4 Ways to Thread a Twin Needle on Your Sewing Machine

  • Here you will see how to thread and use a universal double (twin) needle on your sewing machine (I use Janome Sewist 525S). A double needle is a way to get perfectly even, neat, double row of stitching or decorate your sewing project with beautiful decorative stitches. You can use a double needle if your sewing machine can sew a zigzag stitch.
    And if you lost an extra spool pin or it didn't come in the sewing machine kit, it's not a problem. In this video, there are at least three other ways to hold the second spool.

    I'm just learning to sew knits on my sewing machine. I've been trying to learn as much as I can before I start a project. None of the tutorials I've watched were so specific about the use of a twin needle. Also this video was so concise and watchable. Guessing you are from Australia. A lot of great needlework tutorials from down under. Will be looking at more of your work. Thank you.

    Really informative. And the part of figuring out the max width of the twin needles was very clever!

    • @kalemosstavros
      @kalemosstavros 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think most household sewing machines are capable of up to 4mm twin needle. I wanted a 5 or 6mm one because some clothes come with stiches that far apart, but I'll probably have to stich twice with a single needle in order to replicate that.

    • @KoalaSewing
      @KoalaSewing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're quite right, for some clothes I also lack a 6 or even 8 mm double needle. I wasn't paying enough attention to this setting when I chose a sewing machine model for the purchase. And sometimes I have to run two parallel stitches with a single needle because the max zigzag width of my machine is only 5 mm.

      @KoalaSewing  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot, nice to hear that. Sorry for the late reply. Yes, for decorative stretch stitches, I used the max stitch width (for my sewing machine, it's 5 mm) and a twin needle with a width of 2 mm.

    There was a video where the narrower twin needle was used to sew dimensional decorative stitches on a lightweight tshirt type of material. When it was stitching, say, a scalloped stitch the material was pulled up between the needles and was raised between the stitches. Other stitches were used and it was a pretty effect. But, the people said they would show it but haven't. Do you know of this or how to correctly set it up with the proper tension etc.?

    great video! does a twin needle help with stronger/better seams or it doesn't make any difference compared to the other methods? (without a serger)

    • @KoalaSewing
      @KoalaSewing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you 🌼. I wouldn't say that the twin needle makes stronger seams. In woven fabrics, the twin needle makes purely decorative stitches. In stretch fabrics, it makes a neat hem that will not break when stretched.

    • @KoalaSewing
      @KoalaSewing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a hemstitch. It joins two pieces of fabric to create an open work appearance. Here, the stitch length is set to stretch stitch mode and looks like that. That is, it's a decorative stitch that joins two pieces of fabric together with a space between them.

    It isn’t necessary to unscrew the needle holder that loose doing so the screw could fall into machine causing a lot of unnecessary problems instead a single turn is all that’s needed be careful and happy sewing

    • @KoalaSewing

      Thank you for your comment! I overdid it a bit with the unscrewing ;) Indeed, a single turn of the screw is all that is needed to replace the needle.

    • @TheJudeJane
      @TheJudeJane 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sapphire Vidal Yes, you must get sequins by the yard at your sewing supplier then use the Ribbon & Sequins Presser Foot. If you have a high shank machine, make sure you get a low shank adapter and purchase a presser foot specifically for low shank snap-on presser foot or check out Sewing Machine Parts Online tutorial here on TH-cam for this presser foot to see how it works, and if they have one to fit precisely YOUR brand of machine. (No, I am not affiliated with the TH-cam channel, but I have the presser foot for over 10 years! Great foot!). Hope this helps!

    • @KoalaSewing
      @KoalaSewing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are several reasons why stitches may skip. The most common cause of skipped stitches is using the wrong type of needle. A knit fabric requires a twin stretch (ballpoint) needle, not a universal (sharp). Please check your needle type.
