    i liked my mercury so much when i had enough money i ordered a 1967 mercury comet with the 427 engine 4 speed and posi.
    it was a great street car and i raced it at our local track a few times.i needed a scattershield to race it so i sold it and bought a hurst amx. jim

      Jim, I appreciate you taking the time to share those memories! The Comet sounds like you had to pull some strings to make that happen in more ways than one :) Really appreciate your viewership as well - Sam

    Super rare Mercury. There are so many good vintage Ford performance parts on this car I don't even know where to start.
    This was a hot little package in 1962.

    Absolutely beautiful! 405 4 spd! Boggles the mind! Amazing condition for being put up in a barn for 30 years! Ford- made spaceship! Same roofline as the Thunderchicken! Always loved the taillights! With a 405, that's usually all you saw of it! Nice find!

    My father was a big proponent of big block full-sized fords. I have as a young boy ridden in many R Code 427 Fords riding to the lake on weekends. This beautiful Mercury brings back a lot of memories of those days.

    What a car!! Super rare, awesome 406/4-speed and it's in remarkable condition for being unrestored, especially the interior. Almost a shame to fix it up, but it'll look even better all cleaned up and sorted out. I love all the little details on cars from this era; in fact IMO '60-'65 was the peak for American cars, period.

    My grandparents had a car identical to this in the mid eighties when i was a little boy. They daily drove it. The only difference was that theirs had blue interior, and the 292 automatic. I have so many memories of stretching out and going to sleep in that long back seat. We lived way out in the country, and a long way from town. So i napped to and from every trip to the grocery store. Lol. Thanks for posting this trip down memory lane!

    This is a super clean, original example of full size Ford/Mercury muscle. The high performance full size cars from the early to mid 60s we're kind of a precursor to the muscle car era. My personal favorite full size muscle cars were always a 63 1/2 Galaxie R-Code 427, a 62 Pontiac Catalina 421 Super Duty, a 62 Chevy Bel Air 409/409, and a 66 Chevy Biscayne L72 427. Always liked the 64-67 Ford Galaxie 427's too and the 66 Ford 7 Litre with the 428. The Ford 428 was a torque monster with good street manners but the raucous, solid lifter 427 was a high strung race engine that was de-tuned a bit to be street legal. The 428 was definitely better for everyday street use but for all out performance the 427 was one of the best high performance engines ever made. It's right up on the same level as the Mopar 426 Hemi

    1962 mercury monterey 2 door hardtop , was my very first car that i bought with my own money. i loved that car. i paid $75 for it. it was rusty, on four flats, and the muffler was about rusted away. i put dual glasspack mufflers with straight black pipes, got it tuned up, put brakes on it, and hit 6 pine trees in a row at 55 mph on the way to work one morning. but when i had it tuned right , i had blown the doors off of a new 1986-87 Lincoln Mark vii one night.

    Reminds me of a '63 Mercury Meteor with a 260 V8 and 2 speed automatic. Very different just 1 shift, other half of 1 barrel cutting in. Single year front suspension, wheels moved up and down, and rearwards. Dad got it cheap because front end was out of alignment and swerved left badly when let go of wheel. Only one old guy at front end shop ever worked on one. Wish I still had that car.

      My 63 came with a 64 1/2 automatic floor shifter, bucket seats and a console ,from a 63 Comet style.
      And had a few pros tell me this is all factory.
      Same 260, but hooked to a floor shift.
      I haven't seen any others.

    I'm old now but when i was in high school in 1980 we had real muscle cars! My buddy had a 1962 1/2 Galaxy 406 tri power 4 spd convertible. Bench seat with 14 inch wheels with red stripe. He paid $6000 US in 1980 and that was about $ 10 000 Canadian. Huge sums then but it rocked!!

    • @onebigkahuna69
      @onebigkahuna69 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A friend of mine had a mid 60's GTO convertible and it exactly wasn't a small car.Now think of this what if the people at ford had stuffed a 390 into a 65 Mustang or a 396 into a early nova's at the same time of the first GTO's?Or Chrylsler sticking a 413 into an early Valiant.?I'm a ford guy BUT I love and appreciate ALL of the old Muscle of that time.I think that is why people like the AC Cobras big engine in TRULY small cars.My dad had a 65 Galaxie with a 390 PI motor in it and had a Six pack put on it and he said it was fast until he came up against a Hemi Charger.My dad told me a story about us living in Nebraska and we were stationed at Offut AFB.He told me that he got off work on a friday and was headed home and this Charger pulled up and wanted to race.he said he got up to about 130 and started to think about his Family He said the Charger pulled in front of him and the backend squated down and it took off.He backed off and knew he didn't have anything for it.He told me that on that Monday he was at a Beer Joint having a few beers on the way home and people were talking the "Wreck" that happened that weekend.A car and he thinks it was the same one had hit another car with a Family in it and killed everyone.The speedometer on the car it had the been pegged at 160.I don't know how trues this is but for my Dad to say someone else beat him was something for him.lol BTW my first car was a 65 Galaxie with a 390 2BBl carb but it was pretty fast for a 16 yr old.

    406 F.E engines pull like there's no tomorrow , I had one with a 6 pack . this one is nice but it needs to be rebuilt and the tappets and cam need attention . I have always said the early cars had BALLs weather Ford , Mopar , or Chev these cars were the true
    factory muscle on the streets . 406 was Fords answer to the 409, the one weakness was no 4 bolt mains in the 406 , the later 427 was the end result . The 4 speed was a Borgwarner super T 10 which was also a good trans behind a 406. Thanks for posting

    • @ervinthompson6598
      @ervinthompson6598 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In NASCAR racing , they quickly found that you couldn’t weld the main caps on a 406 tight enough to keep from running over the crankshaft at the RPM required to be competitive for a whole race. The 427, however- built for endurance at LeMans - was an entirely different story.

    • @lenkowalyshen9571
      @lenkowalyshen9571 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ervinthompson6598 Yes , that is the big reason Ford went to the 427 , but the 406 3x2 sure did go.......I owned one with a 4spd

      My parents bought one of these from McClures in Anahiem...Had factory AC,power windows and duel master cylinder...My dad had dealer installed throttle body fuel injection...Never caused any trouble...During his ownership of the Mercury, he bought three Lincolns. On the 68 coupe he specified the 462 rather than the 460...He had the dealer install twin quadrapole throttle body fuel injection, a high lift Crane cam and lifters...Ford headers...Eaton torque converter and heavy towing package...Both cars were retained for years...The Mercury handled with great ease and had an engine with power in excess of 450HP...The Lincoln handled like a 66 T-Bird with much more power and road feel...Both cars had power and road feel that most could not believe...

    • @xdrfox

      I have bought smokers that just needed the oil returns in the heads and block cleaned out with a clothes hanger after running mixed with kerosene.. ( The oil will sit up top and get sucked down thru the valve guides ) Lots of the oil years ago had a lot of sulfur in it (QS) and was thick, Oil company's used steam to get it out of the grounds, quick trips that hardly had enough time to run the engine long and would produce thin layers of silt on the walls. Sorta like people with bad diets clog their arteries ! Change the oil filter a few times after the cleaning.

    Okay yeah,... that's at least a quarter of a million dollar car!
    I have another one for you.
    A 63 Meteor with buckets seats and console, ( that looks exactly like the 63 Comet buckets and console) and an automatic floor shift, that is exactly like the ones the 64 1/2 Mustangs came with.
    I have checked seven ways to Sunday, and everyone has said my interior is bone stock.
    No S33 ( or any other numbers on the outside of the car, but a rare 280 fender badge, right behind the front tire, on the lower part of the fender.
    Just like the Galaxy 390 fender badges.
    Yes, I do have the extra b- pillar badge

      @@samspace81 it looks like Mercury was experimenting, in order to bring up sales.
      I would think, that someone switched the interior, except for two things.
      One,...the Meteor interior is shaped a little different, then the Meteor,...and,
      Two,...those unusual 280 fender badges.

    He said the car was a "G" code but the data tag on the driver's door pillar clearly shows 2Z, for 1962, Z was the code for 390 although it does sound like a solid lifter engine and the exhaust manifolds look right for a 406,,,,,,
