You are worth my time to write this. I do care.
Thanks for the laugh, OP. Snark and comedy are my family's most potent coping methods. One of the most important and brutal lessons I've learned in my life is that I need to take time to laugh, for melancholy is such an easy trap for people like me that I sometimes don't notice I've fallen into it again. And a lot of people in the replies need to take a deep breath and think about life. If you cope differently with stress and trauma, that's fine, just lay off those of us who need to laugh while we mourn. I'd hate to be so serious that I wouldn't make dark jokes.
What a beautifully sad song. So thoughtful and visceral if you let it soak in. We need more of this in the world to speak the truths of war and weapons and pain with their tanks and their bombs... wow just wow breaks my heart in all the right ways I must say!

The crazy thing is, Bad Wolves actually were going to have the front woman of the cranberries sing the lyrics on their version, she agreed and everything, but she unfortunately passed away before it could be recorded.

It's a tragedy so few people realise this was a reaction to the slaughter of two children in Warrington, by Republican terrorists. RIP Johnathan Ball and Tim Parry. Your memories will live on.
I love her voice, her accent, and the song itself. But the lyrics, are so much more. make the song itself mean so much more when you listen to the lyrics and not the beat. It makes your brain think. About what the song is about. I found out recently and it made me cry. So many people my age don't care at all about things like that. Nowadays they just care about being popular. They don't realize that more things happen than they think. I'm honestly worried for the sake of the world because the people in the world right now seem to get worse and worse as the years pass. We claim to have advanced greatly but only in technology. But people themselves have mostly lost sight of what's important. It can be good to only remember the good things for one moment. But come to reality. This song just proves that more things happen than people seem to care about.
Nala, can you let us know what its about specifically? I am asking because you raced right by the historical meaning of this music's lyrics. Everyone has googler anyway...
Powerful words, I wonder if you still fill the same a year later after having experience death all around the world with the pandemic. I wonder if you have been mindful about others, the sick the elderly. Or have you been selfish spreading the virus like some careless ppl do for whatever reason …freedom, political, etc.
+Mister TIBBS! we went from throwing rocks to using swords to using black powder explosion to propel a bullet to sonic speeds then too dropping something that weighs 500 pounds and can level an entire city then we created nuclear weapons that could destroy the entire world if they were all used. nice fallout quote though
DieselWoWrecording Service You don't get it. The weapons of war change. The people, the reasons, and the methods all change. But war itself never changes. Warfare as it is today is fundamentally no different from warfare thousands of years ago. Just humans killing humans for ultimately pointless reasons.
This song still breaks my heart. As long as we hide from the truth of the horrors of war, we'll be nothing more than zombies following blindly under the words of those who seen to profit off of suffering. War is a monster unlike any other, and the fact that people still defend the idea of it under the guise of "protection" and "order" is disgusting. I loathe paying taxes only because i know most of them go into perpetuating these battles rather than constructive things, such as programs for the needy and educating our society.
My mom used to listen to this song. With a wonderful voice.. Reminds me if the world will change someday or somehow. I sang this with my friends and cousin that are older than me. My grandpa died and i heared my grandma singing this song. I sang along too.. She is not dead, she went to the shy to see how the start to shine. ❤️❤️
Today I listened to this song as a Russian and it was the first time I ever cried because of a song. This song is 27 years old and still has so much relevance. I feel so much guilt to have the same citizenship as 150 million zombies.
@Shaise Kindering doesn’t really show, many Russians I’ve talked to seem to be for it, or they are silent, and silence is compliance. Even in Europe many Russian immigrants who have access to free press don’t seem to be so angered by this atrocity, I don’t see them going out protesting. I really wish it was only Putin but sadly it’s not
All you zombies on here thinking the Russians are the bad guys.. Wake up ffs, do some research. The Ukrainian nationalists have been killing Ukrainian Russians for the last eight years, and Putin is finally putting a stop to it. How many kids have been killed in the last eight years just for being ethnic Russians. Look up the alley of angels you gobshites, and wake up to the lies you are being fed. Listen to the Duran on youtube, or Eva K Bartlett, and learn.
What makes me overwhelmed with wonder is how even after their death artists have the power to keep influencing people. With honest hours of work a creation is left behind that remains open to different perspectives. This song has been a part of my life since college, yet it continues to inspire me in different stages of life whenever I come back to it.
NJSM1995 I didn't say they were the same, and yes I know that this song was mainly about when Great Britain soilders opened fire on innocent citizens. The lyrics in song just makes me think. The point of good music is to be able to relate to it in any way you wish.

My dad loves this song. He's ex military. He's a quiet man, typical really. I listen to this song and sometimes wonder if it reminds him of any of the things he's experienced as a solider. War is all the same, just pure tragedy. I can begin to get into his head when I listen to this song. When I watched the music video, one of the children uncannily looked so similar to my little brother. Idk, maybe really shows you how tragic it can be.
This song was made because of a bomming Irish bombed Warrington and children died it was a tragedy and even tho she was Irish she made this song because she was against it and if you read the lyrics carefully you will realise the sad meaning
The IRA made mistakes in their targets , without the IRA In the north would we still be 2nd class citizens ? We were born into a state that didn't want us and discriminated against us In every way. The IRA were our protection against loyalist and state murder gangs , a eye for a eye will make us all blind so let's make a better world nai
The war was about the rivalry between protestants n catholics so basically that's what her song's about. The unjust of killing innocent men, women n children just cos of a differeance in belief
MyOscar1001 Oh yeah, I get that. I'm just saying that it seems like a whole lot of people like this song, but if you asked them to name a great song, or ask them to tell you the name of the song if you gave them a few lyrics, they might not be able to do it. People will always remember the song, just at random times.
So I now know this to be about the Bishopgate bombings, but listening to the lyrics I completely thought it was about PTSD caused by war. It's really easy to interpret it as someone watching another person who's living their life as a 'zombie' haunted by their memories of war.
I agree! War is hell for all. Families are destroyed, countries. Those fighting have seen such horror and PTSD may very well play a part. One friend of mine does not turn his back yet today to someone of Asian decent because of his Viet Nam experience. It's so sad how war can put such damage to our mental status. All caused by evil greed for power over others!

nxxght The Ceasefire went horribly wrong. One of the deadliest explosions the IRA done had taken place after Ceasefire was announced
Well, this is some history I knew nothing about until now. The song makes a bit more sense now.
FeiraDragon Yeah, it was mainly wrote about the warrigton bomb and Irish Independence, but also about the stupidity of both sides not giving up.
But aren't they still fighting for independence? I've heard that some more bombings have happend by the ira

This was my dad's favorite song. me and all my siblings know all the lyrics by heart. when he was in his death bed I made sure to play this for him one more time. Sometimes on the anniversary of his death this comes on. I take it as a sign that he's up there, listening to this while riding four-wheelers and hanging out with Grandma, or as we called her, Ma.

As an Irish person you are 100% right. Thanks for the support from Italy. It’s nice to know we’ve support from other countries.
The IRA (Irish Republican Army) is a militant group that was determined to remove British troops from Northern Ireland. Lead singer Dolores O'Riordan claimed that "Zombie" speaks about "the Irish fight for independence that seems to last forever." The lyrics even say, "It's the same old theme since 1916."
OOF same comment But i had more info i only said its anti-war
Irish Moth it was written as a response to the IRA bombing people calling paramilitary groups Zombies it’s not about which side was right or wrong it was about tragic events taken place due to senseless acts of violence
It's still based on both sides! Fair play too bad wolves for covering it also

Nice
I think she wrote it about Bloody Sunday when the British shot and killed 14 unarmed Irish but ok. Also Rip Dolores
FoughtStatue No, I looked it up on Wikipedia because I wanted to know what was the meaning behind the song ! Sunday Bloody Sunday was a U-2 song from back in 1982 maybe that's what you're talking about my friend, I'm sure U-2's Sunday Bloody Sunday had something to do with what you said ? Anyway you have a great night !
FoughtStatue Are you Irish ? My Grandfather was from Ireland, but I know how much the Irish people don't like it when an American says he's Irish through his ansestors ! But when someone asks me what are you I say Irish lol, because when asked that question they really mean where did you're ansestors came from, my Grandmother was from Scottland, so all my ansestors came from somewhere in the UK.... Peace my brother...
Ken Bray Yeah I think you’re right. I just usually think songs about the Irish and uprisings and things like that are about that Sunday. Also I am not Irish but my ancestors are Irish. Also have some English and German(apparently I’m related to some English kings so that is cool)

Warfare as it is today is fundamentally no different from warfare thousands of years ago. Just humans killing humans for ultimately pointless reasons.
+Mister TIBBS! War has changed*

I really wish it was only Putin but sadly it’s not
Well you are wrong. And those other 150 millions zombies and others around the world are proud of what Russia is doing.

Thank you Gracieboo, after reading your comment I had another look at the lyrics and it makes sense now.

I'm just saying that it seems like a whole lot of people like this song, but if you asked them to name a great song, or ask them to tell you the name of the song if you gave them a few lyrics, they might not be able to do it. People will always remember the song, just at random times.
yup rembered it by chance it was on radio one time in 2006 but couldn't remember what it was called.

It could just as well be about Northern Ireland during The Troubles, even if they didn't use tanks and planes in that war.
It was written by the lead singer, Dolores O'Riordan, about the young victims of a bombing in Warrington, England, during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
