Rs 1900 for a deluxe room! Food is very reasonable here!
Bye Bye sikkim .. it is time to say good bye to Taj Guras Kutir .. was a brilliant stay and the staff were fabulous to say the least ..
While making our way back to Siliguri , we took a ropeway ride( Gangtok ropeway) and also witnessed the Bakthang waterfalls enroute.
After crossing back into West Bengal via Rangpo , a trail to Teesta river bed enticed me to take our Jimny off roads .. And it was a fantastic experience ..
We had fun with our Jimny as it took us right beside the river bed.
To end the day , we shopped at the famous Hong Kong Market in Siliguri.

Awesome as usual. That river bed bit was the highlight for me. Finally seeing a jimny which is actually exploring. And hotel Savera made me remember my younger days when we used to stay there sometimes when we used to stay at siliguri. And no trip to siliguri is complete without trip to our famous hong kong market. Lots of love for Triple Carry.

I've found that the local drivers and even the traffic police in Sikkim, Darjeeling, Kalimpong etc. areas are non cooperative and sometimes hostile towards self driving vehicles from WB. It is true that they hate to lose taxi business but I felt there is a political angle too (read Gorkhaland movement). I've found some taxi drivers in Sikkim driving under the influence of alcohol. Many of them are ex-servicemen. The taxi drivers have a strong lobby with the Govt. Till sometime back, Sikkim Govt. was not issuing restricted area permits to non-Sikkimese private vehicles for visiting North & East Sikkim and it was stated in Sikkim Tourism website. No explanation was given for such restriction. Now that practice has stopped. Govt's argument was, as I was told by an official in Sikkim House, Kolkata, that drivers from plains do not have the requisite skills for driving safely in hilly areas. If that is so, then there must be a clause in our DLs. Indian DLs allow us to drive anywhere in India unrestricted. In my new DL, "hill driving" clause is there but it is not ticked. I asked RTO Officer at Beltala, Bhabanipur regarding the meaning of this clause and how to get it ticked. He didn't have an answer. This non cooperation to private vehicles from other states is little less in Uttarakhand & Himachal Pradesh and is nonexistent in Ladakh. Nepal is not very friendly too in this regard.
Yes Sir.. In total agreement.. Had a pretty bad experience in Kalimpong while I was actually driving uphill ( who should get priority) and the driver did not want to give me space on a steep curve.. But, I guess I overlook these nowadays.. Sole intention was to bring forth the attitude of these drivers.. So that one is always prepared for the worst..
Good to hear that states in the North are more cooperative.. Hopefully we get to experience that this year( fingers crossed)!!
