This was on TCM tonight. It’s been so long since I’ve seen it. Such a marvelous movie. Anybody else recognize Ellen Corby and Helen Kleeb? They would both later be on The Waltons starting in 1972. 😊😊

Agnel Moorehead deserved the Oscar® nomination for this film. She was superb. Excellent music score by Frank DeVol.

Bette Davis is really superb. The direction by Robert Aldrich is masterful, the shots at the end (from the moving car, camera pulling back etc.) are magnificent - and Frank DeVol's score is brilliant. The orchestration of the end title song, starting subtle, with an accompanying harmonica solo, ending with the female over-the-top chorus accompaniment of Al Martino's lead, always gives me goose bumps.

Thank you for your eloquent comments. HHSC is a truly great film. I can't think of any actress that could have come close to Bette Davis' performance. Having said that, the performances of Olivia de Havilland, Agnes Moorehead, and Joseph Cotton were also excellent. BTW, despite Olivia de Havilland's brilliant performance as Miriam, I think Joan Crawford would also have been great in the part.

@Larry Mitchell I was just looking up these clips since it has been a while since I watched the movie. And wow, Larry, I was just thinking almost exactly this before I read your post. It's one of those twists of fate, that Crawford became so paranoid about working with Bette again and was replaced. I can't imagine in any sense that Joan could have portrayed this any better than Olivia did. Funny story if it is true - I read that Bette and Olivia were traveling around on a publicity tour promoting the film. Although Bette and Olivia were good friends, at some point Bette said, "You are really getting on my nerves." Supposedly Olivia cooly replied, "Well, I guess you would have preferred making these tours with Joan Crawford." LOL

That's why Bette and Olivia were such good friends. Bette could only respect women who gave as good as they got, and with excuses to Crawford, she was not quite strong enough.

Olivia de Havilland, cast in this film (against type) upon the departure of Joan Crawford, played an outstanding role by being able to balance chic and dangerous evil in the most clever way possible. Crawford could have never done this.

THEN what happened? To Charlotte, I mean. Jewel Mayhew's letter exonerated her from the killing of John Mayhew in 1927, but she still had killed her cousin and the doctor by pushing the urn onto them from the second floor.

    • @hebneh

@@ericpeterson6766 On reconsideration, I'm sure it was thought by everyone that the urn just fell off the second floor by itself because the house was so deteriorated, so Charlotte moved to a new home and lived out the rest of her life.
