  • Picked this large table radio at a junk store. The speaker had come loose inside the cabinet. This was another set that didn't like the use of an external antenna, without going through a resistor. The radio had all sorts of issues. All of which are now resolved except for it needing the correct knobs.

    Cool, I could have sworn that the hum was from a bad cap somewhere, it was amazing to see it disappear when the antenna was connected! You do know your stuff! Thanks for the entertainment we need this to keep the boredom from overtaking us during the lock down.

    I just picked up a 142x at an antique shop for $30. It has some issues, when I first got it it was essentially "deaf" on both AM and FM...a little tweaking of the antenna trim (for AM) brought it to life..but it was, as yours was in this video, still deaf on the mid to low end of the band..some tweaking of the IF and Oscillator slugs fixed it to the point it has fairly even response across the band now. It needs a good cleaning, replacement of all the wax caps, a dial cord restringing and a proper tuning when I get a signal generator. Some of the tube sockets are dirty as you showed in your video on mine as well. See the video on my channel, I have a few more on the radio that I will be uploading soon.

    I just picked up a model 141, it powers up, just no sound from the tuner. My initial reason was to turn it into a Bluetooth speaker for our vintage camper, but now I want to make it work proper as well.. I basically took a Bluetooth speaker that I had and wired it to the speaker direct and it sounds good. It’s just going to have to be a future project! Thanks for your video!

    HI,I am a new subscriber..You are rekindling my Interest on restoring Antique radios again,..You have a good style,work slow and explain whats wrong,and how to fix it..I wish I could find radios in the Thrift store,But they dont here were I live in canada.I have to go to the antique market,And they want too much for radios anymore..Like 100.00 and up..I cant afford that! But I do still have a bunch I hoarded,so I can work on those.

    Cool. Spartan is one of those names you don't hear that often, but that one seems substantial; they certainly spent enough money on transformers. I've always used a dab of maple syrup on recalcitrant dial cords and turntable belts; usually slips for a day or two but grips once it has dried out.

    TO FIX THAT HUM ON AM: The AGC Voltage should be connected to the First RF amp (or first detector/osc) Control Grid through the loop antenna. Without the AGC connected, you will pick up stray AC hum in the air. (Without the Loop Antenna connected, the impedance at the RF Grid is too High and will pick up 60 cps in the air)

      mine also had just 1 knob left on it ! strange. It sounds very nide mainly due to speaker and the large cabinet. IF transformers are also of great quality.

    Nice Sparton.. I usually replace electrolytics before I plug it in. That hum modulation sounds like bad electrolytics !!

    • @45AMT
      @45AMT  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You must have not watched the whole video. No hum in the finished product.

      I wrote the comment just before the hum cleared up, My mistake on that !! But I made a habit on replacing the electrolytics before power up in old electronics anything that is 30 years or older ! So that's just a habit I have.

    I think this unit from 60x... Scale go to 108mhz, most radio from 50x only go to 100mhz(not extended to 108mhz) if I am not mistaken..

    I've heard that early FM receivers didn't have anywhere near the gain that more modern ones have.

    • @scififan68
      @scififan68 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      True and if you want a good FM receiver from the 1940's postwar Zeniths are probably some of the best and are fairly easy to find. Not quite up to par with modern receivers but I do pick up weak FM stations with only the power cord through a ceramic cap as the antenna in a basement of a brick house. Many modern receivers can't even do that.
