I really like the idea of this one, never seen a valve used as a switch before. I wondered how electrically safe it would be but it looks perfectly safe.

Good job. I especially liked the 'pin' you placed through the switch to keep it in place. Very durable solution. Impossible without having a drill press btw, but that's another story ;)

+MrSjeupie I wouldn't say impossible, you could clamp the switch down in a vice like he had on his bench, and drill down into it with a dremel or regular drill! It wouldn't definitely be MUCH more challenging though!
+MrSjeupie What? Just couple days ago i drilled straight hole all free handing with cordless drill. It all depends on your stance, grip and i guess experience.
The "pin" trough the switch is terrible idea, specially when it has treads in it and its connected to all metal frame of the lamp. Just think about what will happen when eventually treads will cut trough insulation of the wires ,cause whole assembly will move slightly every time nub is turned. I really hope this thing is grounded, or we will get another Darwins award soon...
@@Hellsong89 I totally agree. Drilling through the switch could inadvertently damage the wires and you wouldn't even know it, until the day you receive an electric shock. A better solution would be to screw on a bigger nut or a thick plastic ring on to the switch and then drill a small hole through the bolt or plastic ring body only.

Cool : ) I do something similar but I hook up dimmer switches to the valve - Nut epoxied to the dimmer cover, nut screws on to the bottom of the valve - slides right on and presto - Takes about 5 minutes : )
What kind of dimmers do you use?

I've made a couple of test bottle/bulb assemblies and tested with incandescent tubular bulbs (waiting on small L.E.D's) because the problem is the heat from bulb gets bottle hot and it develops cracks at the neck where it's connects to the union!!! questions: connection too tight at bottle pipe? I've used steel and plastic washers. (I won't give away the Secret here🙄) Maybe venting bottle at this union? what bulb do u use? I know the LED will stop the heat problem, but they are expensive and hard to find. any help would be great as I'm in the middle of a build and don't want to wait until you post the bottle attachment vid😆😆...thanks again.

Howdy!! This is a great video/great idea. Saw some folks below asked what kind of valve this is and I have the same question. I went to both home depot & lowe's to try & find it, but no luck. I am pretty sure you've removed the mechanism from the fitting & we're looking at the mechanism. Can you give us a hint with regards to the type of valve & where you got it from?

Only thing is I don't think I'd have J-B welded the whole thing together like that. You put quite a bit of time into it, so what happens if the switch fails and it's permanently bonded?
A couple drops of a weaker thread locking compound seems ideal.

Great idea man! 2:55 Maybe drill press and drill b-e-f-o-r-e installing the wire, just to ensure no shorts are created and 7:05 test for continuity before welding the fitting to pipe?

I really like the functionality of the design but I wonder about serviceability of that rotary switch if it ever fails. With the valve body JB welded in place like this it's going to be a pain to get back out.
What fitting was used to attach the bottle? Looks like a conduit compression fitting

That was excellent. I've just started searching for this...what a find. I want to use a residential water meter as part of a project I'm thinking about but want to make it so the meter dial works / spins when the light is on. Any ideas Roman? Great video. Thanks

I made the meter spin by mounting a small Chinese motor to it with a shaft and hiding the motor in the meter housing. I used a three way switch for one light, both lights, or meter. It was all part of a custom steam punk lamp.

Love it, subscribed! Unrelated question but, what fitting did you use to mount your bottle to the T pipe? And is the bottle glued in or do you use an O-ring to hold it in place? Love your build!
Great idea! However, am I right in assuming this switch can only be used in a 12v circuit, not in a 220v circuit like we have in the Netherlands? If so I'll probably need a transformer? Tips are welcome and thanks for answering!
Your drilling into the rotary switch then driving a screw through it, the potential for touching live components is high. I would use a wide nut on the the back thread of the switch, then drill and tap the nut.
How did you wire it to the rest of the electrical cable?

Definitely NOT a gate valve. It has a compression washer and seat. Gate valves have a brass "gate" that lowers to stop access.

Its from a globe valve. A tap valve is similar

Is that a muller straight water gate valve?
Been looking for some sort of compression fitting to go from pipe to bottle, so that the bottle can still be taken of if bulb needs changed. What type of fitting are you using?

I tried to find a valve like the one you're using but cannot seem to find it at Home Depot or Lowes. Can you tell me what type and size valve you used to fit so well in a 3/4" pipe? I hate being so close to finishing my project and running into this wall. Thanks.

Cool project. Definitely on my to-do list. But don't EVER use gloves with a grinder. I've seen a couple guys lose parts of their finger tips when the grinder sucks in the gloves tips. Bare hands only please. And please be sure to use eye protection while drilling. If that bit breaks you could get shrapnel in your eyes. Thanks!

This is exactly what I was looking for. Only question is how the switch is wired to the cord. How did you splice it into the cord with out making multiple connection points? Btw great video.

Absolutely, however I would generally advise against it simply because the big red handle is made so one can apply a lot of torque. It would work great for you, but the first kid/ guest wanting to fiddle with your super cool home made switch would probably spin past the stop point of the tiny little switch inside. There are ways to fix this problem as well, it just makes things more complicated and less elegant.

what size of hole do you drill into the rotary lamp switch. also, why do you grind down the threads on the water valve and how far do you grind the threads.
Just to the bottom of the threads, anymore and the shaft will wobble.

Good idea but there are better switches you could have used. Designed to be extended and has a numbing that would fit into the screw opening thats used to attach the flat washer
