    Great video. I was forced into retirement because of my heart. I've always
    Been drawing but never sold any I gave them away. i drove truck for 35years.
    I started painting for the first time at the age of 56. Last year. I have 100 plus
    Works done. And still grinding. I don't like galleries. I have sold my works on
    Side streets near main street in affluent areas of Washington DC.. I have a
    Truck and I park then display 4 to 7 canvasses. I do ok. Cash only is my

Hoping to give up my day job and make art my full time career. A bit scary because cash flow won’t be a sure thing but exciting because I know in my heart I can do it if I believe it! Keep going!!

    I belong to an art gallery on Main Street, NORTHPORT, NY. Last year I sold the most pieces but didn’t make the most money. I have such a stash of paintings that I’m happy to sell at a reasonable price so people can have a piece of my art. I believe that no one is going to pay for something they don’t like, so I’m not bothered by the prices I set… it’s still a thrill to have a sale! I did put a high price on one piece because I loved it and didn’t want it to sell… well, it sold!! Thank you for your advice and wonderful art!

    I liked the video and really appreciate your insights. I think we are pretty fortunate to be getting free advice from a professional who's got the goods to show for it. And I continue to be so amazed with the variety and quality of your paintings. Lots of artists paint the same painting over and over just slightly different. And that's not a criticism at all because hey if it sells more power to them - they are creating something people want and have a niche. But most of yours are very different from one another. That's inspiring to me since I like to try different things and styles within the abstract genre. Anyways I really appreciate your channel and tips and look behind the scenes. 😊👍🙏

    So happy to find your videos. I am a 77 year old female artist and just started painting. After retiring I started sculpting, just after joining a adult education class. Loved it and discovered I had some talent. Now my body cannot do the heavy work anymore and decided to start painting. No idea how to start but just bought some paint and some large canvasses and went for it. I was doing it for me and did not care if others liked or not. Funny though they do like them. I am learning so much from you and wanted to thank you for sharing your talent. From Canada.

    I agree about the galleries. I took my work away from a few galleries when I found my art stashed at the back of the store / gallery. One said it helped give an impression of volume, even though that meant my work was not seen. Another said they didn't like my name therefore were not prepared to display my work

    I agree with you 100% regarding your opinion on galleries, they are a waste of time. I have been professionally painting since 1986, showed with galleries before but became independent for around 7 years already, best decision I ever made, galleries were a waste of time, they do not really help the artist find buyers, plus 50% commission is outrageous! It’s a good feeling being independent, the artist is fully in control. Your are so spot on with your observations, galleries don’t really care about the artist, that’s the brutal truth. Your video is so useful to artists, great job!

    Thank you, I've been at this art business for over 30 years... and its gets worse each time. I'm not giving up because I lOVE !!!! this life.
    The last three years, been recording videos of local art shows in my area of my friends progress. Also recorded information on my art and life to educate the potential investor on who I am, and what surrounds my art.
    Art galleries, online & brick and mortar are just launch points for me. Occasionally I get commissioned to do portraits and other creative projects to stir the challenge of my skill set, or simply I have bills to pay out of my control. Such as life.... I am an artist, till my death do I part.
    Again thank you, for the refreshing rebuttals from common questions of art and life.

    Clever and helpful. That's you. I appreciate it. My husband has been telling me the entire time, this very same thing pertaining galleries. He is in full support of me starting my own space to sell MY art and other little crafts I do on the side. One of the first things I personally learned with local art galleries when I moved to where I am now is that it's all a who knows who. Your art is chosen in competitions only if the owner knows you through his cousins friends dog walker or if you agree 100% with his spiritual path and politics. It's so absolutely ridiculous!! Luckily theres supportive friends and family, your channel and the book "How to survive and prosper as an artist" by Caroll Michels. This author was also not fond of galleries.

    Some good advice here, thanks. I would describe myself as a keen amateur painter/creative with a studio in The Rooftop Arts Centre, Corby. Some of my fellow resident artists are professionals with qualifications to support that. My studies were undertaken at evening classes, and workshops while supporting myself with "thedayjob". Now I'm "retired" I'm actually a full time creative, and I love it that have my own agenda. I make stuff because it's part of the real me, and sometimes I sell my work

    Selling art is something I have had such a hard time wrapping my head around, primarily cos of what you've said, artists just not talking about it, like it's some big secret. I grew up around art, my gran was a painter, my mom dabbled in multiple mediums, I am good on the creating process, but the selling part has just eluded me, I cannot thank you enough for really going in depth. And as I am starting to work towards doing much larger pieces, the videos on stretching and packing are also greatly appreciated.

      Not that I know of Tim? It was really only borne from a need to hang them and a need for a big space to paint in. One thing led to another and it has become and integral part of the experience for clients.
      It also help present my work in context and shows I am genuine and real. All the videos we do, stuff I talk about etc - it's all under this one roof. I'll be celebrating 10 years as a Limited Company next May so we must be doing something right!!

    Wonderful advice! I do work full-time so I can't focus on my art full-time. I did become a Mom and a Wife and I put family first for years. I dabbled in my art off and on, but more for fun. I do love to attend art shows and I have seen the work out there locally and I do feel my work could stand up against what is out there. But I am still insecure(always have been). Now that our son is grown I have decided to throw my stuff out there and see if something sticks.
    I have never been a fan of galleries. I think they are too greedy and there are so many more ways of getting your work out there. I did recently submit some of my work to a local newer gallery that sits in a great location. I would not have considered it, but the owner has a great passion for artists and the local community and helping Children. And he only charges a 30% commission. So I will test the waters there...
    Our city is growing by leaps and bounds(U.S.) and the demographic of buyers is changing. The gallery owner is conservative for now and has his prices very reasonable compared to larger galleries. I think that will change as we have more and more professionals move here and they bring their purchasing power here. At least that is my thinking. It happened in Seattle and it seems to be starting to happen here. I have been around long enough to know that people are hungry for unique and something different.
    As I do my art I put everything of my self into it and it sounds like you do too. As you say be yourself and don't listen to critics. My motto for sure. I do what I want... I do not try to copy someone else. Our 23 year old Son has been trying to tell me as well as my husband that you are a better artist than you think. Our son went with us to an outdoor art event with dozens of artist's booths on display. My Son said... "Mom" "Your stuff is just as good if not better then many of the artist's here so don't be so hard on yourself". He made me feel better... I have had a blog site where I upload my art(for years) and another online site of which I am developing. Since I retire next year I will have more time to work on it. It is an exciting new venture for me. Sans the crazy economy ups and downs...
    So this video was done several years ago... I am hoping it had gotten better for you... And of course now we have AI creators out there to compete with... Great... 😳 At least I have a nice workers pension and Social Security and investments so I will easily be able to fund my interests... My husband has the same so he is set too... 👍Our Son is in college and has a bright future ahead... 😊

      So good to hear, thank you for sharing all that. Listen to your family, you’re a lot better than you think. Creatives have a tendency to berate their own worth. It takes a long time to feel you are worthy. You are though - right now. So take the confidence and run with it! Great to hear from you and thanks for commenting 👍

    You are genuine, candid and inspirational.The first thing i noticed was the consistent arrogance, puffy jacket and cap - signs of a 21st century artist. I'm 49-year old fledgling artist in Southern California; I don't have a choice than trying to make a buck off my creativity. I make masks, and creatures that I've slung on Hollywood Blvd and Venice Beach, got great reactions but not a sale. I have zero support and even less money but it looks like I've found some like minded souls here. Thanks

      @SwarezArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jacket - it's always cold in my studio
      Cap - I am bald as f**k so I need to keep my head warm (see above)
      Arrogance = assured confidence.
      I am older than you Mike - age means nothing.
      Glad you found the channel interesting so far. Thanks for the comments.

    Thanks for the chat! I agree wholeheartedly with everything you mentioned. Especially the bit about critiques- definitely not worth listening to in my opinion : no one can tell you if your creation is worthy or not, it’s yours and yours alone and there is someone out there that will fall head over heals for a piece that may have been flogged by a critic.
    One thing though, in regards to galleries, while I am NOT a fan of showing in a gallery I do donate a piece a year to a local gallery for the annual art auction/ball. It has brought me business from people just seeing my work ( gets my name out there more) and it goes to a good cause. While I have to sacrifice a piece that could have brought me cash in hand, it comes back to me twofold by bringing me new clients.

    • @SwarezArt
      @SwarezArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Lulu - yes that's a great idea about the charity donation - if it's a win all round then you've got a great model to work with. I tried that a few times but it didn't quite have the same effect! A great idea shared - thank you very much for that! Power to you!
