  • This tutorial explains manual borehole drilling with locally made equipment up to 40m. Animations show what is happening in the ground.
    SHIPO drilling is a combination of several techniques and can reach 40m deep.
    The video explains about:
    - stone punching
    - augering
    - percussion jetting
    - (hand) slugging
    - casing pipe design
    - casing installation
    - developing and cleaning the borehole
    All in 15 minutes only. But remember Simple is not Easy, lots of practice and guidance by professionals is needed to become a good manual driller. This can be provided by one of the SMART Centres close to you see www.smartcentregroup.com.
    Free manuals are available at www.jacana.help/resources/water

      @@JacanaHelp I will. Better to review your information to do it better. Some woud be improvements.
      The mortar-cement seal was the only one that could potentially cause problems the way I observed and heard the description. Assuming that bentonite clay may be unavailable or expensive local dried heavy clay chips should go down prior to prevent cement-sand from actually potentially ruining the well. Bentonite from the gravel pack to the soil grade is perfectly acceptable. Various codes in some places require mortar-bentonite seals honestly not better so if it costs more don't do it.
      Most drilling methods need to be modified for each local conditions.
      I have an interest in helping further.

    • @JacanaHelp
      @JacanaHelp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@braithmiller Thanks, Good suggestion. I never heard about sand/cement running down into the gravel pack that far. But it still makes sense. In Zambia WARMA is the groundwater authority overseeing our work.
      Thanks for the input.

    • @braithmiller
      @braithmiller 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JacanaHelp It is a risk I would not take without at least 20+ kilo of bentonite or local heavy clay chips settled on the top of the gravel pack first. You may by process get a natural clay barrier on the gravel pack. Regardless compliance with local rules. They will be interesting to know. They vary here, some not making sense.

    Nice video.... Many thanks.
    Can I flush my borehole by myself.
    I have a petrol pump and a hose long enough to touch the base of my borehole. My borehole is 30m deep. It always get dirty when ever it rains.

    • @JacanaHelp
      @JacanaHelp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you can: Cleaning means loosing the dirt particles in the slots of the casing (for example with Swabbing) and as quickly as possible pump all of that dirt out and don't stop until water is clear. For swabbing you can use a piece of rubber that is almost the size of the casing (internal diameter) and under that rubber you make a stronger piece of plastic, a bit smaller than the rubber. Attach both to a strong enough pipe push it down slowly to the very bottom and pull it up fast to suck the dirt out of the slots. this way you wash the full length of the filter-screen (place where the casing has slots). After that quickly pump out the dirt with a pump that can handle dirty water. Don't allow the dirt to settle in the bottom of your borehole.

    • @JacanaHelp
      @JacanaHelp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another thing to do could be to place the pump at a different spot in the casing. Place it at a spot where there are no slots in the casing.

    • @FHove

      The machine will charge a lot of money, so it's better to do it yourself if you get the tools and time. The community will do the job together without any cost.

      Two options: 1 If you know how to weld, you can learn to make them yourself at www.jacana.help/resources/water . 2 Or you order them from one of the welders we trained for example in Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Kenya or Ethiopia. Let me know what works best for you.

    How many days did it took to drill all this?

    • @JacanaHelp
      @JacanaHelp  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rural Africa does not have money but it has plenty of time. the time needed depends a lot of the soil structure. An affordable electrical survey HEP and VES helps to determine the best location and drilling technology to use. More on that, see: th-cam.com/video/3QHpT1xYuss/w-d-xo.html. There are manuals how to make and use the equipment at www.jacana.help/resources/water Now to answer your question: On average a drilling a borehole to 24m costs about a week.

    can one of these tools actually cut a layer of pure rock?

    • @JacanaHelp
      @JacanaHelp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Teams are cutting through pure rock layers if they are not too thick. Of cause the challenge is that you don't know how thick the layer is. So they often try for half a day or even a day making little progress hoping to shoot through.

    • @JacanaHelp
      @JacanaHelp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What helps a lot is to do Vectical Electrical Sounding measurements to determine the best place to drill. The equipment can be locally made and use, manuals are at www.jacana.help/resources (short video on VES: th-cam.com/video/3QHpT1xYuss/w-d-xo.html). We -for example- are in a place in Zambia that is "limited suitable for manual drilling" other manual drilling techniques fail easily. But when we combine VES measurements with SHIPO-drilling, the drilling success rate is above 90%.

    How many metar deep.

    • @JacanaHelp
      @JacanaHelp  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Today a team reached 52 meter. But it very much depends on the type of soil. This method can break some rocks but not massive rocks. at www.jacana.help/mwater you can find a map of what is drilled with this method in Zambia. There are also teams in Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Kenya and Ethiopia using this method.
