat Units is great duty,small community also.

I’m an ITS, been on my boat 2 years now. ITS’ have a super cake job! YN drive the ship and do paperwork for the XO. LSS’ are pretty easy too, they drive the ship and handle parts too. Quality of life for an ITS is pretty nice!

I was an STS on the Atlanta and the Minneapolis St. Paul from 97 to 01 and we were considered to be one of the best rates, known as "showertechs " at sea, and having the rep of being " last ones on and first ones off." Pretty good opertunities after also. We used "Family grams" the paper tape u talked about, limited to apx 130 words. Awesome Video though

@@esdeecali6743 study geometry, trig and basic algebra. LISTEN TO YOUR SEA-DAD when you get to your first boat, get qualified for everything you can as fast as u can ( it will give you privileges on the boat) stay in 20 years and retire(it goes by faster than you think)

USS Alabama (SSBN-731) as a civilian, back before 911. They allow Family to do the Dive in Hood Canal at the end of deployment. The BEST job that I saw as a civilian just doing a tour of the boat, the guys in the Nuclear Launch control compartment. It just looked like an enjoyable job area to work. The Torpedo area also had a huge pad on top of Battery banks, so you could sleep on that pad instead of crashing in your Rack. It was a HUGE very soft pad.
Oh God....I haven't thought about Format Line 2 in 25 years, but now that you bring it up, I could recite the whole thing, no problem. Crazy. (career RM/SS).

Best job on the boat: Sonar. We always knew where we were, what we were doing and had a pretty easy watch.

Best - Quality of Life Aboard
(1) HM - No In-port duty section, no at sea watches (however always on call)
(2) RM - Unless at PD they literally do nothing, however while at PD they really busy so if they ask you to do something do it or lose you email.
(3) CS - Pass all of their crap jobs off on cranks, never hot racks.
(4) YN - Everyone wants to be your friend, you handle routing of leave chits and sort out pay issues.
Worst - Quality of Life Aboard [Though Engineering Department as a whole can lay claim to this]
(1) MM - AGang abandon all hope of sleep - owns about 90% of the ship always doing PMs, Repairs, or training.
(2) Strikers - Do not go to the fleet without a rating [Surface, Subs, or Aviation], you will end up doing all of the worst jobs hoping to be allowed to strike a good rating [Never seen a striker, actually be allowed to strike anything other then CS, MM, or TM]
(3) ET - ET Navs always working on charts, the IC systems or checking atmospheres.
(4) STS - Sonar Div is the body locker of the boat, for just about any crap duty a COBs answer will be grab a Sonarmen.
As a FTG (Fire Contol Tech) on a boomer got to spend time at many watchstations. Torpedo Rm, Sonar Shack, and dive and driving. During Battle Stations I was literally the "Trigger man". My first boat only had 2 FTGs so we were combined with the TMs (Torpedomen) as a division. Later, the FT rate was combined with the DS (Data Systems) personnel.
So how would you rate your rate I'm going into basic in August but I'd like to know because I chose Secf and I'm hoping to get FCT same rate different name.
Quartermaster for 23 years. On diesels I always knew where we were and learned early how to use celestial navigation. Useful after service if you want to be a merchant mariner/tugboat Captain. On the fast attacks it was pretty much in the center of what was going on and I enjoyed the action. On the Boomers it was really boring on patrol but by that time I was an E-8 and was one of the diving officers and did training as the assistant conning officer. Can't say that helped after the career ended. At 86 I still wish I could go back in time to do it again.
As a nuke EM who rode a fast attack during the cold war, I always thought the sonar techs (ST) and radioman (RM) had the best jobs (easy work and a buffalo shower after each watch).
What is a Buffalo shower
Water was not to be abused while at sea and taking a "submarine shower" was meant to conserve it. No one wanted to be labeled a "water buffalo."

YN here. YNS can be an easy job or it could be your worst nightmare (all depends where you end up honestly). I’ll add some in sight into the rating below ⬇️
Rate background: YNS (Yeoman Submarines) is basically three rates in one with the following: PS + LN + YN. Which means you’re main responsibilities are Admin, Legal, and pay.
Watches: Being a YNS is different than a YN. Submarines doesn’t have a lot of personnel to have a lot of wiggle room in watchbill flexibility so that’s where we help out. As a Yeoman will have to qualify: Topside/sentry, Helms and planes (SSBN/SSGN), Below decks (our senior-in rate), and a sonar watch per the CTQS. Now I’m qualified EW Operator, so you can qualify something that interests more than a sonar watch, but it’s ultimately up to your command what’s needed of you. I have seen Yeoman qualified Torpedo room watch and oddly enough QMOW, so don’t think you’ll just be bound to Sonar or Fire Control.
Work environment: YNS manning standardly set to 2 or 3 personnel per boat (SSN) or the same per crew (SSBN/SSGN). You will always be busy something whether it’s Directives and correspondence, pay issues (Nukes I love you guys, but you make our lives miserable 😂), awards, mail, etc…essentially whatever your crew, LYN, COB, or XO needs you have to provide a solution for. Internet connectivity out to sea is slim to none most times depending if the night orders allows us an hour or were in mission waters (none 😑), but in port shouldn’t be much trouble getting work done on sales force, NSIPS, BOL, TOPS, or whatever you need work done on. It’s a thankless job majority of the time as every department (besides our supply brethren 🥲) will out shine you in awards, but don’t let them forget who made look nice on fancy card stock 😏

The best job on the sub...there's jobs on board that are going to be sweet and easy...but once out, either retire, or separate how are you going to get a job or go to school, pay attention on your quals, and get your QA quals along with ships, being a nuke is a shoe in for a sweet job, but the level of education for the whole boat is top tier...yea dummies slip through, but sub vets get easy head for school and jobs.
I'm old, was an FTB, we had our own locked space like radio but was much bigger.
Okay, back in 82, I was on the Simon Bolivar, we were returning to port after patrol. This was from the days of Family Grams, there was no such thing as Email. Back then (and presumably now) we filled out deployment paperwork to outline what you want to know. Things like if someone died, do you want to know. I always said no.
We were coming into port and I get called to the CO's cabin. I was wondering what I'd done wrong as I went to see the CO. I get there and he says, "Harmon, I hate to tell you this, but Mo has died.
I blinked and asked, "Mo? My wife's cat?"
"Mo is your wife's cat? You don't need emergency leave?"
I never liked the cat, Sir, I'm good for turnover."
Every patrol after that one, we were required to list our pets on the deployment paperwork.
I'm in my ITS "A" School right now. I came in as SECF and was put into ETR (Radioman) upon arrival to Subase New London, but the rate was recently absorbed by ITS, so now all ETRs coming in are officially ITS. I didn't hear about it in this video, but that's what's going on up here.
We will basically have the jobs of both ITS and ETR at once, of course, it will likely be split between each specialty ([EW - Electronic Warfare] and [COMM - Communications]), but I can't really say for certain because I've not yet finished my schooling. It's all pretty fresh, so there's not too much info available yet.

As a 7 year Submarine RM I have earned a great living in my post Navy career(25 years for the Navy and 9 years now for the AF) has beyond successful. Based on that early 80s 1.5 years a of pipeline education.
What boat were you on that the NAVETs didn't do work in port? Shit they are one of the busiest division outside of nukes and Agang.
I was a NAV ET in the early 90s. Underway watch standing was cake and we had access to radio as well! I had the responsibility of maintaining the sub's entertainment system (NMPS). My time as the planesman really sucked!! Haha

I was going for nuke but needed to take the NAPT and had to sign a 8 year contract as MMS in the mean time but now it looks like ill be going as MMS and I’m reconsidering if it’s something I want to do. Any advice on if it’s worth doing?

Helping recruit an friends son into the Nuclear Program, which is what I did. I was on Surface ships and that's probably what he wants to do. He's getting a $38,000 enlistment bonus and then can extend his enlistment to 8 years for another $160,000...
I just signed for Nuke MM and the bonuses are insane! Might I ask, how was the quality of life as a nuke on a sub?

My nephew's son is a nuke,his recruiter told him to wait till the boat is in International waters then ask the Captain for an extension, this way you don't have to pay the Fed taxes.
Only rate in the day was FTB! (Firecontrol Technichan Ballistic)! Had airconditioning, carpeted floors, controlled the tunes being played throughout the boat only about 12 people on the ship could access MCC (Missile Contrtol Center)! FTB1 (SS/DV) 1969-1979 Uss Will rogers 5 patrols, USS Hunley 2 years, Firecontrol Tech Instructor Charleston.
46 years ago I was a Quartermaster on both Fast Attack and SSBB. No easier job in the NAVY, however, QM on a submarine was boring.
Every Submarine requires 2 EMT trained personnel. Also Doc train a group of 10 for Emergency Medical Assistance Team.

About to enlist as an E3, subs, either FT or Sonar, is what are the pros and cons of each, in terms of lifestyle and duties but more so, I really want to visit Germany so is there a preferred class of submarine or job that would allow me to do that more than the other?
Bro, ask yourself what do you want to do in the next 4 years, it'll change day to day, your going to hit a wall along the way, and you'll hate everything, you may bounce back, you may finish your enlistment and get out for a follow on, FT and STS have very good technical skill that open giant doors either retirement, or separation.
You don’t really choose in the SECF rates you can probably switch with someone when your in BESS if you didn’t get what you want. If you want to visit Germany you’ll have to be on a fast boat so try to get stationed in Groton or Virginia.
The best job doesn't necessarily mean easy. If I were ranking the best job would be the most exciting job and transferable skillset.
My grandson, thru marriage, will graduate HS in 2023 and is dead set on joining the Navy. As an AF vet, I tried to talk him out of it, to no avail. Anyway he has it in his mind to be a submariner. Here is what I am concerned with and how it could affect his chances.
Both of his parents are/were drug addicts. His dad (My wife’s son), did not raise him and was not involved in his life or upbringing, is a violent career felon, who has spent most of his adult life in prison.
His mother is no gem either. Has addiction issues as I mentioned, a lot of mental issues, etc. She lost custody of her 3 kids(each a diff. father) and her mother got custody.
Now I don’t know my grandson very well, as he lives in another state, but he seems like a decent young man, well adjusted and well mannered. He has been going thru therapy for most of his childhood to help cope with his family issues and shit his mother put him through. He also is somewhat of a loner, spending most of his time in his room playing video games, etc. He says he is doing well in school and doesn’t drink or do any drugs.
You Navy vets and submariners what is your opinion on his chances. Also on the subscreen , etc.
Continue to support his decision the military changes every day so can’t speak to his sub chances but make sure he chooses a rate vital for sub life and his chances should be fine also hopefully he is ok with being self motivated sub life is for loner’s I was a Em so 🤞 and fair winds.

My SR shipped out OS rate 9/1/20. I got the I've arrived to GL phone call and form letter. Now I'm waiting for phone call after ROM.
Part of what makes a good job is the sea/shore duty years rotation.
FT, Fire Control Technician was the best job because your the reason the boat is there and everybody else is there to help you accomplish the job!

As a former submariner the best job us ITS (information systems technician) your watch you get to walk around and you don't sit there for 8 hours. Also you become a dc expert because your very involved with dc drills. And after the navy your a shoe in for a classified systems administrator starting making 80+k a year. "ITS is allowed in the raio room to work on the edge switch and work on a few pieces of equipment"
How is it on a sub? I have ITS as an option. I had IT but lost it and took AECF, now I can pick ITS. But living on a sub is the thing that's making it a hard decision.
@@chris-dd6uq In all honesty if u want to hit the fleet fast and be able to hit a lot of ports and possibly get stationed in a foreign country choose IT if you want to be stuck in school for a year and a half (maybe even longer depending on how long it takes to class up) and barely hit or even never hit ports choose ITS. Also surface IT's do their A-School in Pensacola, Florida and ITS's do their schooling in Groton, Connecticut. Although the advancement for ITS's is really good it depends on if you get Comms or EW, but the advancement rate for surface IT's are still really good as well.

So as sonar I had T.S clearance. Radio gets what we called “Super Secret Squirrel.” If you have 2 ask there is a reason why u don’t know.

Go for ANYTHING other than M Division! That sucked pond water through a Howdy Doody straw. I did turn it into a 35 year career in the commercial industry, though.
Family gram censoring is def a thing in other navies, for obvious reasons, telling someone one of his relatives might be dieing or dead in the middle of a mission is going to cause more harm than good.

Speaking from experience , Submarine Nukes normally have higher bonuses and also better advancements
Don't volunteer for subs yet you will have tons of people you can talk to about it after you join and you can always sub vol if you decide to but I would wait until you get to prototype because then you get to see what they are kinda like

Quartermaster and Boatswains Mate are the ones that drive the boat, but your not guaranteed to drive it.

Our Doc was prior Surface. So he was a riot!! Doc Ballard was his name!! But who wants 2 be doc. I was a rare 3rd class LPO. So I had locker keys. And I got 2 sleep in fwd berthing next 2 the sonar dome. Which meant if we hit something I would defiantly die first. 🤷♂️🤦♂️

😂 you still have to no some of each others rate due to the small crew , it isn't a easy job on the sub.
Back in the day when Submarine Radiomen were real, we did it all. Operated and repaired our transmitters, receivers, and crypto equipment onboard submarines. Format line two of a naval message was not "TTP" as stated by the IT guy. It would start with R(for routine), P(priority) O(immediate) or F(flash) to designate how quickly the message was to be handled. As in: "PTTUZYUW", etc. Also, since there were no emails back then, crew members would get "Family Grams" from home. Also, any AMCROSS message was always handled "Commanding Officer's Eyes Only". If it was concerning a radioman, the message was offline encrypted. The RMOW (radioman of the watch) would start the decrypt through the heading of the message, stop and get the CO to come to Radio to finish running the tape through the offline crypto machine. Then the Capt would call whichever RM it concerned into his stateroom. Obviously, it would have been bad if RM's were allowed to decrypt the message by themeselves! RMCM(SS) (retired)
