  • This wild camp began with an 8.5 mile walk from Llyn Y Fan Fach car park, round to Llyn Y Fan Fawr, and then a wild camp above Llyn Y Fan Fach, near Picws Du. Mountain Forecast showed max wind speeds of 35mph, but I recorded 105.5mph on the Saturday morning when leaving our camp. I recorded wind speeds at our camp location of over 60mph. The Terra Nova faired very well, and the Vango made it through the night without too many injuries, though I'm not sure how much more abuse it could have taken!

    Crikey, did somebody leave a window open 🌪🌬😆. A big fan of that model vango tent. I had a similar one, just a different model name. It was last reasonably priced tent I bought before I started spending silly money on backpacking tents. I still use it now and again though. Great vid, a new subb here👍

      Haha quite a few windows open, I reckon! 🤣 The expensive kit is really impressive, but the kit in the lower price brackets definitely still has its place, I fully agree. Thanks for subscribing, and welcome! 😊

    Great video. Lovely location, one of the better walks in the Beacons. Your tent looks rock solid in the wind.

      I just found your comment in the "Held for review" bin, Kev. Sorry about that - not sure what triggered that action from TH-cam! That tent really doesn't seem to be phased by wind. It's nice and pointed and slippery, even if it's not necessarily as strong as my Soulo (in terms of fabric and pole strength).

    Hey, great video! I’m thinking of going there for a camp in December. Do you think it’s safer not to pitch on the summit? I have a southern cross 2 which I’ve just bought but I’m not sure I want to test it on its first outing with 80mph winds! How reliable do you find the weather forecasting to be in respect of wind? Thanks!

    • @joinmeoutdoors
      @joinmeoutdoors  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Alexi! Good question. The wind speeds I recorded in this video were three times the speeds showing on the Mountain Forecast. This area is notorious for high winds, so do be careful and pitch well if you choose to camp on the top! Forecasts are a guide, but they are not always right 🙏🏻 James.

    Great video...thanks., but I think the Vango Scafell 200 (just bought one for £100 delivered) did very well, considering it's very exposed position & at a fifth of the price of the Terra Nova...& with more space in the B/room. Great value I think...

    • @joinmeoutdoors
      @joinmeoutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I think we found (and slightly exceeded) the limit of the Scafell on this camp. You're right - it was very exposed, and as you saw, the tent was initially taking the wind from side on, which definitely isn't a tunnel tent's strong point. It was much happier once aligned with the wind, so I'm sure your tent will be a great companion if pitched correctly 👌 It certainly has a lot of room inside! ATB James.

    Your anemometer can measure 170 km/h wind? I have a semiprofesional Lutron but is accurate only up to 120 km/h. ...anyway impressive video.

    • @joinmeoutdoors
      @joinmeoutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sure yours is more accurate than mine! There was no way of standing up in the wind when my anemometer was showing over 90 mph, so the conditions kind of reflected the numbers I was seeing on the screen. It was nearly blowing my arm off when I was measuring those speeds 😂 Thanks for watching!

    Could you not have just tightened the tunnel tent's guylines on the windward side to bring the side back up? Having said that, the Hilleberg red label katium tunnel was tested to destruction , a pole breaking from side winds at about 85mph, about 105mph pitched into the wind, double poling would most likely increase the windspeed it could endure by 50%

    • @joinmeoutdoors
      @joinmeoutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think the tent would have survived if we hadn't rotated it in all honesty, but who can say? The wind ripped one of the heavy duty straps off the front of it, and the pole was completely overwhelmed on the windward side, as you could see. It is a notoriously exposed spot just there, and a tunnel tent pitched sideways into wind is never going to have a good time of it! What an experience to feel that wind in the morning though 🤩

    • @joinmeoutdoors
      @joinmeoutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting info about the Katium. So pitching end-on to the wind increased its resistance to wind speed by around 25%. I think you'd start getting into the relationship between pole strength, material strength and stitching strength in that scenario, and I'm not sure those relationships would be the same when comparing the Vango to the Hilleberg. There's only one way to find out! Let me know how you get on 😅😉

    Really enjoyed that. Scenery is great. Liked the shot of you walking up and you capture your shadows. Those winds were unreal as you were walking down. And your mates poor tent… good job you re-pitched 😂

    • @joinmeoutdoors
      @joinmeoutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Ash. Too many picturesque views and moments to capture on this trip! The Vango was much happier once we spun it round. The wind did change direction again but at least it made it through the night 😁 Unbelievable power in that wind!!

      Thanks! The SC1 is impressing me more and more in time. I love how the SC2 is just a scaled-up version of the SC1. I've also heard rumours that upgraded 10.25 mm poles can be bought for them, but haven't looked into that too much. Could be handy if you're wanting to camp in really exposed locations though! Thank you for watching 👍
