Yes the pre torque is extremely important, if is isn't enough when the head is put in the ground it will over torque the threads, damage them, and you'll probably never get it apart, the drill will only tighten to about 85% of its max so it can get the tight ones apart

How do you torque that starter rod? Is the tightness critical, or just kinda crank it on?
We use the jaws on the drill. We pull the joint back into position lock the jaws and torque it down by rotating the rod.
