Great video! Mizoguchi is definitely one of the biggest Ryu clones. It's not just the special moves, Mizoguchi even shares Ryu's axe kick. However, I feel that Ryo Sakazaki from SNK's Art of Fighting/King of Fighters is the bigger Ryu clone as Ryo is only one letter change from Ryu, their special moves are near identical, their basic attacks are similar, and they both strive to perfect their martial art. Ryu Is The Capcom Version Of Mario In a Sense cause Mario Bros. Inspired so many Platformers like Street Fighter did for Fighting Games also while Ryu was the catalyst for Marvel Vs Capcom (besides The Punisher & X-Men Children Of The Atom) Mario was the figurehead of Super Smash Bros. and as of now are In the same Crossover game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate let that blow your mind for a second
The pathetic part is Mario has a lot of personality. While Ryu is just a generic stoic martial artist and a poser. Poser because he actually uses Anzatsuken, or assassin's fist and not Shotokan, without ever killing anyone. Unlike Akuma, the real heir to Anzatsuken, not Gouken.
It’s funny that Ryo could be considered a clone and not at the same because he’s a parody of Ryu and Ken. And then Capcom saw this and responded with making Dan.
The opposite would be the ones that influenced Ryu, I heard that the hadouken is similar to the kamehameha and I think Ryu/Street Fighter has some references to Ring ni Kakero. The first big hit manga in Shonen Jump. The protagonist Ryuji has some attacks involving boomerang (Guile) and one of his team mates in the boxe team has a special upper cut, besides other using a headband in some ocasions.
@@Ultimateninja142 Street Fighter 1 and Fatal Fury were both created by the same guy. It's possible that Ken was actually meant to be Terry but with the attire of Ryu (because they were palette swap.)
Definitely bonus-kun from waku waku 7. I would also throw in Rouwe the secret boss of the galaxy fight. An old man with a gi who likes fighting above all else, literally fights exactly like ryu. He’s bonus-kun’s master. I like to think that’s just a old ryu and fighting kept him immortal he’s lived so long he couldn’t remember his name he just remember it started with a R and gave himself the name rouwe he said was close enough. He’s the true Ryu clone in my opinion.
Me: "I mean, it's gotta go to Ryo from AoF, right? Bro's an iconic Shoto with a rival, his dad is a secret boss named Takuma... Just a lot there." Mizoguchi: "Hold my copyright infringement..."
13:30 Though Mizoguchi is Japanese, has a white headband, he has a rising uppercut but not a dragon uppercut. Mizoguchi doesn't wear a gi like Ryu, but Mizoguchi appears to be a high school delinquent in black slacks. Speaking of Fighters History, Ryoko looks more like a female Ryu, but she has a judo-based moveset, which Ryu doesn't.
Mizoguchi is the pioneer of the delinquent high schooler in fighting games The first time I saw Ryoko I thought she was Ryu's little sister 😂 Maybe she inspired Makoto (Street Fighter) 🤔
14:21 That theme is so good! 🎵 The original Fighter's History has amazing music! It is better than the soundtrack of Street Fighter 2 The music was made by GAMADELIC, an in-house band of DATA EAST back in the day In 2016, they made a cover of Mizoguchi's Theme
Akira was basically a last second Ryu re-skin mod, which they did because one of the characters was doing really poorly in testing and nobody was picking him. The change was made so late that the original design, a Saudi Arabian, was still present in all the promotional material and even the arcade cabinet artwork. They also had a second re-design option for him in which he looked more like Kazuya from Tekken (before Tekken existed), but they went with the Ryu clone design instead. I really wish they'd at least permanently retired the white gi outfit in subsequent games. People still think he's a karate guy instead of a kung fu guy, all because they panicked right before the first game's release and made him look like Ryu. Akira was such an awkward and unrewarding character to play in VF1 if you were expecting Ryu that I think he may have caused some people to never come back after wasting a quarter on him, although the game still went on to be a success.
Nothing against Ray 'Baked Potato!' McDougall but Makoto 'Take a look at that!!' Mizoguchi was always cooler and more unique In Fighter's History, Mizoguchi and Ryoko were presented as rivals and the protagonists instead of Ray.
Both FH and FH Dynamite should’ve been Bad Dudes II & III. Where Blade and Striker are the playable protagonists instead of the generic and unoriginal Ray McDougal.
I imagine Akuma walking into multiple fighting games looking for Ryu. Akuma: Fight me, Ryu! Sol Badguy: Wrong game, pal. I'm Sol. Street Fighter's over there. Besides, I use a sword. Akuma: Too many damn shoto characters! Every time! Sol Badguy: Aren't you a shoto character? Akuma: 🤔 hmmm.... I didn't think about that.
Haohmaru from Samurai Shodown, might be an honorable mention here, save that he fights with a sword, doesn't have a fireball attack or hurricane kick, his projectile is a tornado and he does have an uppercut sword attack.
Honorable mentions for Haohmaru and Ky Kiske? Sure, Ky is only function level but he's got a similar move set abs playstyle. Haoh is Japanese and has very similar moves, biggest difference besides personality is BIG sword hits. Kaede from Last Blade as well. They're not as close as many in this list, but they're still obviously meant to be the Ryu of those games. Ooh, I forgot Zen from Rumble Fish, he's close, even has a headband, but has slightly different moves. I would say Mario from Smash almost counts.
Yeah Jago's a Shoto-type, but him being kind of a ninja makes him standout a lot. Akira, visually would be the biggest Ryu Clone, but mechanically, is so far removed from Ryu, that he doesn't even do Karate at all. Liu Kang is mechanically kind of a Shoto(more like Sagat)he's clearly a Bruce Lee homage, which is it's own archetype in the genre. Ryo's probably the best bet moveset and clothing wise, but he's just unique enough like you mentioned.
Not a Ryu fan at all but I absolutely loved and enjoyed this video. Also I know that this is blasphemous but I kinda enjoyed that theme more than Ryu's.
The fact that a lot of this SF clone 2D 90s fighting games were made or by help from SNK shows how obsessed was SNK with Ryu and SF in the 90s and what a surprise the fundoshi guy from KOF MI turned out to be Mizoguchi
Capcom's Street Fighter and SNK's Fatal Fury were both created by the same guy. He used to work for Capcom but then moved to SNK. In the 2000s he founded Dimps, which in turn was hired by Capcom to develop Street Fighter IV.
5:58 now that's some damn nostalgia. I use to rent this from Blockbuster until I beat the story mode with everyone. Not an amazing game, but I had fun playing it 😎
I saw that Mizoguchi ending coming from a mile away. Anyone who knows fighting games knows about Fighter’s History. And Ryo from Art of Fighting is up there too. If even Capcom is calling him a Ryu clone, then that’s exhibit A right there.
Great video!! I had TUFF E NUFF back in the day! I played it quite a bit, it was kinda jank, but the single player mode was ok and I liked the end of match replay.

Back in the SNES days, I had "Fighters History" and I immediately said to myself, "Damn, Mizoguchi looks like an older Ryu." But "Samchay" the kickboxer was my main guy in that game.
Fighter's History is fun
Jean, Ryoko, Mizoguchi arr my mains
Ray and Karnov my go too , that crazy to find out *Karnov* a Russian dude , tho he looks like the Wrestler Iron Shiek lol
@@meganinten0078No *Liu Yungmie* ? That hot chic and her nylon stocking tho ❤😅
Chelnov in Fighter History 2 Press Down, Down, Up, Up, Right, Left, L, R at the title screen after the opening intro . Is to unlock him. random but maybe helpful to someone 😅
@@joezar33 I like Yungmie but I just prefer her gameplay in FH Mizoguchi Kiki Ippatsu!
She feels more complete in that game
And yes, Yungmie is such a hottie 😊
@@WhatIsMatter101 Tony Stark : Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.
Mario: Plumber, race driver, tennis player, soccer player, basketballer, golfer, doctor, martial artist.
Ryu is a Legend
I think they considered giving Ryo a headband. In Kasumi's AOF 3 ending she gives Ryo her headband to remember her.
You should Terry Bogard inspired characters sometime in the future. There's a few. Sol comes to mind. So does the sheep girl from GranBlue.
Ken was probably inspired by Terry Bogard.
@@davidsentanu7836but ken was in street fighter 1 in 1987 and fatal fury came out in 1991
@@Ultimateninja142 Street Fighter 1 and Fatal Fury were both created by the same guy. It's possible that Ken was actually meant to be Terry but with the attire of Ryu (because they were palette swap.)
love your videos den🖤
I’m honestly just impressed at how great these pixel games look 🎉
Akira and Pai always felt like Sega was very visually inspired by Ryu and Chun li
I’ve always thought Cyclops’ play style was similar to Ryu. He definitely plays like a shoto.
5:30: "Is he the number one clone?"
And I'm pulling a Thanos saying: "I don't even know who you are."
Bro my hat’s off to you for providing information such as this! I’ve never heard or seen some these games before in my life. Just the iconic ones lol.
Thank you for the shoutout to Fighters Destiny! One of my first N64 games!
Me: "I mean, it's gotta go to Ryo from AoF, right? Bro's an iconic Shoto with a rival, his dad is a secret boss named Takuma... Just a lot there."
Mizoguchi: "Hold my copyright infringement..."
Mizoguchi is the pioneer of the delinquent high schooler in fighting games
The first time I saw Ryoko I thought she was Ryu's little sister 😂
Maybe she inspired Makoto (Street Fighter) 🤔
Ryoko was based on Ryoko Tani, world champion and olympian female judoka.
14:21 That theme is so good! 🎵
The original Fighter's History has amazing music!
It is better than the soundtrack of Street Fighter 2
The music was made by GAMADELIC, an in-house band of DATA EAST back in the day
In 2016, they made a cover of Mizoguchi's Theme
To me Jin is the best Ryu clone, cause he changes it up just enough to be different, and better. Imo.
Kazuya looks like Tomba and Ryu mutant baby
Yo you gotta do some killer instinct lore videos. Add Soul Calibur Lore as well.
Nothing against Ray 'Baked Potato!' McDougall but Makoto 'Take a look at that!!' Mizoguchi was always cooler and more unique
In Fighter's History, Mizoguchi and Ryoko were presented as rivals and the protagonists instead of Ray.
Fighters History will make your lists of -knockoffs.
Fight Fever too (except Magic Dunker he is the most original character of that game)
Both FH and FH Dynamite should’ve been Bad Dudes II & III.
Where Blade and Striker are the playable protagonists instead of the generic and unoriginal Ray McDougal.
My favourite game character..simple and effective..no wonder he has been cloned so much!
Akuma himself is a shoto character lol.
Ken Masters, the original Ryu clone from the first SF game (palete swap with same moves). Also, Ryo Sakazaki from Art Of Fighting.
@1:02
YAY!!
Jago!!
He’s the first to come to mind!
Love you guy!
If I remembered correctly, the same guy who created Street Fighter was involved in making Art of Fighting. So there's that.
Akira is basically the Ryu of Virtua Fighter, and to be honest, Akira would get along with Ryu pretty well thanks to Project x Zone 2.
Breakers still looks great today! Really holds up!
Ryo is a clone but not really, they were made by the same person but he left capcom to join snk and basically made the same character.
Actually 🧐 Ryu is a so-called clone of a real martial artist. That's a fact that a lot of SF fans don't realize.
Great video!! I had TUFF E NUFF back in the day! I played it quite a bit, it was kinda jank, but the single player mode was ok and I liked the end of match replay.
6:03 I recognize that music in the background...it is the arranged version of the 'Contemporary Period Stage' from World Heroes Perfect 🎵
Hanzo and Fuuma have the coolest looking 'shoryukens' in the 90s, especially in World Heroes Perfect
King of Fighters 14 is a pitifully underrated fighting game.
I love these types of videos, Den! I'd love to see more of these, and yes, I'd like to see a video like this for other fighting game clone characters 👊🏿
Ryu Hoshi is the Superman of Fighting Games.
Andy Bogard, Kyo Kusanagi... To a lesser extent, Sie Kensou (due to original moveset mostly).
Sho is for sho' my favorite Ryu clone. So broken and so fun to play!
Ryo is more of a half brother to Ken n Ryu. Same father, different mothers. Rumor was he purposely was made to be a combo of both Ryu n Ken as an acknowledgment of the man who created both franchises.
lmao when that knockoff walked down the same forest
Dude please do Chun-li next
Let's face it, 90% of fighting games back in the day copied SF2's character design and move sets!
Tia Langray and Sakura are definitely my fav shotos in the fighting games gooniverse I mean universe😏eheheheh
2/3 of the games listed no ones even played 🤦♂️
Should've mentioned Flying Dragon to see if they had a clone
Ryu is just a Karate guy in a Gi that do a Hadouken, witch was copyed from Goku. The other two specials he have (in his debut) where already seen in other games.
If you're the main character of the game. You're Ryu
nope
Biggest Ryu clone? Terry Bogard
You mean Ryo?
@@KenMasters. Damn. I actually meant Terry, because he and Ryu are basically the same character.
Ryo is more of an upgrade than a clone.
13:02 banger song
You need to be fired... THE TEEEMOOO VERSIONS.. 😂😂😂😂 im fucking crying
Shoutout to the use of rhe Eternal Champions II theme
Not many ppl remember that
I think you missed Reiji Oyama from Power Instinct, really good video tho 💪🏾
Mizoguchi dope tho , i love SF , but Capcom were money hungry d**ks in the 90s suing Data east , Fighter's History isn't even that much of a ripoff .
Bro can you make a video about your thoughts on the new Capcom Fighting Collection 2? They included Capcom vs SNK 2 we know how much you love that game 😎
Haohmaru from Samurai Shodown is like Ryu with a sword
Tiger bazooka gun
Actually jogo look like good men version of akuma and fun fact i was thinking Ryu is Akira 😂 and the music in the video brings a lot of memories man 😢
8:18 definitely from part 1 just with a couple of letters added an a different look
It’s funny how the number 1 looks like the original street fighter from the movies Sonny Chiba.
2:46 Kage Maru : Am i Joke to you?
Ryu is the Goku of fighting games
3:25 now he has a heavey influence of Ryu
Mizoguchi mentioned ......TIGER BAZOOKA 🐅 💥
You forgot Yugo from Kensei: Sacred Fist, that game with Steven Seagal xD
Honorable mention; not a clone, but influence at least, Kenshi's alternate costume from MKDA. Oh and Kobra from MKD/MKA. Everyone says he's a Ken Masters clone, so him too.
Mizoguchi ironically has the personality of Dan than Ryu
