21 years in the Marine Corps and I never saw an actual failure; broken firing pin, firing pin retaining pin, etc. I have seen plenty of malfunctions/stoppages but never a broken part that stopped the rifle from firing. Course I’m not talking about bent front sight posts, bent barrels, broken stock, etc. Clean your weapon. It’s a simple but necessary habit.

Cleaning your weapons is the price you pay to keep them reliable.
But it’s not just the cleaning. It’s the breaking down the weapon and visually inspecting its key components as you do the cleaning.
If there’s a problem you can bet you’ll see it, and fix it, and thereby avoid that failure you were headed for.

I clean my guns atleast every 2 or 3 range trips. I go to the range 3 or 4 times a month. I dont have all the money in the world so taking care of what i have is very very important

I clean my firearms like Marion Cobretti - right in the pizza box while munching a cold slice.

A few things: 1) fixed many broken guns, many dropped or fell on which broke stocks, bent barrels, bent op rods, 2) many with lost or missing parts, 3) if using corrosive ammo or black powder must clean 2 days in a row or they will rust, 4) people using bad or junk ammo
The most interesting fact illustrating the gun community is ALL gunsmithing/dealers seem to use as much or more cleaning supplies on customer guns as they sell to customers.

That is a very astute statement and I highly agree. Cleaning and maintenance. Cleaning can help a person recognize problems before they cause a life threatening issue.

Keep your weapons cleaned and lubed is your best option to prevent smooth operation and use a good selection of ammo.

CLP bud and never use water
I use Ballistol.
Lucas has a good gun grease.
Mil-Comm makes a good grease.
The Ballistol I put on the steel before and after it rains. But recently had rust in my buffer tube. So that was a mistake. I should have cleaned that after the last rain.
I ran Ballistol down to -20F on AKs. I ran grease on the ARs. To simplify my logistics I switched to Ballistol on the AR internals this summer and will see how things perform.

I clean my carry gun after every range session and my AR 16” rifle every other session ( depending how frequent I’m shooting that month). Some good cleaning wipes will due justice in between sessions. 😅

Budget is okay, later go back and get a decent bolt with a decent coatings. I also like a good upgraded ejector and spring from a reputable company. Clean and lube is essential. Most of my rifles like to be run wet. Preferences vary. Cleaning and inspection is important. =) Stay Stoked.

A few weeks ago my AR trigger failed not sure what the exact problem was but i replaced it with a drop in trigger. Years ago had my extractor fail on my M1A it was a catastrophic fail. Send it back and it was replaced for free. Last bird season the gas seals on my 1187 broke, that took it out of action for the season. Probably the biggest failure ive seen on a wide range of guns is extractors and ejectors. Cant remember how many ive replaced, but its in the double digits. PS the trigger that broke was on a PSA pistol. So if anyone buys one i suggest upgrading the trigger as soon as possible!!

My M4 was a contractor/ FOB guards rifle and it was full of Iraqi sand.
It took two deep cleans to actually clean it properly.
I replaced all the high wear parts and I would absolutely pack it in a SHTF situation.
Its beat on the outside but perfect on the inside where it matters.
Enough of star chambers, make Don’t Ask Don’t Tell great again.

I used to have malfunctions in basic training and my early years. Then instead of the light coat of oil, I started lubing the crap out of the bolt and chamber and charging handle. Malfunctions stopped. It also made it easier to clean as the powder stayed wet.
Never been in the military but I can break down,clean and maintain every weapon I own. I’m 52 been doing this since I was 8.
Absolutely agree… a clean and well maintained weapon is mostly very reliable. Good mags, ammo they run. I also disassemble and clean my mags, check them over well on a regular basis. IMO it is the weakest link. Keep shining.
When I got to Germany after basic and ait we were issued M16's and taught once how to break them down and clean them, that was the only time in two and a half years that I ever broke my rifle down or cleaned it, didn't matter if we were out in the field playing games or guard duty and didn't fire it or went out to the range and did fire it, it was turned back in dirty and the armor cleaned it, fathom that. And when I served in the guard for three years in the mid-seventies, same thing. However, if we were in a combat situation, I am sure things would have changed. I once had an armor tell that by God if he had been my armor I would have cleaned my own rifle, I had to tell him, not unless armors had authority over the CO, he didn't seem to like that for some odd reason.

I have had only 1 AR go down, due to a part failure. I had an ejector spring wear out on me. Did I clean the weapon like I do my service weapon, nope. More than likely I should have. After doing some math after the fact and talking with the armorer at my unit. Theoretically it should have failed long ago. I had a round count on the bolt of around 50K. Plus that had some full auto simulation firing done to it as well. The only other catastrophic failure I’ve seen was an actual bolt brake in half. After inspection. We determined it had an air pocket in the metal, where the cam pin sat.
No Way! FLINT has always been my favorite book. I've lost count of how many times I've read it. L'Amour rocks.
Well... I'm not sure if excessive cleaning is necessary but definitely something to stay on top of.
I've seen misfires, jams, parts break, hang fires, cook-offs. I had a M&P 1.0 9mm follower crack apart 😯 . Fun! I had 1911a1s stove pipe; 230gr FMJs. I had a 96D .40 have a tiny sliver of brass get stuck in the extractor which caused problems.
Basic weapon maintenance/ cleaning will solve most of the problems guys have with their firearms. Yes, even Glocks require cleaning despite what the "experts" on Reddit say

I grew up with the Sackett books by Louis L'Amour, and I'm from where they were from and don't live far from there now. And Teddy Roosevelt was pretty badass.
Had a forward assist break on a colt rifle while shooting a NRA high power rifle match.

I'm not concerned with leaving behind a myth or legend, just a will to fight for what you believe and a method to make you effective. I can only pass that down as far as I am able, then somebody else has to carry that burden
Throwing on an 80s - 90s action movie and cleaning weapons is one of my favorite things to do.
Don't leave oil in chamber during cleaning you can Hydra lock the casings in the chamber or cause it to not eject as it should
I currently have about 15k on my current training carbine. Nothing but lube every range session. I probably wiped the bolt off once. I put about 5000 through my steel frame pistols before a cleaning. Glocks? Can’t even remember the last time I cleaned one. Lube only. We have a mutual friend you work for who. Will prob confirm this for you and confirm my training pace.

MR. Murphy!! I am religious about maintaining my weapons. To this point I entered a benchrest shoot with 22 and 30 calibers. The 22 rifle I have likes to be HOT and DIRTY, were talking 40 plus rounds, to start getting the best groups. After sighting and adjusting the scope, I could not let it set overnight without cleaning, so 40 more rounds! OCD? The other rifle when I started to compete, the trigger pull went from very light and smooth to very heavy. When I cleaned the 30 later I found a small square piece of metal apx. 1/16 inch which fell out of the trigger area. It had to have been there from the factory years ago. Thank you Mr. murphy for showing me that. At least it did not happen while hunting. Even the best maintained weapon can be effected. I like to think I have done everything possible on my part to prevent this, yet it happened. 90% of gunsmithing is just CLEANING. Keep up the great and thoughtful videos.
I grew up in an all military family and all of them were combat vets I didn't have a choice but to learn these things and I'm glad I did. I was taught to maintain my weapon at all times so every time I shoot I clean but it seems all these GunTubers like T- 🦖 arms and many other tell you don't . I don't get where these freaking people get their info from you should treat it better than your girlfriend because one day it will save your life. Thank you for setting the record straight 👍.
@STOKERMATIC I have a question for you. What do you do in a SHTF situation when two patrols from two different groups run into each other in the woods? Not enemies but not friends....unknowing of each other. Nerves and tensions would be high with a lot of people on edge. Does one person go out to talk/de-escalate while others cover? Should others aim their rifles at the other patrol? I would love to hear your advice.
Never understood the I never clean my weapon crowd. It’s not hard, takes but a few minutes and is 1000% worth it. It’s also the time to identify any problem pieces like junk O rings, extractor springs, claw wear on extra to etc etc etc.
4 years worth of experience in Iraq and dozens of firefights with and without a suppressor and no malfunctions(other then out of ammo). Now does the Army over do it? Yea most definitely but it instills an excellent habit.
i mean its literally as easy as just doing it when done shooting. only takes like 15 minutes for a more thorough inspection.

When my son and I are done with our rifles we clean them. I see as cheap insurance and a way to bond and talk with my son. His mother passed four years ago and I have to fill both roles. He is 17 now he is choosing a path and trying to do his own thing now. It may not be long before I dont get to see him everyday.

my prepper approach: always clean your guns after use, always inspect pressure bearing/wear components at leas once every few months after a range day, always have wear parts (like gas rings on AR) and critical components (like an extractor, ejector and corresponding springs, as well as an extra firing pin) if you can afford it, have a complete spare bolt that you've checked for head space.
if you have at least one decent quality rifle that you've put at least 500 rounds through and can rely on, and you treat it this way, keep spare parts on hand (even with the rifle, in various grip storage compartments), keep it cleaned and inspected to know potential failures aren't creeping up, keep it sighted in, with spare batteries for optics and lights ready -- then, when one day the lights go out and don't come back on, or there are two people claiming to be President and the country fractures violently, or the house of cards of speculative economics and dollar printing falls apart into the Weimar Republic's worst nightmare, then you'll at lest have a rifle that's been preparing for that day together with you, one you can just pick up and trust your life to and know it'll be fine years from that moment, because you've prepared parts and developed a regiment that assures it will keep on ticking.

de-gresse your carry guns with alcohol. Put a coat of car wax on all of the external, non-friction parts. Where there IS friction,moving parts, put on a very small amount of Lok-Ease dry grahite. this is done to keep dirt, lint, sand from adhearing to the gun parts and causing friction. Add a bit of lok-ease now and then, IF you're firing the gun. The heat burn s off the graphite eventualy. oil and normal cleaning are for the practice guns, which see a lot of rds fired thru them You just can't have all of that MISSING and noise going-on as a civilian in shtf conditions

As a marine vet I thought it was normal to do a light cleaning before the range got to the range then do a deep clean before i put it away ... my rifle is always clean and i couldnt see not cleaning it after even shooting just 1 round

Beware the broken hammer spring. Strangely... your weapon might STILL function intermittently yet misfire with frequency; say, every third or fourth cartridge.
It happened to me during qualification. Like many good "SPORTS".. I still managed to make Sharpshooter... AND... with a few extra rounds to spare.
What are the fucking odds of that?
this whole thing is actually very simple......if you are waiting for the SHTF scenario to really happen, and you are "Prepping" for that, you WILL either clean and LUBRICATE your AR, or you will die when it quits running. ... LEARN HOW and DO IT ! ...and folks, it's not Rocket Science, it's actually quite simple.......go, Learn, and Do it............OnWard........
The AR15/M16 platform shits where it eats, after what happened at Wanat it's been the Galil for me.
Per budget brands vs higher tier brands. Absolutely wrong in my experience. I used to keep count of guns I saw go down in class, practice or on the range in general. I had a log of over 50 budget guns that went down and they either couldn’t finish the day, or had to borrow a gun or get out tools or parts to fix the gun. Stuck cases from out of spec barrels and when they got hot from a class needed to be rodded out. Broken bolts, bolt parts failures, gas system problems. It was all on budget guns not higher end guns. Given that these 500$ guns only have 5000-7500 rounds assuming no premature parts failures, you’ll have the barrel clapped out from regular shooting. If people aren’t seeing this, they just don’t shoot or aren’t on the range training enough to see it.
I’m not against cleaning guns, but when you shoot weekly, it’s generally entirely over done. Quality weapons can handle it. This is non controversial in performance circles. These are the guys actually running equipment hard.

I regret joining the NAVY instead of the MARINES!! My great grandfather was in WW1, my grandpa was in the Korean war unfortunately like you said i know little to nothing about them other than what i envision from the photos of them. Future generations will have nothing to look back on because everything is basically digital now and inevitably it will all be lost.
That was a heavier hit, Top. May have to watch a second time. I believe a lot of men are living without conviction. Convenience + adherence to modern ‘culture’ has filed off the conviction of spirit of the men of yesteryear. Plus all the shjt in our air, water, and food.

This sounds HARSH to the WEAK & Tenders...But IMO ....those who are TO LAZY to clean their Guns ((as far as ME)) EVERYTIME you get done shooting at the Range....Shou have FAILURES every other pull of the Trigger!!!!! PLAIN AND SIMPLE!!!!!
I think you need to clean your weapon wether it's a cheap AR 15 or a high end one all gun's should be cleaned especially after using them. Keep them clean and lightly oiled.🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🙏🙏🙏🙏🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖
