Lovely review, thank you. I shoot L mount, Leica/Sigma fpL, this lens is huge competition to the Leica 24-90 2.8-4 ($8K PLUS NEW) - This covers nearly everything the Leica would and could do, only losing the 4mm on the wide end, but gaining 15mm on the long end, and being 2.8 constant, compared to 2.8-4.
It's an interesting question as to how critical that 24mm vs 28mm wide really is. If you have a 16-35mm or 14-24mm already in the bag, maybe not a big deal. It's just such a bright lens this one.
Thanks again Ewen. Had the Canon EF 24-105 f4 which was a good all-round lens (sorry, but it really was) but strictly for daytime shooting. I assume this could be used for concerts and some indoor sports and maybe even some astro?
@@EwenBell That's what my dad keeps telling me. Don't feel like it, lately, though. I reckon a day wandring in the city might bring back some of that youthful curiosity. Just me, a camera and a couple of lenses.
I wish they would send you the 28-45 for testing, as i value your opinion greatly. I'm fortunate to own the 50mm f1.2 on an SL3 and I'm pondering whether the 28-45 or the 28-105 would be better for portraits and reportage at maternities.
Well, actually they did send me that lens and I just haven't managed to pull a review together! That's on me. It. Is. Gorgeous. Totally unique offering and can't imagine a more different lens to the 28-105mm. I shoot most of my TH-cam videos with it actually. That F1.8 really delivers. The real question is, do you need a 50mm prime of you have the 28-45mm F1.8? I think no. 45mm is close enough and so is F1.8.
@@EwenBell I completely agree, the longer end of the zoom and the 50mm f1.2 prime would be too close. A better compliment would be the 85mm f1.4, or even a 105mm. Decisions decisions! hope you'll find the time to review the zoom though, I'd be the first one to watch it! 🙂
@@EwenBell in the meantime, I got my hands on the Samyang 35-150mm f2-2.8 whilst I'm still in the return period of the Sigma. That's probably a better comparison.
@@nicoxg Spot on! I spent a month travelling in Bhutan with the Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8 last year (E-mount) and it was very very impressive. I loved the 35mm F2, but at the end of the day I'd rather walk around with a very small 35mm F2 prime :)
@@EwenBell I just finished testing the Samyang versus the Sigma during the weekend. I was fortunate to have two good copies, with no decentering nor lens creeping. I won't be keeping the Samyang, for a few reasons. The main reason would be the weight, and the fact that the Sigma focuses significantly closer (and is obviously a bit wider). I prefer the build of the Sigma too (rotation of the zoom ring, zoom lock, aperture ring, etc.). It's little things, but still. If i were a professional photographer, i would probably opt for the Samyang, but as a hobbyist, the Sigma is just right.
Correction on the RRP for this lens, has been released at USD$1499.
Absolutely love this lens! Can't wait
Thank you for that introduction and sharing all those stunning images Ewen
You have the Blue Mountains. I have a city full of pigeons :)

I’m actually impressed with the size for the range and the 2.8 👌
Nice video mate
Thanks Eric!
Beeeeeeeautiful shots! These are the shots I wanted to take but kept leaving my camera at home 🤦🏻♀
Mornings are sooooo hard!

I do see the potential for astro, always nice to have something fast at night. I might get a chance to try that last this year :)
Look at you, doing a release-day review! Love the way it looks wide open into the light.
Just in the right place at the right time. Lucky to live in Melbourne too :)
@@EwenBell I really must take a day to wander the streets with my camera. Haven’t done that since I was a very young man.
You still are Peter!

I wonder are there any major differences between emount o this and sony 24-70 as this feels a bit more versatile
Sigma recently updated their 24-70 F2.8 as well. It's a popular zoom range and always will be.
ANY CHANCE TO HAVE NIKON Z MOUNT?
Nikon are not being friendly with third-party manufacturers. They're in tight with Tamron though, so there are some affordable lenses on offer there.
