    I truly hope that this kid is not guilty of this type thing, because his life will have been destroyed. No NBA team will draft him; his hard work will be without benefit. In our world, celebrities and athletes are often targets. We do not know if alcohol was involved, which would complicate in even more, because a “yes” is not a consent if she was intoxicated. As a graduate from Texas Tech School of Law & born & raised in the greater St. Louis area of Illinois, I will be saddened. Surely the prosecution believes it has a good case, or they should have waited to file. There is not a Statute of limitations problem, but they have had a lot of time for police investigation, as well as prosecution review. Unfortunately, there is no win here. He has already been damaged. Without playing, he has no chance at player of the Year or a high draft pick. If it is true, life will be forever changed.

    TSJ will probably beat the case. The fact is that it took them almost 4 months to charge him meaning its not an open and shut case. All the evidence they have is that TSJ's DNA was found in the plaintiff. It is a he said vs she said. Proving beyond a reasonable doubt would be really hard

    • @carlw6247
      @carlw6247 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Unfortunately for Shannon, probably not. The truth is that it often takes months or longer to build a case that makes prosecutors confident enough to proceed. Also, what you say on the DNA evidence doesn't make any sense if Shannon denied, even temporarily, sexual contact with her to investigators. Instead, that would make it look like he didn't have consent. Also, DNA isn't the only evidence that Shannon has to worry about. There could be evidence of bruising or other injuries that suggests the alleged rape was done in a manner consist with her allegation. (I don't claim to know the details of her complaint here; I'm just saying it is possible.) In the end, it might not be a he-said vs. she-said in that way. We'll know in 2024 when this case gets presented in Douglas County courtroom.

    I really appreciate your guys' great coverage of all things Illinois basketball, including this situation. I think you've navigated this topic very well.
    With respect to why Illinois has made TSJ the face of the program thus far this season, I think what it comes down to is that they followed the policy; specifically, until he was charged, he was a part of the team. But, him being one of the best players in the country put them in a really awkward situation because if they didn't hype him up, people would eventually notice and start raising questions.
    Look at it from the program's POV as the season was getting started. Imagine a scenario where TSJ is playing the way he's playing, but the program basically ignores that fact, people start asking questions, and word finally leaks out. Then, because they didn't know how it would play out, imagine the case is dropped, but the allegations are still out there because Illinois was treating him like a pariah.
    Unless we find out that the DIA knew much much more about where the investigation would ultimately go, I think they did the right thing, regardless of how it looks in retrospect. And even then, if the policy says that they allow the police investigation to run its course before making any decisions, then I have a hard time faulting them for following the policy.

    • @colejames423
      @colejames423 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah I mostly agree. I don’t think it’s fair to point fingers at the university just yet. There’s still so much we don’t know, but it sounds like they tried to get info from the authorities in Lawrence but were given basically nothing. To suspend a player on that basis doesn’t make sense. The moment charges were brought, he was immediately suspended.
      Hopefully as things play out we‘ll get more info on what the university knew, what Shannon told them, and what actually happened.

    • @carlw6247
      @carlw6247 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Right, but you didn't mention the LPD investigation, which requires probable cause and normally involves a recommendation to prosecutors. You also didn't mention the Douglas County Circuit Court which issued the arrest warrant when a judge on that court felt there was sufficient evidence for it. So, in that sense, there are three organizations (police, prosecutors, and a court) that normally concur and work together before an arrest warrant is issued, which in this case is what triggered Shannon's arrest. That doesn't mean he is guilty of these charges, but it is also not the work of a single states attorney.

    Allegedly, this incident occurred at a bar after the Illinois-Kansas football game. I have heard rumors that there was a "fingering" situation and that it was "consensual" but perhaps at some point, the alleged victim changed her mindset on whether it was actually "consensual" or not. So, it seems to be a complicated he said-she said situation. Not sure on anything more than that but a very tough situation all around for everyone involved. This is very opposite of the character we've seen from TSJ so I think it is hard for many of us to think that he "raped" someone but we can't rush to judgement in either case

Had she told police and prosecutors that she gave consent, then it would have been very difficult for them to proceed with the police investigation / criminal prosecution. Therefore, she likely never granted consent. In other words, you are citing rumors from the internet that likely don't agree with what the alleged victim told police / prosecutors. But if you want more facts from the prosecution, you'll have to follow what is presented in that Douglas County court in 2024.

      I expected AD Whitman to do his job which included monitor a criminal investigation centered on a University of Illinois athlete that Whitman knew about "since late September" (by his own admission on 12/29) and then to act on it (at least within a few days) of when charges were filed on 12/5. The fact that he chose not to do this, but, instead, that he chose to "funnel all communication" (his words) through the University of Illinois police is outrageous. He admitted that never contacted the LPD or Douglas County prosecutors nor ever inquired to them about whether charges would be filed and, if so, when that might happen. He also didn't check with any regularity, likely daily or even weekly, to see if that information changed.
      In short, I expected DA Whitman to do his job and make sure that an athlete who represented the University of Illinois but was likely to soon face criminal charges (or already did) would be promptly suspended in accordance with the department's policy. DA Whitman didn't do that and in doing so, he failed the University from 12/5 to 12/28. This meant that Shannon played in four University of Illinois basketball games that he shouldn't have had DA Whitman followed this policy.

    Champaign police new but did the program know? Wouldn’t you continue to play deeper into the bench if you knew and thought you’d have this disruption. It just seems the program didn’t know.

      50/50 agree. Shannon's lawyer said he was cooperating with law enforcement since the investigation began. I would assume if the lawyer is involved, the program would know something. The program also said it knew but didn't have enough to make an appropriate action then... maybe that's telling

    This video will age extremely poorly if current speculation on the story is true. Likely should have waited to release this until more facts came out.

    Some of you are sad. Sports arent that important. All some of you are thinking about is omg poor Terrence he cant play ever again his life is ruined. If he wasnt a basketball player on your favorite team, you'd be saying this kid was trash and deserves to be locked up. Hopefully he isnt guilty but stop assuming girl is falsely accusing him.

      You realize that the information that’s being leaked is that he was fingering a drunk 18 year girl in a largely crowded and very public bar. You think that is grounds to ruin the young man’s life?

    YOU KIDS PUT OUT NICE ENTERTAINING VIDEOS. THAT BEING SAID...YOU SEEM WAY TOO CONFIDENT IN THE "LEGAL SYSTEM" AND WAY TOO READY TO DIFFERINTIATE ALLEGATIONS W THE WORD "CHARGES" ... TELL ME THIS...WHY DID PROSECUTING ATTORNEYS NEED 3-4 MONTHS TO FILE FORMAL CHARGES>>? HERE;S A GUESS ....IT'S BOGUS. SOME GIRLS JEALOUS BF MAYBE GOT INVOLVED? WHO REALLY KNOWS? ONE THING;S FOR SURE...BEING CHARGED WITH A CRIME DOESNT MAKE YOU GUILTY. AGAIN...WHAT TOOK 4 MONTHS ? THE TRUTH >? OR THE bXLL SHXXT ?

    Even if he’s charged, it’s still “alleged”. He is innocent UNTIL proven guilty. He should not have been suspended. He says he’s innocent. Wittman is weak

    It is kinda depressing how many of the people in these comments are saying it’s a false accusation. You 100% can say that he’s innocent until proven guilty and that’s totally good and well, but that also doesn’t mean you can say it’s a false accusation. False accusations are way rarer than all of you are making them out to be

    • @abideasthat
      @abideasthat 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I work on the front lines and I can tell you that false accusations are incredibly common. Whether it’s a jaded girlfriend or a girl that is worried she got pregnant and was ashamed to tell her parents, I’ve seen it all.

      It’s definitely too early to judge one way or the other. There’s literally no concrete details of what happened out to the public at this point.
      I’d question the “false allegations are rare” thing though. There’s multiple examples of high profile athletes being falsely accused of this type of stuff

    Oh well. When you get to only play football and not attend any classes, you get in trouble with all the empty time you have.
    Make ALL players attend classes and pass, not just let them play football for the profit of the college's money.
