I'm actually not real surprised by this, Ubuntu has been pretty good to me on laptops and while there are some things about it that might be a little less optimal than other OS's the overall experience has been pretty great as far as I'm concerned.

What we need to do here is understand what Ubuntu is doing to get this efficiency and try to replicate it using the same tools.
On my Fedora install, I get 12-13W on idle according to powertop. So yeah, Ubuntu's doing some good work here.
Just btw, there is a way for new 20xx series and up Nvidia GPUs to power off if they detect no program is utilizing them. Let me try and find the guide I saw

Mine is an old Asus Ultrabook UX331UN (i5-8250U) running Arch KDE with its dedicated MX150 GPU set to hybrid mode. Powertop reports a discharge rate of 5W on idle. Haven't tried other distros/OSes other than ChromeOS Flex and Win 11, but Arch gets me the most juices out of the this old ultrabook's battery. I doubt Ubuntu can do any better than this.

Ah simple remove hardware that you don't use but even the power brick at idle will have some consumption, so vy jut deactivate via software the device itself would still require electricity you need to train the kernel based on what you need let it runn for a month then you xan decide if a reading is accurate enough because by just looking once over a value it does not mean that is acurate put the power mesdurwment before the main switch that that goes in to the wall and you will see that software deactivate wont do anything will never understand such desires y am kynda everything at max performance

    Chris Titus...Man, Myth, and Legend!
    ...
I've seen some power management issues in various distros; some apparently had very little control built in, or were not well designed to take full advantage. I never measured the wattage, but since my laptop is normally plugged in, I was more concerned about system load tying up the CPUs. Ubuntu is an improved Debian (Debian is so fixated on stability they're perpetually obsolete). If I can get some of the MX tools to work in Kubuntu that might be the ultimate distro for my daily use, since I'm migrating to KDE anyway.

I switched to Ubuntu for my base about a year ago for many reasons. I don't mind having the firefox snap. It hasn't been a problem. I used to be a Debian Sid user, because Debian Stable is more like Debian Stale, especially several months after release. But Debian really doesn't have an in-between. The stable branch is too old and stale, even with all backports installed. The Testing branch is only a small step below Sid. Testing and Sid both get tons of updates, to the point that you get sick of updates. And both are a bit unstable, if not plain broken at times. Ubuntu proves that a system can be fresh and up to date, and still be stable. I go by the point releases. I look forward to upgrading to the latest Ubuntu every six months. I usually manually upgrade to the dev release 3-4 weeks ahead, even before the beta release comes out. I like to follow the development. And even the dev release is quite stable within a week of the beta release. Ubuntu is just a lot of fun for me. I love it.

I moved to Arch years ago when they had working audio for AMD GPU's. Ubuntu had issues back then with HDMI audio & newer AMD cards. It was a lot better in many ways than Ubuntu and I never had anything break on me. But I often see people saying they're done with Arch because of the breaks. I left it because I had hardware failure, and just started with a clean box & I know Ubuntu best. But I still have that drive right where it was when the cooling failed so I just need to fix it and I'll be back to Arch lol.

It could be kernel configuration, scaling governor, extra proprietary firmware, more agressive power management of connected peripherals (USB, network & storage controllers), etc.

Early in 2022 I had a quick look at this issue when deciding whether to put Fedora (pretty power hungry) or Arch on an aging Microsoft Surface Pro (2017) and Arch easily won at the time. That said all my other machines run Void Linux and all I've done to tweak power usage is install tlp; with that, on battery, dwm or even Gnome 42 currently running on my laptop, a Dell Latitude 7420, moves to ~ 2.45 watts at idle (no typing) while watching powertop, and 5.21W right now while typing this note. That's with dozens of Chrome tabs open, vscode, a few terminals... basically usual daily use conditions. I'd put Void on the Surface Pro but I'm too lazy to build Linux for Surface for it. I'm getting superb use time on batter on the Dell BTW. I will buy another.

A few years ago I had a notebook with a 2nd generation i5, I ended up migrating from Linux to Windows precisely because of the battery consumption at the time.
This notebook had only the Intel onboard video card and even so the battery consumption in Ubuntu 12.04 or 14.04 was almost 40% higher than in Windows and its battery was no longer the best, which made it have to abandon Linux for some time while I was on the street, using it only when I was at home, connected to the electricity.
Thankfully, nowadays we have more documentation and information on how to improve this consumption, because in notebooks every extra minute of energy counts.

Hey Titus, is there a way to reach you outside of TH-cam comments? If not thats ok. But I had a very annoying issue with my new windows 11 laptop. Basically the screen occasionally goes black randomly for no reason at all. I can still use the windows menu thing by clicking on the windows button, and the menu pops up, but I when I click on any application the screen goes back to being black. It gets fixed after a restart, and it had happened a bunch of times in the past but it wasnt very frequent. Today however, it happened 3 times. Its borderline unusable. Any idea what could cause this?

Chris's criticisms were (and still are) valid. Ubuntu made some bonehead moves to drive some desktop users away, and do things that undercut their principles and their adherence to the Linux creed of free and open-source software. But the server world is different and business-driven. For a huge user base, support options, and overall stability while being more current than Debian out of the box, Ubuntu is still tough to beat.

i'm partial to FreeBSD myself, don't actually know that much about Linux, but Ubuntu is a decent desktop operating system, it's easy enough, don't know about how it goes under the hood, but I think there's more flavorful flavors of Linux out there...
i just went with FreeBSD because of the license, could make money from it, and the modularity of it, better security, firewall, it also spoke my language more, was easier for me to understand the docs, were fewer "enthusiasts", so was easier for me to get help with it... **shudders**
... not in a good situation right now, not really messing with any of that stuff atm, but i've got a FreeBSD server, Windows 11 gaming laptop, a soldering iron on my desk, and an xbox...

One thing I've noticed since switching to Linux from Windows (other than the terrible battery life during use), is the just as terrible battery life when you put the laptop to sleep. If I was using windows, the laptop would last quite a long time in sleep mode. But in Manjaro, if I put it to sleep, the battery drains within a couple of days (at least within a week).

    1. Ubuntu has a patched kernel 6.1 for my Asus Vivobook laptop keyboard (kernel put on hold) that is easy to install.
    2. Kubuntu had problems with Audacity not detecting an audio to record. (yes I use pavucontrol)
Is it stable? Not completely - I get screen flickering from time to time, X11 fail but it does not crash the OS.
