As a model railroaded since the 1960s I just want to tell you that you are doing very good work You rank with other standard bearers in this great hobby
Good video guy thank you. I have two of these ordered from the new catalog in MRL Livery. Can't wait for their arrival. Seeing your unit has me excited to receive delivery of mine!
If I’m not mistaking, the horn is based off an original Union Pacific Nathan Airchime P5A. I can tell based on one the sound of it, and two, the configuration of the horn. Awesome locomotive!
Eric, all that smoke coming out of the exhaust stack reminded me of a SD45 with A bad turbocharger.Really nice, I like it. Like the way Lionel now keeps the front end from turning with the trucks, It's A nice touch, much more realistic.
@@ALL-bj7mj21 was originally numbered 3621 when shopped out in the 1968. But 10 years later, it will be remembered to simply number 21 in 1978 to make way for UP’s 1978-79 batch of SD40-2’s. The 21 was decommissioned in July 1985 and sold for scrap.
You're probably aware that an SD45-2, one of a dozen bough by Erie-lackawanna in 1972, has been repainted in its original EL colors and remains in service today along with a few of its sister units that are in the Norfolk Southern scheme. It's number 1700 and can be found on U Tube and the internet if you would like to see pictures. It was nice of NS to do that. The 46 year old locomotive has survived through EL, Conrail and now NS in its EL colors.
The top 4 railroads that had the most orders of the SD45 is the Southern Pacific (317 units), the Pennsylvania Railroad (130 units), the Santa Fe (125 units), and Norfolk & Western (115 units).
Wow Eric that's amazing on how you got that big locomotive Union Pacific railroad SD45 gently coupled up to some freight cars and man I sure would like to see Matthew do the same with union pacific railroad SD-45 #48 when he has a job working on the union pacific railroad SD-45 #48 too
Lol, it's the same exact horn from the Southern Pacific SD40T-2 GATX Tank Train set you reviewed a few years back! That horn is definitely a whole lot better than that awful generic screeching horn that we all know Lionel was putting out in almost all of their Legacy Railsounds equipped diesels. The detail on this unit is really good BTW.
It is funny, while you were blowing the horn. There was a train coming through town, and it sounded dead on to me. Due mostly to the fact, that they were in time, as well as the sound came across as dead on in my perspective! Furthermore I believe they still use this style engine in my area of the country!
Yep. The two lights on the front and rear of freight locomotives are called class lights, and they were fitted with colored lenses to denote the class or type of train for the purposes of timetable & train order authority: Class lights off = regular timetable scheduled train; Green class lights = timetable scheduled train with a section following; White = 'Extra' train not listed in the timetable; Red = rear of train marker (rarely used) trn.trains.com/railroads/abcs-of-railroading/2006/05/locomotive-classification-lights
I think Lionel uses the same engine sound file for all of their EMD engines. This sounds just like my NS Go Rail SD60E that would have a 710G3 in real life.
The engine overall looks well detailed, sounds great, and runs great! One thing I noticed Lionel likes to do with turbo-charged EMD locomotives, is use the same primemover sound file of an EMD 16-710-G3A, which were used in the real and Legacy SD60s. It would be nice if they created a new sound file to sound like an EMD 645 like what the SD45s really had.
Eric....first time viewer. Hey,Im in food marketing. This is the best locomotive/ train review Ive ever seen. Matter of fact, dont know where you live but you oughta contact MTH in Baltimore on doing this for them if Lionel is still comatose. Honestly, from a marketing perspective, toy train manufacturers are the worst marketers. None of them do enough to reach the young. The best Lionel ever did was have Johnny Cash do a TV commercial with him singing and a freight train running. But that didnt last long. The young dont read catalogues, tha ts old tyme thinking, they want noise and action.
Hey, Eric. Do you think you’d be interested in a RailKing MTH Grand Trunk Western GP-9 Diesel Engine? I have one of my own, but I’m not sure where and if you’d be able to find one for yourself. I think it would be an awesome edition to your set. It’s a 3-Rail O-Scale in case you’re wondering. I have two. One is powered which is 4543 and the other is non-powered which is 4540.
In the nightmare I was working on some tracks my foot got stuck between a switch, and then I hear this horn I and see this beast rocketing to reward me.
Mine looks like the Premier version. The model I have naturally has a tank on the top whereas the Premier doesn’t. So for some reason I have the regular but it has the Premiers body.
Denniss7420 hennings-trains.shoplightspeed.com/jw-a-10500-your-last-battery-railsounds-batt-repla.html here your capacitor. Need to do a little work to get it in though.
These are one of my favorite type of diesel locomotives 😊

Eric, I love the history lessons you include prior to your model reviews.
Great review! Your layout is awesome. These reviews never get old.

Nice engine, love the UP paint scheme.
This looks fantastic on your layout
That *is* a great horn - geez! Also, love the engine sounds, nice turbocharger spool sound.
The SD45 is one of my favorite diesel locomotives, great review Eric
Always love the product reviews....
Love the layout updates and how to’s more though!!!
Appreciate all your videos!!!!
Nice detail there, very awesome!
These and the SD70s have my favorite truck frames
That horn did wind purity good! Nice video

Connecticut Rail Films hi hi

Your camera aspects are superb!
I do believe that horns on engines are road specific as well, but that is a nice horn on a beaut of an engine. Great review as always
I love the ol EX Southern pacific units! Good vid!
??? These are as delivered to Union Pacific.
Most were from former Southern Pacific
yes this would be the series UP bought in 1966.

Whenever I tune into one of Eric's videos he gets an automatic thumbs up even before I watch it! :-)
Great looking engine Eric!
Very nice review, one of your best thank you.
Nice I wish I could do o scale but it is not in the budget right now
Go for HO. Its cheap and its a very convenient size
Awesome desiel hope to see more of it.

The AVR has 5 SD40M-2’s which are rebuilt SD45’s, all are in daily freight service
Allegheny Valley Railroad They are actually straight SD40-2’s in SD45 bodies.
Wurlitzer 153 I didn’t know that, thanks

I thought the marker lights on the EMD SD45 was called class lights
I might be mistaken

SD45 is a good looking engine. Nice review Eric.
You should make another video like episode 14 on your Eric’s trains video blog and test the pulling power of some new models
Great as always Eric!

Pretty cool diesel
Now, I find this funny, I just made a Union Pacific SD45 in a game I play and that I'd the exact number I have on it.
Pretty cool engine I must say.
Nice review Eric!!!
Well done Eric!!!
Beautiful engine and awesome review Eric! Thanks bud!
I fully understand your love of the horn
The irm has a wisconsen cetrel sd45

Why does the light in the cab of all of the Lionel train turn off. I like the Union Pacific sd45
WOW. You have over 30k subs. Congrats Eric
If not, then could you do a review on the Amtrak HHP-8 please
In the nightmare I was working on some tracks my foot got stuck between a switch, and then I hear this horn I and see this beast rocketing to reward me.
Have you ever reviewed a o scale 0-4-0 Lionel lines steam switcher the one I have is from the 40's could you do a review on one of those
NORFOLK & WESTERN SD45 High Hoods are favorite
Eric, i think that horn is supposed to be a new cast Nathan P3.
Hey Eric can you do a review on the Amtrak ACS-64 o scale or no. I don’t know if there is one
nice job thank you for showing how to remove cover.
i wonder what track did you use for your layout?
i LOVE that horn!!!
Very good lokomotiv.
Nice video Eric!
Please review LIONEL LEGACY CONRAIL ES44AC 8098 (NS HERITAGE)

Love This
How did you make your asphalt?
Michael Johnson BNSF railway station in caper WY real quick I think you just need your opinion you from your opinion
don't you mean the sd45 was the predecessor to the sd40 (witch is still in service)
For fun you should run all of you up engines from a certain era with a big frieght
Are you going to review the wm shay 6
yes
One of the next reviews/ videos
No Wisconsin Central SD45’s? Shame, the WC had an awesome paint scheme
WC units are listed in the 2018 catalog
Benjamin Hackl sweet! Shame I Model HO and not O
I love SD 45s
What's the 9 volt battery used for on the models with compartments for them?
Prankster Batman I had thought Eric said it was used for Incase the train went over a dead spot? Or maybe it was someone else.
Prankster Batman to keep the sounds on briefly if the engines hits a dead spot or when changing directions in conventional mode.
For $600+ they need to have a capacitor....not a battery!
Denniss7420 hennings-trains.shoplightspeed.com/jw-a-10500-your-last-battery-railsounds-batt-repla.html here your capacitor. Need to do a little work to get it in though.
Dose Lionel sell the rotary beacon?
They still catalog it from time to time.
So what will replace the SD45 as a medium loco ...... SD54 ?
SD45-2 replaced the SD45
Denniss7420 ok was wondering XD
Funny ending lol!
The real UP 21 had UP lettered on the nose instead of the shield but all in all excellent model
TheTexanFanMan I am a fan of that style, not as common or well known from what I’ve seen
Jonathan Erickson Agreed, I like the 70’s UP look.
Wurlitzer 153 i can’t tell (could easily be the evolution of cameras) but the paint on the older UPs looked different.
Does know what horn type it is
I think it’s a Leslie but I can’t think wich one
That horn is so scary it actually gave me a nightmare.
hey please do the lionel hiawatha
I love emds best!
I'm new here and I like train
Nice
Same Bell as the U30C diesel
The horn sounds like a lisle air horn and for give me if I spelt it wrong
Cool
We run these on the BNSF.
I have a Kato SD45
I’m not 100% sure if it’s compatible with you’re controller.
Love most of the content , but every time I want to listen to train engine sounds , all I get is HORN !!!!!!!!
Whether it
“21”
Eighth like
prime-mover sounds are wrong
Þhàñk for postiñģ
Get an american freedom train number 1
