As a footballing nation, Argentina is decorated with legends. But before the days of Emi Martinez, one position where they were often overlooked was that of the goalkeeper. Argentina’s football history focuses on the outfield players while the showstoppers get overlooked, but for over 20 years, Argentina was blessed with a River Plate goalkeeper whose methods were met with bewilderment at the time, but went on to be signs of the future of goalkeeping, and whose name deserves a lot more respect.

Took a while to catch on in England. Tommy Lawrence used to do it in training for Liverpool, and Shanks told him to do it at Anfield. The Kop nearly had kittens, but it worked, and let Liverpool develop that high line of defence that so strangles the oppositions and pens them in their own half.
